Missing scheduled EDD phone interview due to new job - can't reschedule despite calling daily
I'm in a really stressful situation and could use some advice. I finally found a new job after 3 months of unemployment (yay!) but now I'm scheduled to work during my upcoming EDD eligibility interview. I've tried using the online rescheduling system but it keeps giving me an error message saying 'unable to process your request at this time.' I've been calling EDD every single day for over a week - sometimes 15+ times a day - and can't get through to a real person. My interview is in 3 days and I HAVE to work that shift or risk losing my new job. What happens if I miss the interview call? Is there any way to call them back? Will they automatically disqualify my claim for the weeks I was legitimately unemployed? Should I just prepare for an appeal? Any advice would be really appreciated!

First, congrats on the new job! About your interview - if you miss it, EDD typically makes a determination based on the information they already have. That could go either way depending on your specific claim details. They generally don't offer a callback option for missed interviews. Keep trying to call, but focus on calling right when they open at 8am or in the final hour (between 7-8pm). Those times often have shorter wait times. If you miss the interview and get disqualified, you'll need to appeal within 30 days of the notice date. The appeal process is pretty straightforward - you'll explain the situation exactly as you did here.

•Thank you! I'll definitely try calling during those specific time windows. Do you know if there's any way to leave a message or email explaining my situation before the interview date? I'm worried they'll just automatically disqualify me without knowing I was actually working.

•That sounds terrible! Did you end up winning your appeal? I'm starting to get really worried about this whole situation.

Have you tried sending a message through your UI Online account? Log in, go to Contact EDD, and explain your situation. Sometimes they actually read those messages. I would document EVERYTHING - screenshots of the rescheduling errors, dates/times you called, etc. That'll help if you need to appeal.

•That's a great idea! I just sent a detailed message through UI Online explaining why I can't make the interview and requesting a reschedule. I'm also keeping a log of all my call attempts with timestamps. Thanks for the advice!

Listen, there's a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to EDD when I was in a similar situation last month. Instead of calling hundreds of times, they get you in the call queue and then call you when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked for me when I needed to reschedule my eligibility interview.

•Is this a scam? I've never heard of any service that can get through EDD's phone system when it's jammed. How does that even work? Sounds too good to be true honestly.

Not a scam - they basically use technology to keep dialing EDD using the right combinations and timing until they get through, then they connect you. It's just saving you from having to do the repetitive calling yourself. Saved me hours of frustration. But your choice obviously!

Hey just want to add something important - if u miss ur phone interview, they usually mail u a form to fill out explaining y u missed it. DON'T ignore this form!!! Fill it out right away and say u were at ur new job & couldn't answer. Sometimes they accept that reason & reschedule without denying ur benefits. Happened 2 me last year.

•Oh really? That's great to know! I didn't realize they'd send a form. I'll definitely complete it immediately if I end up missing the call. Thank you!

One more thing - I'd recommend writing a brief letter explaining your situation (that you got a job and were scheduled to work during the interview time, and that you attempted to reschedule multiple times). Date it, sign it, and keep a copy. If you have to appeal, having documentation dated BEFORE the interview shows you were proactive. It carries more weight than explaining after the fact.

•This!!! I wish I did this b4 my appeal hearing. The judge was like "why didnt u try to contact EDD before the interview" and I had no proof of my calls. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!!!

•That's not standard EDD procedure. Your friend got lucky with a flexible interviewer. Most of the time they mark it as a no-show with no callback option. Don't count on this happening.

UPDATE: I tried that Claimyr service and actually got through to EDD this morning! The rep was able to reschedule my interview for next Tuesday evening after my work shift. She said normally they don't offer rescheduling this close to the interview date, but since I'd been trying to contact them repeatedly and had just started a new job, she made an exception. Just wanted to update everyone and say thanks for all the advice!

•Great news! Glad you got it resolved before the interview date. Make sure you're prepared for the new interview time - have your employment records, final paystub from previous employer, and details about your job search activities ready to discuss. And congrats again on the new job!
