Need to reschedule EDD phone interview but system won't let me - will missing it affect my hostile workplace claim?

I'm in a really tough spot and need advice ASAP! I filed for unemployment after leaving my retail position due to what I believe was a hostile work environment (manager screaming at staff, making threats about hours, etc). EDD scheduled a phone eligibility interview, but I JUST got hired at a warehouse that has a strict no-phone policy during shifts. I've been trying to reschedule my EDD interview through UI Online for the past 3 days, but the system keeps giving me an error saying "Unable to process your request at this time." I also got a notice yesterday that I might have a $4,700 overpayment from a previous claim last year. Two major concerns: 1. What happens if I miss this phone interview because I'm at work? Will they automatically disqualify my claim? 2. Should I address the overpayment issue and hostile workplace situation in the same written response? I really need this new job but also can't afford to lose potential benefits if this position doesn't work out. Any advice would be SO appreciated!

You need to call EDD directly to reschedule the interview - the online system doesn't allow rescheduling once an interview is set. Missing the interview will likely result in automatic disqualification since they'll make a determination based solely on employer information. As for the overpayment, that's a separate issue and requires its own appeal/response. Don't mix the two issues in one letter. For the hostile workplace claim, make sure you document specific incidents with dates and witnesses if possible.

Thanks for the advice! I've been trying to call for 2 days but keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it hangs up. Is there any specific time that's better to call? I'm really worried about missing this interview.

57 calls?! Omg I don't have time for that with starting this new job. Did you just keep hitting redial or is there a trick to getting through?

Missing the interview will almost certainly result in disqualification. When you quit a job, the burden of proof is on you to show you had good cause to leave. Without your testimony in the interview, they'll likely only have the employer's side. Can you step out during lunch break for the call? Or ask your new employer for a 30-minute accommodation for an important call? Many employers understand unemployment matters need to be resolved. For the hostile workplace claim, you'll need to prove: 1. Specific incidents that made the environment hostile 2. That you attempted to resolve the issues with management/HR first 3. That the conditions would affect any reasonable person in your position Handle the overpayment separately - don't combine issues in correspondence.

The interview is scheduled right in the middle of my shift (11:30am), and we don't get breaks until 1pm. I'm still in my probation period at the new job so I'm nervous about asking for special accommodations. I did report the hostile behavior to district management before quitting, but they never took any action. Should I include copies of those emails with my written response?

I had the SAME EXACT PROBLEM last month!!! The online system is completely broken for rescheduling. I tried calling the regular number for days and couldn't get through. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes who rescheduled my interview. Totally worth it since missing that interview would have cost me thousands in benefits. Check out their demo video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

You're dealing with two completely different issues here. The phone interview is most likely about your job separation (hostile work environment claim), while the overpayment notice is about a past claim issue. For the interview: Call the EDD appointment scheduling line at 1-800-300-5616 as early as possible (8:00am). Be persistent! Missing your interview will almost certainly result in disqualification, and then you'd have to go through the appeal process which takes months. For the overpayment: If you believe it's incorrect, gather all your income reporting documentation from that period. If you agree you were overpaid, you can request a waiver if the overpayment wasn't your fault (EDD error). Don't mix these issues in your response - they're handled by different departments within EDD.

Thank you! I didn't realize they were completely separate departments. Should I still respond to the overpayment notice by the deadline even if I haven't had my interview yet about the hostile workplace situation?

im in construction and had same problem with interview during work hours. write down EVERYTHING about why your workplace was hostile. specific dates, who said what, witnesses. my interview only took 15 min but they asked for lots of specific details. if u cant do interview send a detailed letter before the date explaining everything

This is good advice about documentation, but sending a letter won't replace the interview. The EDD interviewer needs to ask specific questions based on your case and record your responses. A letter might be considered, but they nearly always disqualify claims when claimants miss the eligibility interview without rescheduling properly.

Update: I was able to use Claimyr this morning and got through to EDD in about 15 minutes! The rep was actually really helpful and rescheduled my interview for next week when I'm off work. She also said I should absolutely respond to the overpayment notice separately by the deadline. For the hostile workplace documentation, I'm gathering all my emails to management and texts from coworkers who witnessed the incidents. Thanks everyone for your help - I was really panicking about this!
