EDD call dropped after hours on hold - How to actually start unemployment claim?
I finally got through to unemployment after waiting for hours, but when someone picked up I couldn't hear anything. The call stayed connected for like an hour before it hung up. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm trying to start my unemployment claim and this is so frustrating. Any advice on what to do next?

Ugh, that sucks! I've had similar issues. Sometimes the phone lines are just overwhelmed and calls drop or get messed up. Have you tried calling at different times of day? Early morning tends to work better for me.

•Early morning gang rise up! 🌅 But for real, it's the best time to catch them before the lines get jammed.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

•Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•20 bucks to skip the hold time? Sign me up! 💸 The unemployment office owes me way more than that in backpay anyway lol

Pro tip: make sure you have all your documents ready before you call. Last W-2, employment history, etc. It'll make the process go smoother once you actually get through to someone.

have you tried the online portal? sometimes its easier to start your claim there instead of calling. just a thought

•I tried, but kept getting error messages. That's why I resorted to calling 😩

•Classic EDD, their website is about as reliable as a chocolate teapot 🍫☕

Honestly, the whole system is a joke. I've been trying to get my claim sorted for weeks. It's like they don't want us to get the benefits we're entitled to. Anyone else feel like they're just running us in circles?

•Preach! 🙌 It's a full-time job just trying to get unemployment. The irony is not lost on me.

•It's by design. Make it hard enough and people will give up. Stay strong and keep pushing!

Here's what worked for me: 1. Call exactly at 8:01 AM when they open. 2. If you get a busy signal, hang up and immediately redial. 3. Keep doing this until you get through to the hold music. 4. Once on hold, DO NOT HANG UP no matter how long it takes. 5. Have all your info ready (SSN, last employer details, dates worked, reason for unemployment). 6. Be polite to the rep when you finally get one - they're dealing with a lot too. It took me about 3 days of trying this method before I got through, but it worked. Good luck!

•This is the way. 💯 Can confirm this method works, it's how I finally got my claim started last month.

I feel your pain, OP. Took me 2 months to get my claim sorted. Hang in there, it's a test of patience but you'll get through eventually. We're all in the same boat 🚣♀️

I had the exact same thing happen to me last week! Got through after 3+ hours of waiting, heard someone pick up but then just silence. So maddening. I ended up trying the early morning strategy that others mentioned - called right at 8 AM sharp and got through on my second attempt. Also, make sure your phone volume is all the way up and you're not on speaker when they answer. Sometimes the connection is just really quiet at first. Don't give up, you'll get there! 💪

•Oh wow, that's such a good point about the volume and speaker phone! I bet that's exactly what happened to me - the connection was probably just really quiet and I gave up too quickly. I was so frustrated after waiting so long that I didn't think to check those basics. Definitely going to try the 8 AM strategy tomorrow with volume maxed out. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Another thing that might help - if you do get through but can't hear anything, try staying on the line for at least 2-3 minutes before hanging up. Sometimes there's a delay or they're transferring you to another department. I've had calls where it was completely silent for like 90 seconds and then suddenly someone came on the line. Also, if you have a landline available, try using that instead of a cell phone - the connection tends to be more stable. The system is definitely overwhelmed right now but don't lose hope!

•That's really helpful advice about waiting longer and using a landline! I definitely hung up too quickly when I couldn't hear anything. I actually do have access to a landline at my parents' place, so I might try calling from there tomorrow morning. It makes sense that landlines would be more stable for these long calls. Thanks for the tip about waiting 2-3 minutes - I probably gave up after like 30 seconds because I was so frustrated. Really appreciate everyone sharing their strategies here!
