EDD Overpayment Notice: What to Do? Help!

Hey everyone, I just got a notice about an overpayment issue with my unemployment benefits. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do next? I'm kinda freaking out here.

I found a way to solve unemployment overpayment issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7_HD-L6l_A

Ugh, I've been there. It's such a headache. First thing you should do is carefully review the notice. Make sure all the information is correct. Sometimes they make mistakes, and you can appeal if there's an error.

Yeah but what if everything looks right? I'm in the same boat and I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything wrong 😭

If everything looks right, you might still be able to request a waiver or set up a payment plan. Don't panic, there are options!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone about this! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous, we shouldn't have to pay for customer service šŸ™„

I get it, but for me it was worth it. Spent hours trying to get through before. This saved me so much time and stress.

How long did you have to wait? I'm considering trying this.

It took about 45 minutes, but I didn't have to do anything. The service called me when an agent was on the line.

Here's what you need to know about overpayment issues: • Don't ignore it! That'll only make things worse. • Gather all your documents related to your claim. • If you disagree with the overpayment, file an appeal ASAP. There's usually a deadline. • You can request a waiver if repayment would cause financial hardship. • Payment plans are often available if you can't pay it all at once. • Keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them. • Try to get help from a legal aid organization if you're really stuck. Hang in there, OP. It's a pain, but you'll get through this!

It's usually because of a change in your eligibility or a reporting error. But yeah, it sucks when it happens.

Quick question - how much are they saying you owe? I'm curious if it's similar to what they hit me with.

Pro tip: start setting aside some money now if you can. Even if you appeal, it's good to be prepared. I learned that the hard way šŸ˜…

Has anyone successfully appealed an overpayment? What was your experience like? Asking for a friend šŸ‘€

I did! It took forever, but I won my appeal. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row and don't miss any deadlines!

I tried and failed šŸ˜ž But I think I messed up some paperwork. Definitely get help if you're not sure about the process.

lol welcome to the club nobody wants to be in šŸŽ‰šŸ™ƒ but for real, don't stress too much. there's usually a way to work it out

I went through this exact same thing last year and it was terrifying at first, but it worked out okay! The most important thing is to act quickly - don't let it sit. I'd recommend calling the EDD appeals office directly if you can get through (good luck with that 😬). Also, if you're low income, look into legal aid services in your area - many offer free help with unemployment appeals. The process is confusing but there are people who can walk you through it step by step. You got this! šŸ’Ŗ

Thank you so much for the encouragement! It really helps to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I'm definitely going to look into legal aid services - I had no idea that was even an option. Did you end up having to pay anything back in the end, or were you able to get it resolved completely?

I just went through this exact situation a few months ago! First, don't panic - I know it's scary but there are definitely options. Here's what helped me: 1) Read through the notice super carefully and make sure you understand exactly what they're claiming and why. 2) If you think there's an error, file an appeal immediately - there's usually a 30-day deadline. 3) If the overpayment is correct but you can't afford to pay it back, definitely look into requesting a waiver for financial hardship. I was able to get mine waived because paying it back would have put me in serious financial trouble. 4) Keep detailed records of everything - every phone call, every document you send. The whole process took about 3 months for me but it was worth fighting it. Also, if you're struggling to get through on the phone, try calling right when they open at 8am. Sending you good vibes - this community has been so helpful for navigating all this EDD chaos! šŸ™
