EDD PFL switched from debit card to direct deposit - how long until money arrives?

Just switched my baby bonding benefits from EDD debit card to direct deposit last week and I'm getting worried. Anyone know how long it actually takes for the money to show up in your bank account after making this change? My latest certification was processed 4 days ago but still nothing in my account. I need to pay rent soon and I'm stressing out! Is there a way to check the status of this change on UI Online? Thanks!

Ugh, seriously?? 8 days is crazy long when you're counting on that money. Did you have to keep calling them or did it just randomly show up?

The official timeline is supposed to be 24-48 hours after your payment is issued, but in reality it often takes 5-7 business days for the first direct deposit to process. This happens because they need to verify your banking information the first time. After that, future payments should arrive within 1-2 days of being issued. You can check if your payment was issued by logging into UI Online and looking at your Payment Activity. If it shows as "Paid" but the money isn't in your account, it's still processing. If it still shows as "Pending" then the payment hasn't been issued yet.

Thank you! This is really helpful. I checked and it says "Paid" with a payment issue date of 3 days ago. I guess I'll just need to be patient a bit longer. This is so stressful with a newborn and bills piling up!

When I did my baby bonding PFL last year the same thing happened to me!! I ended up calling EDD to check on the status and they said it can take up to 10 business days for the first direct deposit. They also told me there was a "system issue" affecting direct deposits that week. OF COURSE there was! 🙄 I swear EDD always has some kind of "system issue

Same experience but with my maternity disability before switching to PFL. Their "systems" are from like 1985 🤣

I've helped many clients with this exact issue. Here's what's happening: When you switch from the EDD debit card to direct deposit, your bank info goes through a verification process at both EDD and the State Controller's Office. This adds 3-5 business days (not calendar days) to the standard processing time. If your payment was issued within the last 4 days, I'd recommend waiting until at least 7 business days have passed before panicking. If you need to check on the status sooner, I suggest using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an EDD agent quickly. They have a service that gets you through to EDD without the usual hours of waiting. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The agent can tell you exactly where your payment is in the process and if there are any holds or verification issues with your bank account.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! If I don't see the money by Monday, I'll definitely check out that service. The thought of spending hours on hold with a crying baby is not appealing at all.

I switched mine from debit card to direct deposit during my maternity leave but my situation was actually the opposite of yours. I had a SUPER FAST deposit - I did the switch on a Tuesday and the money was in my account Thursday! Maybe it depends on your bank?? I use Wells Fargo if that helps.

I HATE how inconsistent EDD is with everything!!! I waited TWO WEEKS after switching to direct deposit and ended up having to call them 5 times before someone finally fixed whatever mysterious problem was happening. They kept saying it was "processing" but turns out they had my account number entered wrong even though I triple-checked it when I submitted!! The whole system is designed to be frustrating and prevent people from getting their money. Make sure to document EVERYTHING in case you need to prove when you made the change.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! I'll double check my account number in the system. Did you have to call to discover the error, or was there someplace in UI Online where you could see it?

Had to call. The online system just showed "paid" but the money was floating in limbo. They don't actually show you your full account number anywhere online for "security" which means you can't verify if they entered it correctly! 🤬

Just an update from what I'm seeing in recent cases - EDD has been having some direct deposit delays specifically for PFL claims since they updated their system last month. The baby bonding claims seem to be taking longer than disability claims right now. If your payment doesn't arrive by day 7, definitely call them directly - sometimes there's a simple verification step that's needed.

Good news! My deposit just hit my account this morning - took exactly 6 business days from when the payment status changed to "Paid". Thanks everyone for your help and sharing your experiences!

That's great news @f59779e06f95! Thanks for updating us - it's really helpful to know the actual timeline. 6 business days seems to be pretty typical for the first direct deposit switch. Congrats on your new baby and glad the financial stress is lifted! 🎉

So glad everything worked out @f59779e06f95! This whole thread is going to be super helpful for other new parents going through the same stress. EDD really needs to be more transparent about these timelines - saying "24-48 hours" when it's actually 5-7 business days just causes unnecessary panic when you're already dealing with a newborn and tight finances.

This is such valuable info for new parents! I'm currently 8 months pregnant and planning to take PFL after my maternity leave, so I'm bookmarking this thread. It's really frustrating that EDD doesn't give accurate timelines upfront - causes so much unnecessary stress when you're already juggling a newborn and bills. @f59779e06f95 congrats on your baby and glad the money finally came through!

I went through this exact same situation 3 months ago! Switched from debit card to direct deposit for my bonding leave and it took 7 business days for the first payment to hit my account. I was freaking out just like you are now. The key thing I learned is that "business days" doesn't include weekends, so if you made the switch on a Friday, that whole weekend doesn't count toward the timeline. Also, I found that calling EDD around 8:02 AM right when they open gives you the best chance of getting through quickly. Hang in there - it's so stressful with a new baby but the money will come!

This is really reassuring to hear! I'm in a similar situation right now - just switched to direct deposit for my PFL bonding leave and it's only been 3 business days but I'm already getting anxious. Good tip about the business days not including weekends - I hadn't thought about that! Did you have to provide any additional verification when you called, or were they able to confirm everything was processing normally just with your basic info?

When I called EDD they just needed my SSN and claim number to pull up my account. They were able to see immediately that my direct deposit info was verified and the payment was in the queue - really put my mind at ease! The agent told me that if there were any issues with bank verification, it would show a specific code on their end. Since you're only at 3 business days, you're probably right on track for a normal timeline. The waiting is definitely the hardest part when you're counting on that money!
