How to get EDD letter confirming end of unemployment benefits?

Hey everyone, I just stopped receiving unemployment benefits and I need to get a letter stating that I'm no longer collecting. Does anyone know how to get this? Do they automatically send it or do I need to request it from somewhere?

Yeah, you can definitely get that letter! You'll need to contact the EDD (Employment Development Department) and request it specifically. They don't usually send it automatically, at least in my experience.

Do you know if theres a specific form or smth we need to fill out for this? Or just call and ask?

0 coins

I think you can just call and ask, but tbh their website might have a form too. Couldn't hurt to check both!

ugh calling EDD is the WORST 😫 good luck getting through lol

I actually found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? thats highway robbery 🤡

I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

How long did it take for them to call you back?

0 coins

It took about 45 minutes, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. Just got a call when an agent was ready.

Here's what you need to do step by step: 1. Log into your EDD account online 2. Go to 'Contact EDD' in your dashboard 3. Select 'Ask EDD' 4. Choose 'Unemployment Insurance Benefits' as the category 5. Select 'Claim Information' as the sub-category 6. Choose 'Request Proof of Benefits' as the topic 7. Fill out the form with your details and specify you need a letter stating you're no longer receiving benefits If you can't do it online, you'll need to call. Be prepared to wait on hold for a while. Make sure you have your claim ID and other personal info ready when you call. Hope this helps!

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed instructions! This is super helpful 💯

MVP right here 🏆 Saving this for later!

I went thru this last month. Took forever to get the letter 🙄 Make sure you follow up if you dont get it within 2 weeks

anyone else feel like the whole system is designed to be as frustrating as possible? 🤔

0 coins

Preach! 🙌 I swear they make it complicated on purpose

0 coins

Nah, it's just underfunded and understaffed. Can't expect miracles from a system running on fumes

Pro tip: if you need this letter for a specific reason (like proving income for a rental application), sometimes the requesting party will accept other forms of proof. Might be worth asking if they'll take bank statements showing the deposits stopping or smth similar

0 coins

That's a great idea, I'll def ask about that. Thanks!

congrats on no longer needing benefits! hope you landed a sweet new gig 😎

Thanks! Yeah, finally got something after months of searching. Feels good to be back at work

Living the dream! 🎉 Mind sharing what industry you're in? Job market's been rough

That's awesome news! The job hunt can be such a grind. What field did you end up landing in?

I actually had to do this recently too! Just to add to what others have said - if you're having trouble getting through by phone, you can also try faxing your request to EDD. The fax number is usually less busy than the phone lines. Make sure to include your full name, SSN, and claim number in your request. Also keep a copy of everything you send - you might need to follow up multiple times before they actually send the letter out.

0 coins

Thanks for the fax tip! I never would have thought of that. Do you happen to know what the fax number is? And how long did it take for them to respond when you faxed your request?

0 coins

I don't have the exact fax number off the top of my head, but you can find it on the EDD website under their contact info. When I faxed mine, it took about 10-12 business days to get a response. Definitely faster than trying to get through on the phone! Just make sure your fax goes through successfully - I had to try a couple times because their fax line was busy.

Just wanted to chime in with another option - if you have access to your EDD online portal, sometimes you can download a "benefit history" or "payment summary" document that shows your claim dates and end date. It's not exactly a formal letter, but some places will accept it as proof that your benefits have ended. Worth checking your account first before going through the hassle of calling or faxing!

0 coins

This is such a good point! I always forget about checking the online portal first. The benefit history document might be exactly what some places need and it's way faster than waiting for an official letter. Definitely worth trying this route first before dealing with phone calls or fax machines!

Another option that worked for me was requesting the letter through the EDD's secure messaging system if you have access to UI Online. Go to your inbox, click "Compose," and select "Unemployment Insurance Benefits" as the category. In your message, explain that you need written confirmation that your UI benefits have ended and include your claim details. I got my letter within about a week using this method, and it was way less stressful than trying to call. Just make sure to be specific about what you need the letter for - they sometimes ask follow-up questions if your request isn't clear enough.

This is really helpful! I didn't even know there was a secure messaging option. That sounds way more convenient than dealing with phone hold times. Did you have to provide any specific information beyond just your claim details, or was it pretty straightforward once you sent the message?

0 coins

Pretty straightforward! I just included my full name, SSN, claim number, and the dates my benefits started/ended. I also mentioned that I needed it for employment verification purposes. They didn't ask for any additional info - just sent the letter directly. The secure messaging route is definitely underrated!

For what it's worth, I just went through this process last week! I used the secure messaging system that @Natalie Wang mentioned and it was surprisingly smooth. Took about 8 days to get the official letter in the mail. One thing I'd add is to be really specific about the format you need - some places want it on official letterhead while others are fine with a simple statement. I mentioned in my message that I needed it for "proof of benefit termination for employment verification" and they sent exactly what I needed. Way better than sitting on hold for hours!

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really reassuring to hear it worked smoothly for you. The tip about specifying the format is gold - I bet a lot of people don't think to mention that and then end up having to request it again. 8 days is pretty reasonable too compared to some of the horror stories I've heard about EDD response times!

Just want to echo what others have said about the online options being way better than calling! I tried calling EDD for weeks and could never get through. Finally used the secure messaging system and got my letter in about 10 days. One tip I'd add is to screenshot or print your message confirmation when you submit it - that way you have proof you requested it if you need to follow up. Also, if you're in a rush, it might be worth trying multiple methods at once (online message + fax) since their response times can be unpredictable. Good luck getting it sorted!

Drake

That's such a smart tip about screenshotting the confirmation! I never think to do stuff like that but it's so important to have that paper trail, especially with government agencies. The idea of trying multiple methods at once is brilliant too - better to have redundancy than wait weeks only to find out your request got lost somewhere in the system. Thanks for the practical advice!

I actually went through this exact same situation about 2 months ago! Here's what worked best for me: I started by checking my UI Online account first to see if there was already a benefit summary available for download (there wasn't, but worth checking). Then I sent a secure message through the UI Online portal explaining that I needed written confirmation that my benefits had ended, including my claim number and the reason I needed it. Got the official letter in about 9 days, which was way faster than I expected! If you don't have access to UI Online or the secure messaging isn't working, definitely try the fax option before calling - their phone lines are absolutely brutal. Make sure whatever method you use, you keep records of when you submitted your request so you can follow up if needed. The letter they sent me was on official EDD letterhead and had all the details any employer or agency would need. Hope this helps and congrats on finding new work!

This is super comprehensive, thanks for sharing your whole process! 9 days is actually really good timing for EDD. I'm definitely going to try the secure messaging route first since so many people have had success with it. The tip about keeping records is clutch - I've learned the hard way with other government stuff that you always need that paper trail. Really appreciate you taking the time to lay out all the steps!

I just went through this exact process about 3 weeks ago! The secure messaging through UI Online is definitely the way to go - took about 7 days for me to get the official letter. One thing I'd add that I didn't see mentioned is that you can also request a "Notice of Determination" which shows your claim status and end date. Sometimes this document works just as well as a formal letter depending on what you need it for. Also, if you're applying for jobs or benefits that require proof your UI ended, you might want to request 2-3 copies of the letter since some places want to keep the original. The EDD will usually send multiple copies if you ask in your initial request. Way easier than having to go through the whole process again later!

0 coins

Great point about requesting multiple copies upfront! I learned that lesson the hard way when I had to go through the whole process twice because my landlord needed to keep the original and I needed another copy for my new employer. The Notice of Determination tip is really useful too - I had no idea that was even an option. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I actually just dealt with this same situation a few months back! Based on all the great advice here, I'd definitely recommend trying the secure messaging through UI Online first - it seems to be the most reliable method based on everyone's experiences. Just wanted to add one thing I learned: if you're requesting the letter for a specific purpose (like apartment applications, loan applications, etc.), it helps to mention that in your request because they can sometimes provide additional documentation that might be useful. Also, don't stress too much about the process - it might seem overwhelming with all the different options, but pretty much everyone here got their letter eventually! The system works, it just takes a bit of patience. Good luck with whatever you need the letter for!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm new here but dealing with the same issue. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences - makes the whole process seem way less intimidating. The secure messaging route sounds like the best bet based on all the success stories. Thanks for the encouragement that it actually works out in the end! 🙏

Welcome to the community! I went through this exact same process about 6 months ago when I transitioned off UI benefits. Definitely agree with everyone recommending the secure messaging through UI Online - that's exactly what worked for me too. Took about 8-10 days to get the official letter in the mail. One small tip I'd add: when you send your secure message, make sure to include your phone number in case they need to follow up with any questions. In my case, they called to clarify what specific dates I needed documented, which actually sped up the process. Also, if you're in a time crunch and need something immediately while waiting for the official letter, your final payment stub or the "claim summary" in your UI Online account might work as temporary proof for some situations. Obviously depends on what you need it for, but it can buy you some time if needed. The whole process is definitely more straightforward than it initially seems - just takes a bit of patience with EDD's timing! Hope you get your letter quickly! 📄
