NYS Department of Labor how to write a letter of unemployment for landlord verification

My landlord is asking me to provide a letter proving I'm receiving unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor. I've never had to write one of these before and I'm not sure what information needs to be included. Do I need to get something official from the NYS Department of Labor website or can I write my own letter? I'm worried about including the wrong details and having my rental application rejected. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

You don't write the letter yourself - you need an official verification letter from NYS Department of Labor. Log into your my.ny.gov account and look for 'Request Benefit Verification Letter' under your unemployment services. This gives you an official document with your benefit amount and dates that landlords will accept.

Thank you! I found the option in my account. It shows my weekly benefit amount and everything. Much more official looking than anything I could write myself.

If you can't access the online verification letter for some reason, you can also call NYS Department of Labor directly. Though getting through can be challenging with their high call volume. I've heard some people have success using claimyr.com to help get connected to an actual agent faster. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Might be worth trying if you're having trouble with the online system.

Never heard of that service before but the phone system is definitely frustrating. I spent 3 hours on hold last week just to ask about my job search requirements.

Make sure the verification letter is recent - some landlords want it dated within 30 days. Also keep in mind it will show your gross weekly benefit amount before taxes, so budget accordingly if you're using this for rent calculations.

Wait I'm confused - are we talking about a letter TO unemployment or FROM unemployment?? I thought this was about writing to NYS Department of Labor about something but now everyone's talking about getting letters from them??

The OP needs a letter FROM NYS Department of Labor proving they receive benefits. It's for their landlord, not something they send to the unemployment office.
