EDD claim closure confirmation letter - will they mail documentation when I ended my claim?
Last week I went through the certification process and marked that I wanted to stop my unemployment claim since I found a new job (starting Monday - yay!). Now my HR department is asking for documentation showing my unemployment benefits have ended. Will EDD automatically send me some kind of letter confirming my claim is closed? Or do I need to call them? I checked my UI Online account but don't see anything there that I could print out as proof. Has anyone gone through this before and know what documentation I need to provide to my new employer?

•Thanks! That's what I was afraid of. My HR department is being really strict about needing documentation for everything.

You can request a verification of benefits letter through UI Online. Go to the 'Contact EDD' section and request a proof of benefits document. They can generate one showing your claim has been closed. Alternatively, you can go to your claim history and take a screenshot of where it shows your last payment date, along with printing your most recent certification where you indicated you found work. Some employers will accept that as documentation.

•Thank you so much! I'll try the Contact EDD section right now. I didn't realize I could request that type of documentation online.

EDD never sent me anything when I stopped certifying. I just printed my payment history showing the last payment date and that worked fine for my employer. Most HR departments just want proof you're not double-dipping by collecting unemployment while working.

I tried what @profile2 suggested last month but never got a response from EDD through the Contact section. Ended up calling them and waiting FOREVER. The agent I finally reached said they could mail me a letter confirming my benefits were stopped, but it would take 7-10 business days to arrive. Did you check your inbox in UI Online? Sometimes they put notifications there instead of mailing things.

•I did check my UI Online inbox but there's nothing there about my claim ending. I need this documentation by Friday for my onboarding paperwork, so waiting 7-10 days for mail won't work. Maybe I should try calling...

When you indicated you wanted to stop claiming benefits, did you do it through the regular certification process or actually close your claim? There's a difference. Just stopping certification temporarily pauses benefits, while formally closing a claim ends it completely. For HR purposes, you can print a few documents that should suffice: 1. Your claim summary showing the last payment date 2. A copy of your final certification where you reported returning to work 3. A screenshot of your UI Online homepage showing claim status If they need an official document directly from EDD, you'll need to contact them by phone and request a formal verification letter. The regular UI Online request system works for some documentation, but for claim closure confirmation, you typically need to speak with an agent directly.

•I think I just indicated I was returning to work on my certification, I didn't formally close the claim. I didn't realize there was a difference! I'll try gathering those documents you suggested and if HR says that's not enough, I guess I'll have to call EDD. Thank you for explaining!

I was in this EXACT same situation last month!! The EDD phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE to get through - I tried for 3 days straight and kept getting the 'too many callers' message. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have this system where they keep calling EDD for you until they get through, then call you back when they have an agent on the line. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD agent was able to email me a verification letter the same day. Totally worth it when you're on a deadline for new job paperwork.

•I used that service too! It was the only way I could actually reach someone at EDD after trying for DAYS on my own.

•Thank you for this suggestion! I've been trying to call all morning and keep getting the 'maximum callers' message. I'll check out that service if I can't get through by this afternoon. Really need this documentation ASAP.

•You don't HAVE to formally close your claim. If you stop certifying, your claim becomes inactive after two weeks of not certifying. However, formally closing a claim is helpful if you need documentation showing you're no longer receiving benefits, like the original poster needs for their new employer.

Update for everyone: The EDD website now has a specific process for this situation. Log into UI Online, go to 'Contact EDD' and select 'Ask EDD.' Choose the category 'Unemployment Insurance Benefits' and then select the sub-category 'Claim Information.' In your message, specifically request a 'Verification of Claim Closure' or 'Proof of Benefits Termination' letter. This should generate a document you can download from your UI Online inbox within 5-7 business days. For immediate needs, calling is still the fastest option, but the online request will work if you have time to wait.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! I just submitted the request through Ask EDD, but since I need the documentation by Friday, I'll still try calling tomorrow. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!
