Started new job - how to properly end EDD unemployment benefits?

I just landed a full-time position after 4 months of unemployment (finally!!). I've been receiving regular UI benefits but start my new job next Monday. Do I need to formally notify EDD that I no longer need benefits or do I just stop certifying? I don't want to get hit with an overpayment notice later if I handle this wrong. Also wondering if I should report my last week where I worked 2 days of training but haven't gotten paid yet? Thanks for any help!

Congratulations on your new job! You have two options: 1) You can stop certifying altogether, or 2) You can continue certifying but report your work and earnings accurately. Option #2 is technically the correct approach. For your training days, yes, you should absolutely report those hours even if you haven't been paid yet. EDD asks about work performed, not just when you received payment. When you certify, you'll report your hours worked, estimated earnings, and answer "yes" to the question about whether you worked.

Thank you! So if I understand correctly, I should certify one more time to report those training days, then I can just stop certifying after that? The EDD website isn't very clear about the proper procedure.

This is TERRIBLE advice! You absolutely should NOT just stop certifying without reporting your final week properly. You need to report any work performed during a benefit week, even training hours. The right way is to certify one last time, report the work/earnings, then you can stop. Otherwise you risk an overpayment situation that could come back to bite you.

Ok so i was in ur same situation last October. Heres what I did: 1. certified one last time and reported the new job and hours worked 2. reported my estimated earnings before i even got my first paycheck 3. answered YES to finding full time work 4. after that just stopped certifying EDD adjusted my final payment based on the hours I reported. I got a partial payment for the days I wasn't working. The system automatically closed my claim after several weeks of not certifying. Never had any problems after that!

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll make sure to report my training days and then just stop certifying after that final certification. Really appreciate the step-by-step explanation.

I'm confused about something similar... I got a part-time job (not full-time like OP) and I'm not sure if I should keep certifying or what??? Anyone know the rules for part-time work with EDD??

For part-time work, you should continue certifying and report your part-time earnings. EDD will reduce your weekly benefit amount according to their formula, but you may still qualify for partial benefits if you earn less than your weekly benefit amount. The formula is roughly: for every dollar you earn, your benefit is reduced by about 75 cents of that amount.

Make sure you certify for that final period and report your work/hours accurately. The biggest mistake people make is just disappearing without properly closing their claim. This can lead to overpayment notices months later when EDD matches employment records with your claim. Also, keep your UI Online account information (username/password) accessible for at least a year. You might need to log in later to get your 1099-G for tax purposes, or if there are any issues that need resolution.

Didn't even think about taxes and the 1099-G form! Good point about keeping my login info. I'll save it somewhere secure. Thanks!

I tried calling EDD to notify them when I got a job and it was IMPOSSIBLE to get through! Spent days trying different numbers and times, always got the "we're experiencing high call volumes" message. So frustrating. I finally found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an EDD rep within 15 minutes. They have a demo video of how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep confirmed I should just certify one last time with my work info and that would properly close things out. Worth it for peace of mind!

is that service legit?? seems kinda sketchy paying just to talk to edd

It worked for me! I was skeptical too but after 3 days of trying to get through on my own, I was desperate. They connected me to an actual EDD rep who helped close out my claim properly.

Everyone saying "just stop certifying" is WRONG! The official EDD procedure is to report your return to work during your final certification period. You need to indicate the date you started working, report any hours/wages for that period, and answer YES to the question about obtaining full-time work. If you don't do this proper closeout, EDD might continue thinking you're eligible and could even issue payments you're not entitled to. Then months later when their system catches up, you'll get hit with an overpayment notice plus potential penalties!

100% agree! This happened to my roommate - he just stopped certifying when he got a job, then 8 months later got a notice saying he owed $3800 in overpayment because he never officially reported his employment. Such a hassle to deal with after the fact!

wait do i need to call them too or just do the online certification thing?? the website is so confusing

You don't need to call. Just complete your final certification online through UI Online and make sure to report your work/hours/earnings accurately. The system will process that information and adjust your final payment accordingly. Calling is only necessary if you have a specific issue that can't be resolved through the online portal.

Thanks everyone for the great advice! Just submitted my final certification and reported my training days. The system reduced my payment for those days but still gave me benefits for the days I didn't work. I answered YES to finding full-time work and put my start date. Feels good to have this handled properly! Appreciate all the help from this community.

You're welcome, and congratulations again on your new job! You did everything correctly. Your claim will automatically close after a few weeks of not certifying. Be sure to keep an eye on your UI Online inbox for a couple more weeks just in case EDD sends any notifications.
