EDD reporting after finding new job - continue certifying or notify EDD?
Hi everyone! So I've been collecting unemployment for about 5 weeks (thank goodness finally got approved after that nightmare identity verification). Just got hired at a marketing firm starting next Monday! Super excited but now I'm confused about what to do with my EDD claim. Do I need to officially notify EDD somewhere on the website that I found work? Or do I just stop certifying when the next certification period comes up? I still have weeks available to certify for (this past week before I start the new job). Should I certify for that week and report that I found work, or just ghost EDD completely now that I have a job? Don't want to mess anything up and get hit with an overpayment later!

CONGRATS on the new job!!!! I had the same question last year. You should definitely certify for that last week and report that you found work. There's a question during certification that asks if you refused work or something like that - that's where you tell them you got a job. DO NOT just stop certifying without telling them!! I did that and got a scary notice 6 months later asking why I stopped claiming.

•Thank you!! That's super helpful. So I'll certify for this last week and make sure to indicate I found work. Is there a specific place to enter my start date? I want to make sure they know exactly when I'm starting.

You definitely need to certify for any eligible weeks up until your start date. During certification, when it asks if you're still unemployed, that's when you indicate you found work. They'll ask for your start date and hours. Make sure you report any earnings for that week if your new job starts mid-week. After that final certification, your claim stays open for a year but goes inactive when you stop certifying. If something happens with the new job, you can start certifying again without filing a new claim (as long as it's within the benefit year).

•Oh that's good to know that my claim stays open for a year! Hopefully everything works out with this job, but it's reassuring to know I wouldn't have to go through the whole application nightmare again if something happens in the next few months.

•That's incorrect advice. You should properly report when you find work during your certification process. If you just stop certifying without reporting your employment, it can create issues later, including possible overpayment notices and investigations.

When this happened to me last year I just reported my earnings during certification like normal, put in my hours, and checked the box that I was no longer looking for work because I found employment. I put my start date and that was it. EDD just stopped sending payments and I never heard from them again. Make sure you certify through your last week of unemployment though!

•Same thing I did! Just be honest about the date you started working and you'll be fine. I even got a partial payment for the week I started because I only worked 2 days that week. The system calculates it all for you.

Just to add to what others have said, you'll want to report any income from your new job during the week you're certifying for, even if you haven't been paid yet. EDD goes by when you earned the money, not when you received it. And keep a record of your final certification showing you reported finding work, just in case there are any questions later. Screenshots are your friend!

•This is sooo important! I got an overpayment notice because I reported when I got PAID not when I WORKED. Had to appeal and it was a headache. EDD wants to know when you EARNED the money, regardless of when the check comes.

I had to call EDD about this same situation because the website was confusing. Spent 4 hours trying to get through to a real person. Finally found Claimyr.com which got me connected to an EDD agent in about 20 minutes (they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km). The agent confirmed you need to certify for all weeks up until you start working, then report your employment during certification. They'll also ask for employer info so have that ready.

•Oh wow - I didn't know there were services to help get through to EDD. Thankfully I think I understand what to do now based on everyone's advice, but I'll keep that in mind if I run into any issues with my final certification!

Dont forget those taxes!!! EDD doesn't automatically withhold taxes on unemployment so you might owe at tax time. I always forget this part lol

•Thanks for the reminder! I did opt for tax withholding when I set up my claim, so hopefully that helps. Will definitely set aside some money just in case though.

I got a job back in February and I just stopped certifying. Didn't have any problems. But reading these comments now I'm worried I did it wrong? Should I contact EDD now or just leave it?

•You're probably fine if it's been several months with no contact from EDD. But for future reference (and for the original poster), the correct procedure is to report finding work during your final certification. It creates a clean end to your claim and prevents any confusion later.
