EDD reporting for final week when starting new job - certification question urgent!
After 4 months of job hunting (and stressing), I finally landed a full-time position starting on March 14th! While I'm thrilled about the new gig, I'm a bit confused about how to properly report this to EDD for my final certification. Do I just certify normally for this week (March 5-10) and then for the week of March 12-17, select that I started working? Is there a specific way to indicate it's full-time employment? Do I need to call EDD or complete some separate form to officially notify them I'm employed? I don't want to mess anything up and end up with an overpayment situation later. Thanks for any help!

Congrats on the new job! Here's what you need to do: For your certification covering March 5-10, report as usual with any work/earnings during that period. For the week including March 14th (when you start), you'll report that you worked, enter the hours and earnings for those days. The system will ask if you're still unemployed - select NO and indicate you have full-time work. That's it! The system calculates partial benefits for that transition week automatically. No need to call or file separate paperwork - your certification serves as your official notification. Just be accurate with your start date, hours, and earnings to avoid overpayment issues.

•Thank you so much! That makes perfect sense. So I don't need to worry about contacting them separately - the certification process handles it all. Such a relief to know it's straightforward. I was afraid there was some special form I'd missed.

just remember to report your EXACT earnings for that partial week when u start the job. they'll reduce ur benefits for that week based on what u earned but u might still get something if u only worked like 3-4 days that week. congrats btw!

•Thanks! I'll be super careful with reporting the exact earnings. I start on Thursday the 14th, so it'll be just 2 days that week. Appreciate the tip!

THEY DON'T MAKE THIS EASY DO THEY?? When I started my job last year I called EDD like 17 TIMES to make sure I was doing it right and NEVER got through! Then 6 months later got hit with an "overpayment notice" because I apparently did something wrong even though I tried to report correctly. Still fighting with them about it. The system is DESIGNED to trip people up!!

•I had a similar experience trying to talk to someone at EDD about reporting my new job. After wasting hours over several days trying to get through, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in under 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration and I was able to confirm exactly how to report my final weeks. Their website is claimyr.com if you're still dealing with getting through to EDD.

•OMG wish I knew about that BEFORE I got the overpayment notice!! Might check it out to help with my appeal. Thx for sharing!

Make sure you report your gross wages (before taxes) for that partial week, not your net pay. I made that mistake and ended up having to repay some benefits + a false statement penalty. Also, keep a copy of your final certification showing you reported starting work just in case there's any question later. Screenshot that final certification page!

•That's really good advice about reporting gross wages - I would have probably reported after-tax amounts. And I'll definitely screenshot everything. Don't want any issues down the road!

hey does anyone know if we can still access our ui online account after we stop claiming? i have all my tax docs in there but im starting a new job next month too

•Yes, your UI Online account remains accessible even after you stop claiming benefits. You'll be able to access your 1099-G forms and other tax documents for at least 18 months. Just log in with your regular credentials. If you need older documents (beyond 18 months), you may need to request them directly from EDD.

I recommend keeping a written record of your last day of unemployment (March 13th) and first day of work (March 14th). Include details like the employer name, address, supervisor contact, hourly rate/salary, and work schedule. If EDD contacts you later for an eligibility interview about this transition period (which happens randomly), having these details handy will make the process much smoother. Also, don't forget to report any severance or vacation payouts from previous employers if you received any - those count as income too.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I'll definitely make a record with all those details just to be safe. No severance or vacation payouts in my case, but good to know that those would need to be reported.

What happens if u accidentally put the wrong start date for your new job? I think I messed up mine by one day when I certified last month... should I call them to fix it or just leave it?

•If it's just off by one day, it's probably not a major issue, but technically you should report the correction. You can try submitting a message through UI Online using the Contact EDD feature, or call if it's causing you significant anxiety. Being proactive about corrections looks better than having them discover discrepancies later. Include your correct start date and explain it was an honest mistake in reporting.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! Just to make sure I have this right: I'll certify normally for March 5-10, then for the week of March 12-17, I'll report that I worked Thursday and Friday (14-15th), enter my gross wages, indicate I have full-time work now, and that will be it. No separate notifications needed. I'll definitely screenshot everything and keep detailed records just in case. This community has been so helpful during this whole unemployment journey!
