Reporting new employment to EDD - where exactly on UI Online to update job status?
After 5 months of unemployment hell, I finally landed a job starting next Monday (yay!!). I know I need to report this to EDD but can't find the exact place to do it on UI Online. Is it just through the regular bi-weekly certification where it asks if you worked? Or is there a separate place to report 'I'm employed now, stop my benefits'? My friend said there's a specific section for this but I can't find it anywhere on the dashboard. Don't want to mess this up and get hit with an overpayment later!

Congrats on the new job! You don't need to do anything special - just report your work and earnings accurately on your next certification. When they ask "Did you work?" select Yes, enter your employer info and earnings. Once you report full-time work and earnings above your weekly benefit amount, your claim becomes inactive. Make sure to report ALL hours worked, even training hours! The system automatically adjusts your benefits based on what you report.

•Thank you! So there's no separate "I'm employed now" button or anything? Just the regular certification? That seems too simple but I'll trust you on this.

MAKE SURE you keep certifying until you actually get your first paycheck!!! I stopped certifying the minute I got hired and ended up losing 2 weeks of benefits I was actually entitled to. EDD doesn't care when you get HIRED, they care when you get PAID. Big difference that cost me almost $1,200!!!

•Omg really? I was about to stop certifying immediately. So I should still certify next week even though I'll be working, but just report the hours/earnings? What if I don't know exactly what my first paycheck will be?

•Yes, keep certifying until you receive your first full paycheck. For the weeks before you get paid, you'll report the hours worked but $0 income (if you haven't been paid yet). Once you do get paid, you'll report those earnings on the certification for the period when you RECEIVED the money, not when you worked the hours. EDD's system is based on when payment is received, not when work is performed.

Congratulations on your new job! You'll handle this through your regular bi-weekly certification. When certifying, you'll: 1. Answer "Yes" to the question asking if you worked 2. Enter your employer information 3. Report hours worked and earnings (even if not yet paid) 4. Continue certifying until you receive your first paycheck Remember that for partial weeks, you may still qualify for reduced benefits if your earnings are below your weekly benefit amount. The system calculates this automatically. Once your reported earnings exceed your benefit amount for a few weeks, your claim becomes inactive - no separate "termination" process needed.

I had same question when I got hired back in February! Definitely keep certifying until you actually get paid. My company pays monthly and I almost missed out on 3 whole weeks of benefits before my first check came in. When you certify just be honest about your work hours even if you haven't been paid yet.

•Oh wow monthly pay would be tough! Mine is bi-weekly thankfully. Did you have any issues with EDD questioning your certifications during that transition period?

•Nope! System worked exactly as it should. I reported my hours each week even though I hadn't been paid yet. My benefits reduced based on those hours. Then when I got my first actual paycheck, I just stopped qualifying for benefits and the payments naturally stopped. No issues or questions from EDD.

I've been trying to contact EDD about this exact same issue for weeks but can't get through on their phone lines. I've called probably 50+ times and either get a busy signal or it hangs up saying "we're experiencing high call volume." Does anyone know a better way to reach them? I need to ask some questions about my specific situation with starting part-time work.

•I was stuck in the same situation last month and finally used Claimyr to get through to EDD. It's a service that basically connects you with an EDD rep - saved me hours of frustration. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or their website claimyr.com. Totally worth it for me since I needed specific answers about my part-time earnings reporting that weren't clear on the EDD website.

•Thanks, I'll check it out! Did you get clear answers from EDD about part-time work reporting?

ANOTHER THING TO REMEMBER: If you get hired but then the job falls through in the first few weeks (happened to my husband - company had a hiring freeze 2 weeks after he started), you can reactivate your claim if it's still within your benefit year! Don't panic if that happens, just KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING from your employer!!

Thank you everyone for the helpful advice! I'll definitely keep certifying until I get my first paycheck, and I'll make sure to accurately report my hours even before I get paid. I'll also take screenshots of everything just to be safe. Really appreciate all the tips - this community has been so helpful throughout my unemployment journey!
