EDD payment amount suddenly lower - no explanation given. What to do?
Hey everyone, I'm having an issue with my unemployment payment. I just got paid but the amount is way lower than what I was expecting. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure if there's been a change in the system or if it's just a mistake. Any advice on what I should do next?

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. My payment was like half of what it should've been this week. Did you get any kind of notice or explanation from EDD?

•Nope, no notice at all. That's why I'm so confused. I'm gonna try calling them tomorrow but I'm not looking forward to being on hold for hours 😩

•Good luck with that call, OP. Last time I tried, I was on hold for 3 hours and then got disconnected. The system is such a joke rn 🤡

This happened to me last month. Turns out they had applied an overpayment deduction without telling me. Check your account online, there might be some info there that explains the lower amount.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll def check that out. Didn't even think about overpayment stuff.

Hey guys, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•Sounds kinda sketchy. Is it legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

•I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. I was desperate after trying for weeks to get through. The $20 was worth it to finally get my issue resolved.

•How long did you have to wait once you used the service?

•It took about 2 hours, but I just went about my day and they called me when an agent was on the line. Way better than being stuck to my phone all day.

Here's what you need to do to resolve this issue: 1. Check your EDD account online first. Look for any messages or notices about changes to your claim. 2. Review your payment history. Compare the current payment to previous ones to see if there's a pattern or sudden change. 3. Calculate your expected payment. Make sure you're accounting for taxes and any other deductions. 4. If you still can't figure it out, you NEED to call EDD. Be prepared with your claim number and all relevant dates. 5. If calling doesn't work, try reaching out via their contact form on the website. Sometimes they respond faster that way. 6. As a last resort, contact your local assembly member's office. They often have direct lines to EDD and can help push your case. Remember, don't cash the check or spend the money if you think it's a mistake. If it turns out to be an error in your favor, you'll have to pay it back later. Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.

•Great advice! I'd add that keeping a log of all your calls and attempts to contact EDD can be helpful if you need to escalate the issue later.

•Preach! 🙌 It's like they're trying to make it as difficult as possible. We're already struggling and this just adds to the stress.

Has anyone tried reaching out to EDD through social media? Sometimes companies respond faster when you call them out publicly lol

Just a heads up, there was a system update last week. Might be related to your payment issue. They posted about it on their Twitter but of course didn't mention it could affect payments 🙄

•Oh snap, I had no idea. Thanks for the info! Guess I better start following their social media for updates 😑

OP, make sure you double-check your certification answers. I once accidentally clicked the wrong box and it messed up my whole payment. It's easy to miss when you're in a hurry.

This might sound weird, but have you checked your bank account? Sometimes the EDD website shows the wrong amount but the correct payment goes through. Happened to me once and I freaked out for nothing lol

•Good thinking! Just checked and unfortunately the bank shows the same lower amount. Worth a shot tho!

I went through something similar a few months ago and it turned out to be a quarterly earnings review that triggered an automatic adjustment. EDD sometimes recalculates your benefit amount based on updated wage data from employers, but they're terrible at communicating this. Check if you received any work income in the last quarter that might have been reported late by an employer - even small amounts can trigger a recalculation. Also look for any notices in your UI Online inbox, sometimes they bury important info there. If you can't find anything obvious, definitely follow @Mateo Rodriguez's advice above - his step-by-step approach is solid. Just be patient, it can take weeks to get answers but usually there IS a reason, even if they don't tell you upfront. Keep us posted on what you find out! This stuff affects all of us.
