EDD SDI payment confusion - First deposit only covers 4 days instead of full claim period?

I'm really confused about my first disability payment. I just received my EDD debit card and when I checked online, it shows my payment only covers 4 days (Jan 11-15, 2025) but my actual disability claim period is from Jan 4 to Feb 3, 2025. Does this mean I'm only getting paid for those 4 days total? Or is this just the first installment and I'll get more payments for the rest of my claim period? My doctor certified me for the full month. This is my first time on disability so I'm completely lost about how the payment schedule works. I need to budget for rent next month and don't know what to expect. Any help would be appreciated!

You're getting the rest of your payments! The first payment is often shorter because of the 7-day waiting period that applies to SDI claims. The waiting period isn't paid, and it looks like you're seeing a partial payment that covers from when your waiting period ended until their first payment processing date. EDD typically processes disability payments every two weeks after that initial payment. You should receive your next payment in about 10-14 days that covers the next period.

Oh thank goodness! So I'll keep getting payments throughout my claim as long as I'm certified? That's such a relief. I was panicking thinking I'd only get 4 days worth for a whole month of disability.

0 coins

first payment is always partial aftr the waitng perod. They pay u every 2 wks after that

0 coins

Thanks! Do they automatically process the payments or do I need to certify again?

0 coins

SAME EXACT THING happened to me!!! I freaked out thinking they were only paying me for 4 days when I was approved for 6 weeks! Called EDD like 50 times and couldn't get through. The system is so frustrating!!

0 coins

Did you eventually get all your payments? How long did it take between the first small payment and the rest of them?

0 coins

This is a normal part of how EDD disability works. You have a 7-day unpaid waiting period at the beginning of your claim. Then they pay you for the days after that waiting period until their next regular payment processing date. After that, you'll receive payments approximately every two weeks. It's confusing because they don't explain this very well on their website, but you'll get paid for your entire claim period (minus that initial waiting week). Just make sure your doctor continues to certify if your claim goes beyond the initial certification period.

0 coins

That makes sense. My doctor certified me for 4 weeks initially. If I need more time, when should I ask for another certification? I don't want any gaps in payment.

0 coins

Ask your doctor for a new certification about a week before your current one expires. This gives EDD time to process it and avoid payment delays. You can check your current certification end date on SDI Online under 'Claim Details'.

I've been through this exact same situation and struggled to get answers from EDD! After spending hours trying to call them with no luck, I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. It was the only way I could get clear answers about my payment schedule. Their website is claimyr.com if you're still having trouble reaching EDD directly.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! I might try that if I have any issues with my future payments. Did the EDD rep explain why they do the partial payment first instead of just waiting and paying the full amount?

0 coins

Yes, the rep explained they do partial payments first so people aren't waiting too long for their initial funds. They said it's their standard process - first payment after waiting period, then regular payments every two weeks. It's just poorly communicated on their website!

0 coins

you get payment for the whole period except the 7 day waiting period thats never paid... they just start with a small payment and then do every 2 weeks after that if ur claim is Jan 4 to Feb 3, you won't get paid for Jan 4-10 (waiting period), then you'll get payments for Jan 11 through Feb 3

0 coins

do u know if pregnancy disability has waiting period too? or only regular SDI?

0 coins

Yes, pregnancy disability (which is part of SDI) also has the 7-day waiting period. The only exception is if you had another SDI claim that ended within 60 days of this new claim, then the waiting period might be waived.

0 coins

This is actually a common misunderstanding with SDI. Your first payment indeed only covers those first few days after the waiting period ends until their next payment processing cycle. For your timeline: - Jan 4-10: 7-day unpaid waiting period - Jan 11-15: Your first payment (which you received) - Jan 16-29: Your next payment (should arrive around Jan 31) - Jan 30-Feb 3: Final payment (arrives around Feb 5) Each payment will be calculated based on your weekly benefit amount. The system is designed to get you some money quickly, then regular payments afterward. If you need to verify this information or have questions about future payments, calling EDD directly is your best option.

Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! That timeline really helps me understand what to expect. I'm relieved to know more payments are coming.

@Laila Prince all the questions you asked did your payments start rolling in regular after the first payment

1 coin

when I was on disability they sent me payment every 2 weeks except the first one was small like yours. dont worry youll get the rest! one time I had problem with a payment not showing up and I emailed them through the SDI online portal and they actually fixed it pretty quick

0 coins

That's good to know! So if I have issues, I should try the email feature in the portal rather than calling? I've heard the phone lines are impossible.

0 coins

yeah the email in the portal worked better for me than calling! they answered in like 3 days. the phone is always busy

One more important thing - make sure you're clear on when your certification expires. If your doctor only certified you until Feb 3rd and you need more time off, you'll need a new certification before that date. If there's a gap in certification, there could be a delay in payments or even claim closure. I'd mark January 27th on your calendar as a reminder to check if you need an extension.

0 coins

Thanks for the reminder! I'll definitely check with my doctor around that time if I need to extend my claim. I hope I'll be recovered by then, but it's good to be prepared just in case.

I went through this exact same confusion when I first applied for SDI! The payment system is really confusing because they don't explain it well upfront. What you're seeing is totally normal - that first payment covers the days right after your waiting period ends until their next processing cycle. You'll definitely get paid for your entire claim period (minus the 7-day waiting period that's never paid). The good news is that after this first partial payment, you should receive regular payments every two weeks until your claim ends on Feb 3rd. I'd recommend logging into SDI Online periodically to track your payments and certification status. It really helps with budgeting when you can see the payment schedule!

I'm new to this community and going through the exact same situation right now! Just got my EDD debit card yesterday and was so confused seeing only a few days covered in my first payment. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about the 7-day waiting period or how the payment schedule works. It's reassuring to know this is normal and that more payments will come every two weeks. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences! This kind of information should really be clearer on the EDD website to prevent all this confusion for first-time applicants.

Welcome to the community! I'm new here too and just went through this same panic when I saw my first payment. It's crazy how poorly EDD explains their payment process - I spent hours researching online trying to figure out if something was wrong with my claim. The waiting period thing especially caught me off guard since it's not mentioned prominently anywhere during the application process. I'm glad this thread exists because it would have saved me so much stress if I had found it earlier! Hopefully EDD will improve their communication about this stuff, but until then at least we have this community to help each other navigate the system.

Hi Laila! Just wanted to chime in as another newcomer who went through this same exact confusion last month. Your situation is completely normal - that first payment really is just a partial payment covering those few days after your waiting period until EDD's next processing cycle. I was in the same boat panicking about rent money! What helped me was setting up a simple calendar with the expected payment dates (every 2 weeks after that first one) so I could plan my budget accordingly. You'll definitely get paid for your full claim period minus that initial 7-day waiting period. The system is just designed to get you some money quickly rather than making you wait for a full two-week cycle. Hang in there - the regular payments will start flowing soon!

0 coins

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really comforting to know I'm not the only one who went through this panic. The calendar idea is brilliant - I'm definitely going to set that up today so I can track when to expect my next payments. It's such a relief to hear from someone who was in the exact same situation and came out fine on the other side. I was literally losing sleep over this thinking something went wrong with my claim! This community has been amazing for getting real answers from people who've actually been through the process.

Hey there! I'm new to this community and just wanted to add my voice to everyone else reassuring you - this is completely normal! I went through the exact same panic when I got my first SDI payment last year. That partial payment really threw me off because like you, I was expecting payment for my full claim period right away. The 7-day waiting period is something they really should explain better during the application process. What helped me was calling it a "partial advance" in my head rather than thinking of it as my full payment - that way I knew more was coming. You'll get your regular bi-weekly payments after this, and honestly once you get into the rhythm of it, the payment schedule becomes pretty predictable. Make sure to keep an eye on your certification dates too! This community has been super helpful for navigating all the EDD quirks.

0 coins

Thanks for the reassurance! I really like that way of thinking about it as a "partial advance" - that mental framing definitely helps reduce the anxiety about it. It's amazing how much clearer everything becomes when you hear from people who've actually gone through the process. I'm definitely going to keep a close eye on my certification dates like you mentioned. This whole experience has really shown me how valuable communities like this are for getting real-world guidance on navigating these government systems!

Hi Laila! I'm new to this community and just went through this exact same experience a few weeks ago. That first partial payment is totally normal - I had the same panic thinking I was only getting paid for those few days! What really helped me understand it was realizing that EDD processes payments on a regular schedule, so that first payment just covers from when your waiting period ended until their next payment date. After that, you'll get regular payments every two weeks that will cover the rest of your claim period. I found it helpful to log into SDI Online regularly to track everything - you can see your payment history and upcoming certification dates there. The waiting period thing really caught me off guard too since it's not explained clearly anywhere! But don't worry, you'll get paid for your full claim period (minus those first 7 days). Welcome to the community - everyone here has been super helpful with navigating the EDD system!

Hi Demi! Thanks for the welcome and for sharing your experience - it's so reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this! I've been checking SDI Online obsessively since getting that first payment, and you're right that it's really helpful for tracking everything. I had no idea about the waiting period until everyone here explained it. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't make this clearer upfront, but I'm grateful for communities like this where people actually explain what to expect. I'm feeling much more confident about the whole process now thanks to everyone's responses!

Hi Landon! Thanks for the detailed explanation - it really helps to hear from someone who just went through this recently! The calendar idea is great, I'm definitely going to do that to track my expected payment dates. It's such a relief to know this is completely normal and that I'll get the full amount I'm entitled to. I was seriously considering calling in sick to work worrying about rent money! This community has been incredible - I wish I had found it before panicking for days thinking something was wrong with my claim. EDD really needs to do a better job explaining their payment process upfront instead of leaving people to figure it out through trial and panic!

Hi Luca! Thanks for sharing your experience - it's so comforting to know I'm not alone in having this panic! I love the calendar idea, that's definitely going to help me stay organized and reduce anxiety about when to expect payments. It's incredible how much stress could be avoided if EDD just had a simple explanation of this process on their website. I've learned more from this community thread than from all the official EDD resources combined! Really appreciate everyone taking the time to explain how this all works - you've all saved me from weeks of unnecessary worry.

Hi Lena! Thanks for the welcome and for sharing your recent experience - it's so reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this! The payment calendar idea seems to be a common recommendation and I'm definitely going to set that up today. It's amazing how this one thread has answered all my questions better than the entire EDD website! I was literally googling "EDD partial payment error" thinking something was broken with my claim. The waiting period thing really should be front and center in their communications instead of buried somewhere in the fine print. Really grateful for everyone in this community taking time to help newcomers navigate this confusing system!

hello i am new here i’ve asked questions but i still have plenty more lets say edd disability took almost a whole month to process my claim and they paid me from 9/17/25 to 10/18/2025 when will my next deposit be

1 coin

Hi Shaibrea! Welcome to the community! Based on what everyone has shared here, EDD typically processes disability payments every 2 weeks after that initial payment. Since you got paid for 9/17-10/18 (which seems like a longer period than usual), your next payment should come around early November - probably within the next week or two. You can check SDI Online to see if there's a scheduled payment date listed. If it's been longer than 2-3 weeks since your last payment, you might want to contact EDD through the portal or try calling to make sure everything is processing normally. Hope this helps!
