EDD SDI payment schedule confusion - will next disability payment come automatically?
I started receiving disability benefits three weeks ago after my surgery, but I'm completely lost about how the payment schedule works. My first payment arrived, but will the next ones come automatically? Do I need to do something to trigger them? I've heard some people say it's every two weeks, but others say it depends on your certification periods? How many days after my last payment (March 12th) should I expect the next one? My bills are piling up and I NEED to know when money is coming in! I've tried calling EDD about 20 times but can't get through to anyone who can explain this. Any help would be massively appreciated!!

Yes, your payments will come automatically as long as you've properly completed your continued claim certification forms. SDI payments are generally issued every two weeks after your initial payment, but only if all paperwork is in order. Make sure your doctor continues submitting the required medical certifications if your disability is ongoing. You can check your payment status in your SDI Online account under 'Payment Activity.

•Thank you! So I do need to keep doing something? What exactly are 'continued claim certification forms'? My doctor submitted the initial paperwork, but nobody told me I had to keep filling out forms to get paid. Where do I find these?

it depends on yr claim type tbh. reg SDI is different from PFL. for disability u usually get paid every 2 wks but ONLY if ur doc does the right paperwork. check ur SDI Online account first.

•I checked my account but it's not very clear. It does say 'disability' claim so I guess it's regular SDI not PFL. Where exactly in the account would it say when my next payment is scheduled?

Your payments should come automatically if everything is set up correctly. Here's how it works: When you first apply for SDI, you receive a DE 2501 form. Your doctor completes their portion establishing your disability. For ONGOING payments, EDD will automatically send you a continued claim certification form (DE 2500A) about every 2 weeks. You MUST complete and return this form to keep receiving benefits. If you haven't received this form yet, that could be why you're confused about the next payment. You should expect your next payment around March 26th IF you've submitted your continued claim certification. Check your SDI Online account under "Forms" to see if there's a continued claim form waiting for you to complete.

•OH! Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I just logged in and checked the Forms section and there IS a continued claim form waiting for me that I had no idea about. I'm going to fill it out right now. Will my payment come quickly after I submit this?

The EDD system is SO FRUSTRATING!! I had the exact same problem last year after my back surgery. They never tell you clearly that you need to keep certifying! I missed TWO payments because of this and ended up with late fees on all my bills. The certification forms are supposed to come in the mail, but half the time they don't even arrive. ALWAYS check your SDI Online account for forms! Don't trust that they'll mail you anything important.

•That's terrible that happened to you! I'm glad I asked here before missing any payments. I just checked my mailbox and nothing from EDD was there, so you're right about not being able to rely on mail.

Quick tip - make a calendar reminder to check for new forms every 2 weeks! That's what got me through my 5-month disability claim last year. The system is weird.

I've been on SDI for 7 months now and lemme tell you, getting through to an actual person at EDD when you have questions is practically impossible. I spent days trying to call about a payment issue. After 45+ calls over 3 days getting disconnected, I finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which connected me to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Totally worth it when you need answers about your claim status or missing forms.

•Thank you for the tip! If I have trouble with these payments after submitting my form, I'll definitely check out that service. 45+ calls is exactly the kind of nightmare I'm trying to avoid.

Anyone else confused about why EDD makes this so complicated? Like why isn't there just a regular payment schedule like with a normal paycheck? And why don't they notify you properly about certification requirements? It's like they WANT people to mess up and miss payments.

•EXACTLY!!! The system seems deliberately designed to be confusing. They could easily send text alerts when forms are ready or payments are processed. It's 2025 for crying out loud! My employer deposits my paycheck automatically every 2 weeks with zero issues, but EDD can't figure out a consistent payment system?

To answer your original question more precisely: After you submit your continued claim certification, payment processing typically takes 1-2 business days if there are no issues with your claim. So if you complete the form today, you should see the payment by early next week. Also, to clear up some confusion in this thread - SDI payments aren't on a fixed schedule like a paycheck because they're based on your certification periods, which can vary based on your disability situation and when forms are submitted. That's why it seems inconsistent compared to regular employment pay.

•Thank you again! I just submitted my form online. The whole system makes more sense now. I'll keep an eye out for the next form in about two weeks too.

•Thanks! My doctor thinks I'll only need about 8 weeks total, so I should be well under that limit.

Just wanted to add that you can also set up direct deposit if you haven't already - it makes the payments come faster than waiting for a check in the mail. You can do this through your SDI Online account under "Payment Preferences." Also, keep all your certification forms and payment records organized in case there are any issues down the line. EDD sometimes asks for documentation if there's ever a question about your claim. Hope your recovery goes smoothly!

•Great advice about direct deposit! I actually just set that up after reading your comment - it was super easy to do online. I'm definitely going to keep organized records too, especially after reading about all the issues people have had with EDD. Thanks for the recovery wishes! It's been tough but this community has been so helpful in navigating all this confusing paperwork.

I went through this same confusion when I first started receiving SDI benefits! The key thing to understand is that SDI payments are tied to your certification periods, not a fixed schedule. Here's what helped me: 1) Always check your SDI Online account weekly for new forms - don't rely on mail delivery, 2) Set phone reminders every 2 weeks to check for your continued claim certification (DE 2500A), and 3) Submit forms as soon as they're available to avoid payment delays. Also, if your doctor needs to submit ongoing medical certifications, make sure they know the deadlines - my payments got delayed once because my doctor was late with paperwork. The system is definitely confusing at first, but once you get into the routine of checking online regularly, it becomes much more manageable. Hang in there!

•This is such helpful advice! I'm a newcomer to all this SDI stuff and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed by the whole process. Your weekly check routine sounds like a lifesaver - I had no idea the mail delivery was so unreliable. I'm definitely going to set up those phone reminders you mentioned. Quick question though - when you say "deadlines" for doctor paperwork, are there specific dates I need to make sure my doctor knows about? I don't want to end up with delayed payments like you experienced. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's really reassuring to know others have figured this system out!

As someone new to this community and SDI benefits, I just want to say thank you to everyone who's shared their experiences here! I'm currently waiting for my own SDI claim to be approved after a workplace injury, and reading through all these responses has been incredibly educational. The fact that you have to keep certifying every two weeks was completely news to me - nobody mentioned that during my initial application process. I'm definitely bookmarking this thread and plan to check my SDI Online account religiously once my benefits start. It's honestly scary how many pitfalls there seem to be in this system, but knowing what to look out for thanks to all of you makes me feel much more prepared. @Joshua Wood, I hope your recovery goes well and your payments start coming through smoothly now that you found that certification form!

•Welcome to the community, @Issac Nightingale! Your comment really resonates with me as someone who just went through this exact learning curve. It's honestly shocking how little information they give you upfront about the ongoing certification requirements - I had no clue either until I found that form sitting in my online account! You're so smart to be preparing ahead of time by reading through everyone's experiences here. The weekly check routine that @Jamal Brown mentioned has already become a lifesaver for me. One thing I d'add from my recent experience: when you do get approved, immediately set up direct deposit and bookmark the SDI Online portal on your phone so you can quickly check for forms even when you re'out and about. Best of luck with your claim approval, and don t'hesitate to ask questions here - this community has been incredible!

As someone who just joined this community and is dealing with my first SDI claim after a recent injury, this entire thread has been absolutely invaluable! I had no idea about the continued claim certification requirements either - like many others here, I was completely in the dark about needing to submit forms every two weeks. Reading everyone's experiences has saved me from potentially missing payments. I'm going to follow all the advice here: checking my SDI Online account weekly, setting up direct deposit immediately when my benefits start, and keeping detailed records of everything. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't make these requirements clearer upfront, but I'm grateful for communities like this where people share real experiences. @Joshua Wood, I hope your surgery recovery is going well and that your payments are now coming through regularly! Thanks to everyone who took the time to explain the process so thoroughly.

•Welcome to the community, @Henry Delgado! I'm also new here and just starting to navigate the SDI system myself. This thread has been such an eye-opener - I had no idea about any of these ongoing certification requirements when I first applied. It's really concerning how many people seem to discover these critical details only through trial and error or community forums like this one. I'm definitely taking notes on everyone's advice about weekly account checks and setting up those biweekly reminders. It sounds like being proactive is absolutely essential with EDD's system. Thanks for adding your voice to this discussion - it's reassuring to know there are others of us figuring this out together. Hope your injury heals well and your claim process goes smoothly!

As a newcomer to both this community and the SDI system, I want to echo what others have said - this thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm currently in the application process after a medical procedure and had absolutely no clue about the ongoing certification requirements. Reading through everyone's experiences has been both eye-opening and honestly a bit overwhelming. It's clear that EDD's communication about these critical details is seriously lacking. I'm taking detailed notes on all the advice here: weekly online account checks, biweekly certification reminders, direct deposit setup, and keeping organized records. The fact that so many people discover these requirements by accident or through missing payments is really concerning. Thank you to everyone who's shared their knowledge and experiences - it's going to save people like me from costly mistakes. @Joshua Wood, I hope you're feeling better and that your payments are coming through smoothly now!

•Welcome to the community, @Elijah O'Reilly! As another newcomer who's been following this thread closely, I completely relate to feeling overwhelmed by all the information. It's honestly a bit scary how many critical details about the SDI process seem to be hidden or poorly communicated by EDD. This community has been such a lifesaver for understanding what's actually required versus what they tell you upfront. I'm also taking notes on everyone's advice - especially the weekly account checks and biweekly reminders. It sounds like staying on top of these certifications is absolutely crucial. I'm curious - have you had any luck getting through to EDD by phone during your application process, or are you finding the same communication issues that others have mentioned? Either way, it seems like this community and the SDI Online portal are going to be our best resources for navigating this system. Thanks for sharing your experience!

As someone completely new to this community and the SDI system, I can't thank everyone enough for sharing their experiences in this thread! I'm currently going through the application process after a work-related injury and honestly had no idea about any of these ongoing certification requirements. Reading through all these responses has been both incredibly helpful and pretty eye-opening about how confusing EDD's system really is. It's shocking that such critical information about biweekly certifications isn't clearly explained during the initial application. I'm definitely going to follow everyone's advice here: set up weekly account checks, create biweekly reminders for certification forms, get direct deposit set up immediately, and keep detailed records of everything. The fact that so many people have missed payments simply because they didn't know about these requirements is really concerning. This community seems like it's going to be invaluable for navigating all of this. @Joshua Wood, I hope your recovery is going well and that you're now getting your payments regularly after finding that certification form!

•Welcome to the community, @PixelPrincess! As another newcomer here, I'm so glad you found this thread too - it's been absolutely invaluable for understanding what we're actually getting into with SDI. Like you, I had zero clue about the biweekly certification requirements when I started my application. It's really frustrating that EDD doesn't make these critical details clear upfront, but at least we're learning about them before potentially missing payments like some others have experienced. I'm also taking notes on all the advice here, especially about those weekly account checks and setting up direct deposit right away. It sounds like being proactive is the only way to successfully navigate this system. Hope your work injury heals well and your application process goes smoothly! This community definitely seems like our best resource for figuring out all the ins and outs that EDD doesn't bother explaining properly.

As a newcomer to this community and SDI benefits, I'm amazed by how helpful this thread has been! I'm currently dealing with my first disability claim after a surgery last month, and like so many others here, I had absolutely no idea about the ongoing certification requirements. The initial paperwork process was confusing enough, but nobody mentioned that I'd need to keep submitting forms every two weeks to continue receiving payments. Reading through everyone's experiences has been such a wake-up call - it's clear that EDD's communication about these critical steps is really lacking. I'm definitely going to implement all the advice shared here: checking my SDI Online account weekly, setting up those biweekly certification reminders, and getting direct deposit set up ASAP. The fact that people are discovering these requirements through missed payments or community forums like this instead of clear communication from EDD is really troubling. Thank you to everyone who's taken the time to share their knowledge and experiences - it's going to save newcomers like me from making costly mistakes while we're already dealing with health issues and financial stress.
