CalWORKs deposit on New Year's Day? Been having to fix delayed payments for months
I've been dealing with this problem where my CalWORKs cash aid isn't getting deposited on the 1st like it's supposed to. For the last 4 months, I've literally had to go into the county office each time to get them to fix it. Super annoying. My question is - will they even deposit my January payment tomorrow since it's New Year's Day? Or am I gonna have to wait until the 2nd and then probably still have to go in? Has anyone gotten their benefits on holidays before? I have rent due and really can't deal with more delays.

Generally, when the 1st falls on a holiday or weekend, benefits should be deposited on the last business day BEFORE the holiday. So you should actually get your CalWORKs payment deposited today (December 31st)! Check your EBT card or account tonight. That said, the fact you've had to go in for 4 months in a row sounds like there's an ongoing system issue with your case. Ask for a supervisor next time you're there and have them document what's causing the recurring problem.

•Wait really?? I had no idea they do it early for holidays! Gonna check my balance tonight then, thanks! And yeah I'll definitely ask for a supervisor this time if it's not there. Every time I go in they say it's 'fixed now' but then next month same problem 🙄

•Exactly! My landlord doesn't care about CalWORKs issues, he just wants his money on time. Did you end up having to go in person to fix it?

Deposits for benefits that would normally be issued on a holiday are typically processed on the previous business day. So your January payment should actually come on December 31st. However, if you've had to physically go into the office for 4 consecutive months to resolve this issue, there's likely a systematic problem with your case. There could be several possibilities: 1. Your payment issuance code might be incorrect in the system 2. There may be a recurring flag on your case that needs permanent resolution 3. Your semi-annual reporting (SAR7) could be causing a temporary hold each month Next time you go in, ask specifically for: - A Case Comment to document the recurring nature of this issue - To speak with a supervisor about a permanent fix - A direct phone number for someone who can help if it happens again This is definitely not normal and shouldn't require monthly in-person visits to resolve.

•Thank you! I never thought about it being something specific with my case like that. I'll definitely ask about those things. Do you think I should bring in my old SAR7 receipts to show them? And is there a specific term I should use when asking about the "payment issuance code" so they know what I'm talking about?

If you've been having to go to the office repeatedly for the same issue, that's ridiculous! Have you tried using Claimyr? I was in a similar situation with my benefits constantly getting held up and I couldn't get through on the county line. Claimyr got me connected to an actual worker in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold or having to go in person. There's a video about how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE - it basically calls the county for you and calls you back when a real person answers. Saved me so much time and frustration dealing with my CalWORKs issues. Might be worth trying before making another trip to the office.

•does that actually work?? i tried calling the county last week and got disconnected 3 times after waiting like 45 min each time 😡

•Yes! That's exactly why I tried it. I got disconnected twice after waiting over an hour each time. With Claimyr I didn't have to sit on hold at all - they did the waiting and called me once they had someone on the line. Definitely saved me from having to take another day off work to go to the office.

They deposit early sometimes but TRUST NOTHING with CalWORKs!! I always plan like its gonna be late cuz half the time IT IS. The whole system is a disaster and the workers dont care that we need to pay rent!!!

•While there can definitely be frustrating delays, it's not accurate to say workers don't care. Most eligibility workers are managing hundreds of cases and are just as frustrated by system limitations. The automated payment system is supposed to issue benefits on schedule, but individual case issues can cause exceptions.

I've been on CalWORKs for 3 years and when the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, they always deposit the day before. So you should see it on the 31st. Also, for your ongoing issue - have you submitted any mid-period reports or had any changes in income recently? Sometimes that can trigger payment holds. But having to go in 4 months straight definitely means something's wrong in your case file. Ask them to check your "issuance code" in the system - that controls how and when your benefits are released.

•OK so I just checked my EBT account and the deposit IS there! First time in forever it actually came when it was supposed to. And no, I haven't had any income changes at all - I'm in the WTW program and my hours have been the same. I'll ask about that issuance code thing though, seems like that might be the problem. Thanks!

my worker told me one time theres a special code they put in the system for ppl who get theres late all the time. its like a priority code or something? my friend has it and she always gets hers on time now. maybe u should ask for that?

•You're referring to the payment issuance codes in the CalWORKs system. There are different codes that control payment timing and priority. If someone has experienced repeated payment delays, they can request a supervisor review and potentially have their issuance code modified to prevent future problems. This is definitely something worth asking about at the next office visit.

Update: Just checked my account and the money IS there! I guess they did deposit it early because of the holiday. Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm still going to ask about that issuance code thing next time I go in to make sure I don't have to keep dealing with this every month.
