Missing January CalFresh pending deposit - benefits not showing up for next month

I'm starting to get worried about my CalFresh benefits for January. Normally my pending benefits show up during the last week of the month (like Dec 26-30) and then become available on the 7th of the following month. It's already December 29th and I don't see any pending deposit on my EBT card for January. Has anyone else noticed their pending benefits aren't showing up? Is this happening to others or just me? I tried calling the county number but got stuck in the automated system for 40 minutes before it hung up on me. My kids are on winter break and we're counting on those benefits for our grocery budget next week.

This has been happening to a lot of people this month because CalFresh is updating their payment processing system. When was your last recertification or SAR7? If your semi-annual report was due in December, that could explain the delay. Otherwise, it's probably just the system update causing delayed pending deposits. Most people should still see their benefits become available on their regular issuance date (the 7th in your case).

Thanks for replying. My SAR7 isn't due until February, and my recertification isn't until July 2025. I didn't receive any notices about changes to my case either. Should I still expect benefits on the 7th even if I don't see them pending? My family really depends on this food assistance.

omg same here!!! my benefits always show pending by now but nothing is there! freaking out bc i have 3 kids and we need food money for next week. did u get any mail about this??

No, I didn't get any mail about it. That's why I'm so worried. Usually they send something if there's a problem with eligibility or if they need more information.

The pending deposit feature is separate from actual benefit issuance. I've had months where I never saw a pending deposit but the benefits still loaded on schedule. The EBT system has been glitchy lately with the pending notifications, but actual benefits have still been processing correctly. If you don't have any outstanding verification requests or reports due, your benefits should load on the 7th as usual. I wouldn't panic until after your normal issuance date passes without benefits.

That's a relief to hear. I hope you're right about it just being a pending notification glitch. I'll try not to worry until after the 7th, but it's hard when you rely on those benefits for feeding your family.

you might be discontinued and dont even know it yet. happened to me last summer. they said they sent a notice but i never got anything. had to reapply and went 2 months with no food stamps. check BenefitsCal account to see if theres any notices

Oh no, that's my worst fear! I just checked my BenefitsCal account and don't see any notices, but the system shows my case is still active. Would it show as discontinued already if that happened?

If you were discontinued, your BenefitsCal account would typically show your case as closed or discontinued. Since it's showing as active, that's a good sign. The online portal is usually up-to-date with case status information.

I work for an organization that helps people with CalFresh issues. This happens fairly often at the end of December due to holiday processing schedules and system maintenance. Most counties run their benefit issuance files a few days differently during the holidays. If your BenefitsCal account shows active and you haven't missed any reporting deadlines, your benefits should still arrive on your normal issuance date. If you're really concerned, I'd recommend using Claimyr to reach a real person at your county office. It's a service that waits on hold for you and calls you when a worker picks up. I've had clients save hours of frustration with it. Their site is claimyr.com and you can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

Thank you for this information! I'll definitely check out Claimyr if my benefits don't show up by the 7th. I had no idea there was a service that could wait on hold for you - that would save me so much time and stress.

has anyone tried this claimyr thing? does it actually work? i spent 3 hrs on hold last month and got disconnected TWICE

i used it last month when they lost my verification documents. got through to a worker in like 45 min instead of waiting on hold all day. they called me when the worker picked up. worth it imo

This isnt the first time the EBT system has issues showing pending benefits. I NEVER trust the pending thing anymore after it caused me so much anxiety last year!!! The actual deposit date is the only thing that matters. If your case is active, you submitted all required paperwork, and your income hasn't changed drastically, your benefits WILL load on your regular issuance date (the 7th). The EBT system and the benefits determination system are SEPARATE and they don't always communicate properly. The pending display is just a courtesy feature and isn't reliable - especially during holiday weeks when they do system maintenance.

Thank you for sharing this - it makes me feel better knowing others have experienced this issue before. I'll try to be patient until the 7th.

just called my county office and they said there was a statewide EBT system update that affected the pending notices but benefits should still post on regular schedule!!

Thanks for sharing this information! This confirms what I suspected about the system update affecting pending deposits but not actual benefit issuance. It's always good to get confirmation directly from the county.

Thank you so much for calling and sharing this update! That's a huge relief to hear. I'll still check on the 7th, but I'm feeling much better now.

my sister works for the county and she told me they were doing updates to the calfresh system this week so maybe thats why none of us can see pending benefits this month lol but don worry it should still come

UPDATE: My benefits just appeared as pending this morning (Dec 31)! Looks like it was just delayed by a few days. Thanks everyone for the helpful responses and calming my nerves. Hopefully this helps anyone else experiencing the same issue.

Great news! Thanks for updating the thread. This is helpful information for others who might be experiencing the same concern. System updates often cause temporary display issues like this.
