CalFresh EBT benefits by last name (H) finally deposited in Orange County - timeline update
Does anyone else with last names starting with H finally get their CalFresh benefits loaded today in Orange County? Been checking my EBT card balance every few hours since the 10th (our usual deposit date) and nothing showed up until this afternoon! Called the automated line twice yesterday and was told my account had $0. Nearly had a panic attack thinking there was an issue with my recertification from January. My kids were asking why we couldn't buy groceries 😓 Just got $1,075 loaded about an hour ago. Seems like they're doing some weird alphabetical rollout this month? Anyone know what's going on with these delays? My rent already ate most of my paycheck and we've been stretching leftovers for days.

Yes, this is happening countywide in OC right now. They're using an alphabetical staggered deposit schedule this month due to system updates. According to what my eligibility worker told me last week, they're rolling out 3-4 letters per day to manage server load during the upgrade. The official schedule should be: A-D: 10th-11th E-G: 12th H-J: 13th (that's you, today) K-M: 14th N-R: 15th S-Z: 16th They're supposed to return to the normal issuance schedule next month, but they should have sent notices about this change. Did you get anything in the mail or on your BenefitsCal account?

•Thank you for this info! No, I didn't get ANY notification about this change. Nothing in mail or my BenefitsCal messages. That's why I was panicking. Would've been nice to know instead of wondering if my benefits were canceled!!! My kids were getting worried seeing me stress about groceries. I'll check my mail again but pretty sure nothing came about this.

•Glad you got yours too! So stressful. I was worried they needed more verification documents or something. My SAR7 isn't due until next month so I was totally confused.

This staggered schedule is actually a very temporary measure for May only due to the CalFresh system maintenance and upgrade they're implementing statewide. Orange County seems to be particularly affected because they're one of the first counties transitioning to the new unified benefits platform. I work with a community organization that partners with Social Services and we were told the notification letters went out late - many people won't receive them until after their benefits are already deposited. Not ideal communication at all. Important note: If you have any urgent need before your scheduled alphabet date, you can request an emergency allocation by contacting your eligibility worker directly. They can process same-day emergency benefits for households experiencing hardship due to this delay.

•This is rediculous that thy didn't tell anyone!!! My last name starts with V so I have to wait till the 16th?? Thats a whole week later than normal. I have 3 kids and we're already out of most groceries. How do I even reach a worker? Every time I call I'm on hold forever then get disconnected.

•@user7 I had the same problem trying to reach my worker about expedited benefits. The phone system is overwhelmed right now with everyone calling about the delays. I found a service called Claimyr that helped me actually get through to a real person at CalFresh. It basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when a worker answers. Saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 I was skeptical but it worked perfectly when I needed to update my address last month. Worth it to get those emergency benefits if you need them before the 16th.

Count yourself lucky, I'm a W and apparently have to wait until the 16th!!! This is completely unfair. Why should people at the end of the alphabet have to wait longer? They should have done it the other way around if anything, or just not messed with the system at all. My kids are on reduced school lunch and we depend on our regular deposit date. SO FRUSTRATING.

•I understand your frustration. For households experiencing hardship due to this temporary schedule, you can call your eligibility worker and request emergency benefits. Explain that the delay is causing a food security issue for your children, and they should be able to process a partial or full allocation within 24 hours. The county is required to provide emergency assistance in these situations.

I got mine too (last name Hernandez). I was actually at the grocery store when I got the text alert from BenefitsCal that my benefits had been deposited. Talk about good timing! The cashier was about to start removing items because I thought I only had $45 left on my regular debit card. Did anyone else notice that the deposit amount was slightly higher than usual? I normally get $780 for myself and my two kids, but this month it was $812. Not complaining, just curious if the benefit amounts changed.

•Yes, there was a small cost-of-living adjustment implemented in May 2025. The maximum benefit amounts increased by approximately 4% across all household sizes to account for inflation in food costs. For a household of 3, the maximum went from $780 to $812 exactly, so that explains what you're seeing. Everyone should see this increase regardless of when their benefits are deposited this month.

•Oh that's great news! Every little bit helps with how expensive groceries have gotten. My kids are growing teenagers and eat SO much food. Thanks for explaining!

•Benefits are still rolling out throughout the day for the H-J group. According to the county office, they're processing in batches all day, so some people might not see their benefits until later tonight. If your friend doesn't receive them by tomorrow morning, then she should definitely call her worker. Make sure she's checking both by calling the EBT balance number and checking the BenefitsCal app, as sometimes the app updates before the phone system.

do we think this means the june deposit dates will be back to normal?? i already wrote down all my bills for next month based on the regular schedule

•According to the official announcement from CDSS (California Department of Social Services), this is a one-time adjusted issuance schedule only for May 2025. June benefits should return to the normal staggered issuance dates (1st through 10th of the month based on case number, not alphabet). The system upgrade is scheduled to be completed by May 20th, allowing sufficient time to return to the standard schedule for June benefits.

I just called the Orange County Social Services Agency about this because I was confused too (my last name starts with I). The representative explained that this temporary schedule is part of their transition to a new benefits management system that's supposed to make everything faster in the long run. For anyone experiencing hardship due to the delay, you can apply for expedited benefits by submitting an emergency request through your BenefitsCal account. Click on "Contact My Worker" and select "Emergency Assistance Request" from the dropdown menu. Make sure to explain that the delay is causing immediate food insecurity. They're prioritizing these requests and typically processing them within 24-48 hours.

•Thank you for this info! I wish they had communicated all this better. My neighbor's last name starts with T and she's going to be waiting a while. I'll let her know about the emergency request option.

This is such a relief to read! My last name is Hamilton and I got my benefits around 2 PM today after checking obsessively since the 10th. I was starting to wonder if I had missed some important paperwork or if there was an issue with my case. The lack of communication from the county about this change is really frustrating - I would have been so much less stressed if I had known this was a planned system upgrade rather than thinking something was wrong with my account. At least now I know what to expect and can plan better. Thanks for sharing this timeline breakdown, it's super helpful for everyone else who might be panicking like I was!
