What is weekly certification for unemployment - Washington ESD requirements?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and they keep mentioning 'weekly certification' but I'm honestly confused about what this actually means. Do I have to do something every single week? What happens if I miss it? I've been looking through the SecureAccess Washington portal but it's not super clear to me. Can someone explain this in simple terms?

Weekly certification is basically you telling Washington ESD that you're still unemployed and looking for work. You have to file a weekly claim every week to get paid. It's like checking in with them.

•Oh okay that makes sense. So I have to do this every single week even if nothing has changed with my situation?

Sophia Long
•Yep, every week. Even if you have no work or job contacts to report, you still need to file the weekly claim or you won't get paid for that week.

The weekly certification is where you answer questions about your availability for work, any work you did that week, and your job search activities. You need to complete it by the deadline each week (usually Sunday night) to receive your unemployment payment for that week.

•What kind of questions do they ask? I haven't started working yet so I'm not sure what I'll need to report.

•They'll ask if you were able and available to work, if you worked any hours or earned money, if you refused any job offers, and about your job search contacts. For job search, you typically need 3 contacts per week.

•Wait, 3 job contacts every week? That seems like a lot. Is that really required?

I've been dealing with this weekly certification thing for months and honestly it's such a pain. The system crashes all the time, especially on Sundays when everyone's trying to file. I've missed payments because I couldn't get through.

•Oh no, that sounds frustrating! What happens if you miss the deadline because the system is down?

•You can usually file late but it delays your payment. Sometimes they make exceptions for system issues but you have to call and explain, which is another nightmare because you can never get through to anyone at Washington ESD.

•I had the same problem with getting through to Washington ESD on the phone. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

Do you have to file the weekly certification even if you're on standby status? I'm temporarily laid off but expecting to go back to my job soon.

Angelica Smith
•Yes, you still need to file weekly claims even on standby. The process is similar but you'll indicate that you're on standby and not actively seeking work.

•Good to know, thanks! I was worried I was supposed to be doing job searches even though I'm expecting to go back to my regular job.

make sure you keep track of your job search activities because they can audit you at any time. I got selected for a job search review and had to provide detailed records going back several weeks.

•What kind of records do you need to keep? Just the company names?

Harper Thompson
•company name, contact info, date you applied, method (online, phone, in person), and position you applied for. Washington ESD wants detailed documentation.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim early in the week if possible. Don't wait until Sunday night when everyone else is doing it and the system gets overloaded.

•How early can you file? Like right after the week ends?

Sophia Long
•Usually you can file starting Monday morning for the previous week. Check your account on SecureAccess Washington to see when your next filing period opens.

I missed filing my weekly certification once and it was such a hassle to get it sorted out. They made me call and explain why I missed it, then I had to wait extra time to get that week's payment.

Carter Holmes
•How long did you have to wait for the payment after you called?
0 coins
Caleb Stark
•About 2 weeks longer than usual. They said it had to go through some kind of review process for late filings.

The weekly certification questions are pretty straightforward once you get used to them. Just be honest about everything - if you worked a few hours, report it. If you couldn't look for work because you were sick, report that too.

•What if I work just a few hours one week? Do I still get some unemployment payment?
0 coins
Jade O'Malley
•Yes, you can usually work part-time and still get partial unemployment benefits. Washington ESD calculates how much to reduce your payment based on what you earned.

Another thing about weekly certification - if you start a new job, make sure to report it right away. Don't wait until your next weekly filing. I've heard of people getting overpayment notices because they didn't report work immediately.

Carter Holmes
•Do you report it through the same weekly certification system?
0 coins
Charlotte Jones
•You can report it through your weekly claim, but there's also usually a separate option to report return to work immediately. Check your SecureAccess Washington account for the option.

been filing weekly certifications for 4 months now and it becomes routine. set a reminder on your phone so you don't forget. missing even one week can mess up your whole payment schedule

Carter Holmes
•Good idea about the phone reminder. What day do you usually file yours?

•i do mine every tuesday morning with my coffee. gives me time to think about the previous week and make sure i have all my job search info ready

If you're having trouble with the Washington ESD website or phone system, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me too. I was stuck trying to get clarification about my weekly certification requirements and couldn't reach anyone. Used their service and got through to an agent who explained everything clearly.

•Is it expensive to use? I'm already tight on money while unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their website at claimyr.com to see what works for your situation. For me, the time saved was worth it since I was spending hours trying to get through on my own.

Make sure you understand the difference between 'able and available' vs 'actively seeking work' when you fill out your weekly certification. They're related but different requirements.

Carter Holmes
•What's the difference? I thought they were the same thing.

Andrew Pinnock
•Able and available means you're ready to work if offered a job - not sick, not on vacation, etc. Actively seeking work means you're actually applying for jobs and can prove your job search activities.

does anyone know if you can file your weekly certification on your phone? the website seems designed for computers and it's hard to navigate on mobile

Sophia Long
•You can file on mobile but it's definitely easier on a computer. The mobile version of SecureAccess Washington can be glitchy sometimes.

Brianna Schmidt
•thanks, i'll try to use a computer when possible. don't want to risk messing up my certification because of mobile issues

I wish Washington ESD would send better notifications about when your weekly certification is due. I almost missed mine last week because I forgot what day it was.

Carter Holmes
•Do they send any reminders at all?

Alexis Renard
•They're supposed to send email reminders but I don't always get them. Better to just set your own reminder like others suggested.

The job search requirement for weekly certification caught me off guard at first. Three employer contacts per week adds up fast. Make sure you're keeping good records from day one.
0 coins
Carter Holmes
•Can the contacts be online applications or do some have to be in-person?
0 coins
Camila Jordan
•Online applications definitely count. I think phone calls and in-person visits count too. The important thing is that you're making genuine efforts to find work.

Just want to add that if you're confused about any part of the weekly certification process, it's worth trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask questions. I used Claimyr to help me reach an agent when I had questions about reporting part-time work, and it cleared up my confusion quickly.
0 coins
Carter Holmes
•That seems to be the consensus - that getting through to talk to someone is really helpful but hard to do on your own.
0 coins
Tyler Lefleur
•Exactly. The written instructions aren't always clear for specific situations, so talking to an actual person who knows the rules can save you from making mistakes.

weekly certification is basically your lifeline to continued payments. miss it and you're stuck waiting and explaining. do it wrong and you might get an overpayment notice later. take it seriously from the start

Carter Holmes
•Thanks everyone for all the explanations! This makes much more sense now. I feel more prepared to start filing my weekly certifications.

•You're welcome! Just remember to be consistent and honest with your reporting, and you'll be fine. The process becomes routine after a few weeks.

One more tip - if you travel out of state for any reason, make sure you report that on your weekly certification. Being unavailable for work in Washington can affect your eligibility for that week.
0 coins
Carter Holmes
•Good point! I hadn't thought about travel affecting unemployment benefits.
0 coins
Max Knight
•Yeah, the 'able and available' requirement means you need to be in Washington and available to accept work. Short trips might be okay but longer ones could affect your benefits.

The weekly certification system has definitely improved over the years but it's still not perfect. Just be patient with the technology and make sure you have all your information ready before you start filing.
0 coins
Carter Holmes
•What information should I have ready each week before I start filing?
0 coins
Emma Swift
•Your job search log with employer contacts, any wages earned that week, and answers to whether you were able and available to work each day. Having it organized makes the process much faster.
