How to certify unemployment benefits - Washington ESD weekly claim confusion
I'm totally confused about this whole certification process for my unemployment benefits. Got approved for UI last week but now Washington ESD is asking me to 'certify' every week? What exactly does this mean and how do I do it? I logged into my SecureAccess Washington account but there's like 5 different links and I don't want to mess anything up. Do I need to certify for the week I was unemployed or the current week? And what happens if I miss the deadline? Really stressed about this since I need these benefits to pay rent.

Certifying is basically your weekly check-in to confirm you're still eligible for benefits. You'll need to answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, and if you're able and available. The certification covers the week that just ended, not the current week.

•So if it's Tuesday, I'm certifying for last week Monday-Sunday? That makes more sense, thanks!

•exactly right, and you have to do it every week to keep getting paid

ugh the washington esd website is such a mess!! i spent 30 minutes trying to figure out where to certify last week. its under the 'file weekly claim' section but they should just call it certification to make it clear

•RIGHT?? Why don't they just say 'certify here' instead of all these confusing menu options

•The 'File Weekly Claim' link is the certification process. I know it's confusing but that's the correct place to go each week.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months now and calling them is impossible. If you need to actually talk to someone about certification issues, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

•Is that legit? I'm nervous about using third-party stuff for unemployment

•Yeah it's real, they just help you get connected to Washington ESD agents faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked when I needed help with my adjudication issue.

Here's the step-by-step for certification: 1) Log into SecureAccess Washington 2) Click 'File Weekly Claim' 3) Answer all questions honestly 4) Submit before the Sunday deadline. You'll answer about work performed, job search activities, and availability. Missing certification means no payment for that week.

•What if I worked a few hours during the week? Do I report that?
0 coins
Ravi Patel
•Yes, absolutely report any work hours and earnings. Washington ESD will calculate your partial benefit amount based on what you earned.

•this is important - always report earnings even if its just a few bucks, they will find out anyway

The job search requirement is 3 activities per week minimum. Make sure you're tracking what you did because they ask specific questions about it during certification. Keep records of applications, networking, interviews, etc.

•Wait, I have to do 3 job search things EVERY week? That seems like a lot
0 coins
CosmicCrusader
•Yes, it's required unless you're on standby status. Applications, networking events, job fairs, skills training all count toward the 3 activities.

been certifying for 8 weeks now and its pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. just dont lie about anything because they do audits

•What happens if they audit you?

Malik Jackson
•they can ask for proof of your job search activities and work history, if you cant provide it you might get disqualified

Pro tip: Set a reminder for Sunday evenings to certify. The system gets really slow on Sunday nights because everyone waits until the last minute. I usually do mine Saturday morning to avoid the rush.

•Good idea! What time does the deadline end on Sunday?

LunarLegend
•I believe it's 11:59 PM Pacific Time on Sunday, but don't cut it that close in case there are technical issues.

does anyone know what happens if you miss the deadline? i was sick last week and totally forgot to certify

•You won't get paid for that week, but you can usually call Washington ESD to explain the circumstances. They might allow you to certify late with good cause.

Freya Andersen
•This is exactly when I used Claimyr - needed to explain my late certification to an agent and couldn't get through the regular phone lines. Much easier than spending all day redialing.

the questions are pretty standard each week - did you work, how much did you earn, were you able and available for work, what job search stuff did you do. answer honestly and you'll be fine

•What does 'able and available' actually mean? I had a dentist appointment one day, does that count against me?
0 coins
Omar Zaki
•able and available means you could work if offered a job. a dentist appointment for a few hours wouldnt disqualify you for the whole week

I'm confused about the timing too. When I certify on Monday, am I certifying for the week that just ended or the week before that?
0 coins
Ravi Patel
•You certify for the week that just ended. So if you certify on Monday January 13th, you're certifying for the week of January 6th-12th.

Chloe Robinson
•OK that makes sense, thanks for clarifying!

Make sure you understand the difference between partial and full unemployment too. If you work some hours during the week, you might still qualify for partial benefits depending on how much you earned.

Emma Davis
•How do they calculate partial benefits? I might pick up some gig work
0 coins
CosmicCrusader
•They deduct your earnings from your weekly benefit amount, but there's usually a small earnings disregard. Check the Washington ESD website for the exact formula.

whatever you do dont skip weeks thinking you can catch up later, each week has to be certified separately and missing one means no payment

•Good to know! I was wondering if I could batch them if I went out of town

For anyone struggling with the Washington ESD phone system, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. When I had questions about my certification process that the website couldn't answer, they got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. Way better than the 2+ hour wait times I was getting before.

•How much does it cost?

•I'd rather pay a reasonable fee than waste entire days trying to get through. It's worth it when you actually need help with your claim.

The Washington ESD system is actually pretty user-friendly once you get used to it. Just remember to keep good records of everything - job applications, work hours, any training you do. They might ask for documentation later.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•What kind of documentation do they usually want?
0 coins
Anastasia Kozlov
•Screenshots of job applications, emails from employers, training certificates, anything that proves you did what you said you did during certification.

been on unemployment 3 times over the years and the certification process hasnt changed much. just be honest and consistent with your answers

Emma Davis
•That's reassuring to hear from someone with experience!

•Same here, consistency is key. Don't change your story from week to week.

One thing that tripped me up was the question about refusing work. Make sure you understand what counts as suitable work for your situation.
0 coins
Emma Davis
•What if someone offers me a job that pays way less than my previous job?
0 coins
Diego Flores
•There are rules about suitable work based on your skills and previous wage. You can't just refuse any job, but you also don't have to take anything that's completely unreasonable.

Does everyone have to do the WorkSource registration thing? That was confusing when I first filed.
0 coins
Ravi Patel
•Yes, most people need to register with WorkSourceWA within a certain timeframe. It's part of the job search requirements.

Zara Mirza
•OK good, I did that already but wasn't sure if it was required or just recommended.

The whole system seems designed to make you give up. Between the certification requirements, job search quotas, and trying to reach someone when you have questions, it's exhausting.

Emma Davis
•I'm definitely feeling overwhelmed by all the requirements

•Just take it one week at a time. The certification becomes routine after a few weeks.

Set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Payments come faster than waiting for the debit card to arrive.

Emma Davis
•How long does direct deposit usually take?
0 coins
Luca Russo
•Usually 1-2 business days after you certify, assuming no issues with your claim.
