Washington ESD weekly claim certification process - how to certify unemployment properly
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and need to start certifying my weekly claims but I'm honestly confused about the whole process. The Washington ESD website mentions something about certifying but I can't find clear step-by-step instructions. Do I need to log into my SecureAccess Washington account every week? What information do I need to have ready? I'm worried about messing something up and losing my benefits. Has anyone recently gone through the certification process who can walk me through it?

You'll need to log into your SAW account every week to certify. The system opens up Sunday morning and you have until the following Saturday to complete it. You'll need to answer questions about any work you did, money you earned, and whether you were able and available for work that week.

•Thanks! So I can do it any day between Sunday and Saturday? I don't have to wait for a specific day?

•Exactly! Most people do it Sunday or Monday but you have the whole week. Just don't forget or you'll miss that week's payment.

Make sure you have your work search activities logged before you certify. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to be ready to report them during certification.

•Wait, I need to do 3 job searches every single week? Even if I just got laid off last week?

•Yes, the job search requirement starts immediately unless you're on standby status. Keep detailed records of where you applied, when, and what type of position.

•This is exactly why I had trouble with my claims at first. I didn't know about the job search requirement and got disqualified for two weeks.

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly their phone system is terrible when you need help with certification issues. Last time I had a problem I couldn't get through to anyone for days. Then I found out about claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•I'm not sure about the cost but it was worth it for me. The video explains everything and it's way easier than sitting on hold for hours.

•I used Claimyr too when my certification got stuck in pending status. They got me through to someone at Washington ESD who fixed it in 10 minutes.

The certification questions are pretty straightforward. They ask if you worked, how much you earned, if you were able and available for work, and if you looked for work. Just answer honestly and you'll be fine.

•What if I worked a few hours but didn't earn much? Do I still report it?

•Yes, report ALL work and earnings even if it's just a few dollars. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount accordingly but you won't get in trouble for working part-time.

•You can usually reopen a missed week by calling Washington ESD. They're pretty understanding about first-time mistakes.

Pro tip: Log into your account on Sunday mornings around 8 AM. The system is usually less busy then and you can get your certification done quickly. I always do mine first thing Sunday with my coffee.

•Good advice! I'm definitely going to set a Sunday reminder on my phone.

Make sure your job search activities are legitimate. Washington ESD can audit your work search log and if they find fake entries you could get disqualified. I always apply to real jobs and keep screenshots of my applications.

•That's scary. How detailed do the job search records need to be?

•Include company name, position applied for, date, and method of application. Some people also save job posting links or confirmation emails.

•I keep everything in a spreadsheet. Makes it easy to reference during certification.

What happens if you certify late? I'm traveling next week and might not be able to do it on Sunday.

Keisha Jackson
•You have until Saturday to certify for that week. As long as you do it before the deadline you're fine.

•Perfect, I'll make sure to do it before my flight on Friday. Thanks!

Does anyone know if you can certify from your phone? The Washington ESD website is kind of hard to navigate on mobile.

•Yes, you can certify on your phone through the SecureAccess Washington mobile site. It's not the prettiest but it works.

I've been certifying for 6 months now and it becomes second nature after a few weeks. The key is being consistent and honest with your answers.

•That's reassuring. I'm nervous about making mistakes but it sounds like it gets easier.

Omar Zaki
•Definitely gets easier! Just take your time the first few weeks and read each question carefully.

IMPORTANT: If you're on standby status with your employer, the certification process is different. You don't need to do job searches but you still need to certify weekly.

•I'm not on standby, but good to know. How do you know if you're on standby status?
0 coins
Chloe Taylor
•Your employer has to request standby status and Washington ESD has to approve it. You'd know if you were on standby.

Remember to report any vacation pay, severance, or pension payments during certification. These can affect your benefits even if you're not currently working.

•I got a small severance payment when I was laid off. Do I report that every week or just the week I received it?
0 coins
Diego Flores
•Usually just the week you received it, but check with Washington ESD to be sure. Different types of payments are handled differently.

The certification system sometimes has technical glitches on Sunday mornings. If you can't log in, try again later in the day or on Monday.

•Good to know! I would probably panic if I couldn't log in on Sunday.

Anastasia Ivanova
•Don't panic! The system is usually back up within a few hours. You have all week to complete it.

If you have problems with certification that you can't resolve online, calling Washington ESD is your best bet. Though like someone mentioned earlier, their phone system is frustrating. I've heard good things about that Claimyr service for getting through to them faster.

•I'm going to bookmark that Claimyr site just in case I run into problems.

•Smart idea. Better to have it ready than spend hours on hold when you're stressed about a certification issue.

One more tip: Print or screenshot your certification confirmation each week. It's proof you submitted it on time if there's ever a question about your claim.

•Great advice! I'll start doing that from my first certification.

•It's saved me from having to prove I certified on time more than once. Always good to have documentation.
