How to file weekly certification for unemployment - Washington ESD process help
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and need to file my first weekly certification but I'm completely lost on how to do this. The Washington ESD website mentions weekly claims but I can't find where to actually submit them. Do I need to do this every week? What information do I need to have ready? I'm worried about messing something up and losing my benefits. Can someone walk me through the process?

You'll need to log into your eServices account on the Washington ESD website every week to file your weekly claim. It's usually available on Sunday and you have until the following Saturday to submit it. You'll need to report any work you did, wages earned, and confirm you're still looking for work.

•Thanks! Do I need to wait for them to tell me when to start filing or should I just check every Sunday?

•You should receive instructions after your claim is approved, but generally you can start filing the Sunday after your waiting week is served.

The weekly certification asks pretty standard questions - did you work, how much did you earn, did you look for work, are you able and available. Make sure you answer honestly about any work or income because they cross-check with employers.

•What counts as looking for work? I've been applying online but haven't heard back from anyone yet.

•Online applications definitely count. Keep track of where you applied and when - Washington ESD might ask for your job search log during an audit.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my weekly claims. Kept getting busy signals and getting hung up on. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•That's interesting - did they charge you to make the call?

•They handle the calling part for you so you don't have to sit on hold. Worth it when you need answers about your claim status or weekly certification issues.

•I might try that if I can't get through. The phone system is impossible.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE EVERY WEEK even if you worked or earned money. A lot of people think they shouldn't file if they worked but that's wrong - you still need to report it. Missing a week can cause your claim to go inactive.

•Good to know! What happens if I accidentally miss a week?

Ryder Ross
•You can usually file for a missed week as long as it's within the time limit, but it might cause delays in your payments. Better to just file every week on time.

•Is there a specific time on Saturday it's due?

•I believe it's 11:59 PM on Saturday, but don't wait until the last minute in case there are system issues.

I've been filing weekly claims for 3 months now and it becomes routine. The system saves your previous answers so if nothing changed from last week, it goes pretty fast. Usually takes me 2-3 minutes max.

•That's reassuring - I was worried it would be complicated every time.

•Nope, once you do it a few times it's automatic. Just be consistent with your job search efforts.

Make sure you understand the difference between gross and net pay when reporting earnings. They want gross pay (before taxes). I made that mistake my first week and had to call to correct it.

•Thanks for the tip! Do they reduce my benefit amount if I work part-time?

Olivia Kay
•Yes, they use a formula to calculate partial benefits. You can usually still get some unemployment as long as you don't earn more than your weekly benefit amount plus $5.

Been doing this for years unfortunately and the Washington ESD system is pretty straightforward for weekly claims. Just don't lie about anything because they WILL find out and you'll have to pay back benefits plus penalties.

•What kind of things do they check up on?

Joshua Hellan
•They cross-reference with employer wage reports, tax records, and sometimes audit job search activities. Honesty is always the best policy.

I had issues with my weekly claim getting stuck in processing for weeks. Turns out there was an issue with my identity verification. Had to use that Claimyr service someone mentioned to finally get through to an agent who could explain what was happening.

•How long did the identity verification take to resolve?

Jibriel Kohn
•About 2 weeks once I got the right documents submitted. The agent was helpful in explaining exactly what they needed.

Pro tip: if you're going to be out of town or unable to file on your usual day, you can file early in the week. Don't wait until Saturday if you know you won't be available.

•Good advice! Can I file as early as Sunday?

Edison Estevez
•Usually yes, the system opens it up on Sunday morning. Some people like to get it done early in the week.

The job search requirement is 3 work search activities per week in Washington. Keep detailed records because they do audit these. Online applications, networking events, job fairs all count.

•Do I need to provide proof when I file the weekly claim?

Emily Nguyen-Smith
•Not every week, but you need to keep records in case they ask. I use a simple spreadsheet with dates, company names, and position titles.

washington esd website crashes sometimes on sundays because everyone tries to file at once. i usually wait until monday or tuesday to avoid the rush

•That's smart - I'll keep that in mind for busy weeks.

Watch out for the question about attending school or training. If you're taking classes, make sure you understand how that affects your benefits. Some training programs are approved, others might make you ineligible.

Finley Garrett
•I wasn't planning on taking classes but good to know for the future.

Sophia Rodriguez
•Yeah, just something to be aware of. They have specific rules about education and training while collecting benefits.

If you move to a different state while collecting Washington benefits, you need to report that immediately. It can get complicated with interstate claims.

Finley Garrett
•Not planning to move but that's important information to have.

The system will show you a confirmation number after you submit your weekly claim. I always screenshot that just in case there are any issues later.

Finley Garrett
•Great idea! Better safe than sorry when it comes to documentation.

Emma Bianchi
•Exactly. Having that confirmation number has saved me a couple times when there were processing delays.

My cousin had her claim suspended because she missed filing for 3 weeks in a row. Had to reopen her claim and it took forever. Don't make that mistake!

Finley Garrett
•Wow, that sounds like a nightmare. I'll definitely make sure to file every week.

Lucas Kowalski
•Yeah it was a mess. She had to prove she was still eligible and everything. Just file every week even if you think you don't need to.

If you have any issues with your weekly claim, like error messages or technical problems, document everything. Screenshots, error codes, timestamps. Makes it easier when you have to call for help.

Finley Garrett
•That's really practical advice. I hope I don't run into technical issues but I'll be prepared.

Olivia Martinez
•The system isn't perfect so it's good to be prepared. Most weeks go smoothly but when there are problems, documentation helps.

Been through this process multiple times over the years. The weekly certification is really straightforward once you get used to it. Just be honest, file on time, and keep good records. You'll be fine!

One last thing - if you ever get an overpayment notice, don't panic. Sometimes it's just a mistake in the system. I had to use Claimyr again to get through and get it resolved when the automated system flagged something incorrectly.

•Good to know there are options if problems come up. Hopefully I won't need to deal with that.

•Hopefully not, but it's good to know your options. The phone service really helps when you need to talk to an actual person at Washington ESD.
