How to certify for unemployment benefits Washington ESD weekly claims process
I just got approved for unemployment after waiting forever for adjudication and now I'm confused about the weekly certification thing. The Washington ESD website mentions I need to certify but I'm not sure what that actually means or how often I need to do it. Do I have to report every single job I applied for? What happens if I miss a week? I really don't want to mess this up after waiting so long to get approved.

Weekly certification is basically your way of telling Washington ESD you're still eligible for benefits that week. You have to do it every Sunday for the previous week. You'll report any work you did, wages earned, and confirm you were able and available for work.

•So I do this every Sunday? What if I forget one week?

•You can usually file late but you might have to explain the delay. Don't make it a habit though.

You also need to log your job search activities. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby with your employer.

•What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs or other stuff too?

Jean Claude
•Applying for jobs, networking events, career fairs, even some types of training. Keep detailed records with dates and employer names.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my certification questions but their phone lines are impossible. Anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•Have you tried Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I used it last month when I was stuck on a certification issue. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that. Is it legit?

•Yeah, it actually got me connected within an hour instead of calling for days. Way better than sitting on hold forever.

Make sure you're honest about any work you do, even just a few hours. If you don't report it and they find out later, you could get hit with an overpayment.

•What if I do some gig work like DoorDash? Do I have to report that too?

Quinn Herbert
•Yes, any income needs to be reported. Even if it's just $20 from a gig, report it.

the whole system is ridiculous, why do we have to jump through so many hoops just to get benefits we paid into???

Chris Elmeda
•I get the frustration but the requirements are there to prevent fraud and make sure benefits go to people who are actively looking for work.

•still annoying when you're just trying to survive between jobs

Quick tip - set a phone alarm for Sunday mornings to remind yourself to certify. I missed two weeks in a row because I forgot and it was a pain to fix.

•Good idea! What time on Sunday do they usually open the system?

Hazel Garcia
•I think it's available all day Sunday but I usually do it in the morning to get it over with.

Does anyone know if you can certify on the mobile app or do you have to use the full website? The mobile site is terrible.

Jean Claude
•The full website is definitely better. The mobile version has issues and sometimes doesn't save your information properly.

•Ugh that explains why I had problems last week. Thanks!

I'm on standby with my employer. Do I still need to do job search activities?

Chris Elmeda
•If you're on approved standby status, you typically don't need to search for work, but you still need to certify weekly and be available if your employer calls you back.

•Thanks, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure.

What happens if you accidentally put the wrong information when certifying? I think I messed up my hours worked last week.

•You should contact Washington ESD to correct it ASAP. It's better to fix it now than have them discover the error later during an audit.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr to get through to them quickly. Way easier than trying to call normally.

The job search log is such a pain. I wish they'd just trust us to look for work without all the documentation.

Jean Claude
•I know it's annoying but keep good records. If they ever audit your claim, you'll need to show proof of your job search activities.

•Fair point. Better safe than sorry I guess.

I got confused about available and able to work - what's the difference?
0 coins
Chris Elmeda
•Able means you're physically and mentally capable of working. Available means you're not doing other things that would prevent you from accepting work if offered.

•So if I have a doctor's appointment, does that make me unavailable?
0 coins
Chris Elmeda
•Not necessarily. You can still be available for work even with appointments, as long as you could reschedule if a job offer came up.

Pro tip: screenshot your certification each week after you submit it. Sometimes the system glitches and it helps to have proof you filed on time.

•Smart! I'll start doing that.

This whole thread has been super helpful. I was so confused about the certification process but now I feel like I understand it better.

One more question - if I start a part-time job, can I still collect some unemployment?
0 coins
Quinn Herbert
•Yes, but your benefits will be reduced based on how much you earn. There's a formula Washington ESD uses to calculate partial benefits.

Myles Regis
•Good to know. I might take a part-time position while I keep looking for full-time work.

Does the certification deadline ever change or is it always Sunday?
0 coins
Hazel Garcia
•It's always Sunday for the previous week, but holidays might affect when the system is available. Check the Washington ESD website for any announcements.

I heard some people got in trouble for not keeping detailed enough job search records. How detailed do they need to be?

Jean Claude
•Include company name, position applied for, date, method (online, in person, etc.), and contact information if you have it. The more detail the better.

•This is another thing I wanted to ask Washington ESD about but couldn't get through. Maybe I'll try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

This certification stuff seems overwhelming at first but it becomes routine pretty quickly. Just stick with it and don't overthink it.

Annabel Kimball
•Thanks for the encouragement! I'm definitely overthinking everything right now.

•That's totally normal when you're new to the system. You'll get the hang of it!

Final reminder - always double-check your certification before submitting. It's way easier to fix mistakes before you hit submit than after.

•Great advice. I'll make sure to review everything carefully.

•And if you do need to make corrections after submitting, Claimyr can help you get through to Washington ESD agents faster than regular calling. Really saved me time when I had certification issues.
