How often do you certify for unemployment with Washington ESD weekly claims?

I just got approved for unemployment benefits after being laid off from my warehouse job last month. Washington ESD sent me info about filing weekly claims but I'm confused about the timing. Do I need to certify every single week or is it bi-weekly? And what happens if I miss a week - do I lose my benefits permanently? I'm stressed about messing this up since I really need these payments to cover rent.

You have to file your weekly claim every week, typically on Sunday for the previous week. So if you were unemployed Monday-Sunday, you'd file that claim the following Sunday. Don't skip weeks or you'll lose those benefit payments.

Okay so it's literally every week then? I thought maybe it was every two weeks like some other states do.

Yep, Washington ESD requires weekly certification. You have until Saturday night to file for the previous week, but I always do it Sunday mornings to stay on schedule.

make sure you answer all the questions honestly about any work you did that week, even if its just a few hours. they will find out if you dont report it and then you'll have an overpayment issue

What if I do some gig work like DoorDash? Do I have to report that too even if it's just like $50?

0 coins

yes report ALL income, even $10. washington esd will reduce your weekly benefit amount but you can still get partial benefits usually

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly the weekly claims are the easy part. It's getting through to them when you have issues that's impossible. I must have called 200 times trying to resolve an adjudication issue.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I found them when I was having the same problem - couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter what. They have this service where they'll call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com, there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

It's legit, I used it twice. They basically handle all the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

To answer your original question - you must file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. The system is set up so that each week you're certifying that you were unemployed and available for work during that specific 7-day period. If you skip a week, you forfeit that week's payment and there's no way to go back and claim it later.

That's what I was worried about. So if I go on vacation for a week, I still need to file but I wouldn't get paid for that week since I wasn't available for work?

Kaitlyn Otto

•

Correct. You'd still file the weekly claim but answer 'no' to being available for work. You won't get benefits for that week but you maintain your claim status.

Wait, I thought you could get benefits while on vacation if you were still looking for work?

No, you have to be available to accept work immediately. If you're out of state or unavailable, you don't qualify for that week's benefits.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO TRIP YOU UP! They make it confusing on purpose so people miss weeks and lose money. I've seen so many people get screwed over by not understanding the weekly filing requirements.

Honestly yeah, it's not very user-friendly. I almost missed my first week because I didn't realize you had to wait until Sunday to file for the previous week.

0 coins

EXACTLY! And then when you call to ask questions you can't get through to anyone. It's like they want you to fail.

just set a reminder on your phone for every sunday morning. i do mine at 8am with my coffee, takes like 3 minutes unless you worked that week

Jace Caspullo

Good idea about the reminder. How long does it usually take to get the payment after you file?

0 coins

usually 2-3 business days if you have direct deposit set up. longer if they mail you a check

I remember when I first started filing weekly claims, I was so paranoid about missing a week that I would check the website multiple times to make sure it went through. The confirmation emails helped a lot with that anxiety.

There are confirmation emails? I haven't gotten any yet, should I be worried?

You should get one after each weekly claim submission. Check your spam folder, sometimes they end up there.

Also make sure you keep track of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and you might get audited to prove it.

•

What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online or do I need to call companies too?

0 coins

Melody Miles

•

Online applications count, but you need to keep detailed records - company name, position, date, how you applied. I keep a spreadsheet with everything.

I just write everything down in a notebook. Had to provide my job search log once and they accepted it.

Been on unemployment twice in the past five years and honestly once you get the routine down it's pretty straightforward. Just file every week, report any income, keep looking for work. The hardest part is when something goes wrong and you need to talk to someone.

That's when services like Claimyr come in handy. I used them when my claim got stuck in adjudication for no reason. Saved me weeks of trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

Yeah I've heard good things about that service. Wish I'd known about it during my first unemployment claim when I was calling Washington ESD for hours every day.

Does anyone know what happens if you file late? Like if you miss the Saturday deadline?

0 coins

Kaitlyn Otto

•

You lose that week's benefits. The system locks you out after Saturday night and there's no way to file for previous weeks retroactively.

Wow that's harsh. Good thing I asked before I found out the hard way.

lol i filed late once by accident and panicked thinking i lost my whole claim. turns out you just lose that one week but your claim stays active. still sucked losing $400 though

Okay that makes me feel better, I was worried one mistake would end everything.

Miguel Harvey

nah your claim stays open as long as you dont miss too many weeks in a row. but still, just set that reminder!

The weekly filing thing stressed me out so much at first because I was used to getting paid bi-weekly at my old job. But it's actually better this way because you get money coming in more frequently.

That's a good way to think about it. I was comparing it to my old paycheck schedule too.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble with the Washington ESD website on Sunday mornings, try filing later in the day. Sometimes it gets overloaded with everyone trying to file at once.

Or try Saturday evening - I've never had issues filing on Saturday nights.

Good point, I always forget you can file Saturday too.

I work part-time now and still file weekly claims for partial benefits. Even if you work 20 hours that week, you might still qualify for some unemployment money depending on how much you earned.

0 coins

Jace Caspullo

•

Really? I thought any work would disqualify you completely.

0 coins

Ella Cofer

•

Nope! Washington ESD has a formula where they reduce your benefits based on your earnings, but you can still get partial payments. It's actually encouraged because it helps you transition back to full-time work.

Just want to echo what others have said - set up that Sunday reminder and stick to it religiously. I've been filing for 8 weeks now and it's become second nature. Don't overthink it!

Thanks everyone, this has been super helpful. I feel way less anxious about the whole process now.
