Do you have to file Washington ESD unemployment claims every week?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after being laid off from my retail job last month. I'm confused about the weekly filing requirements - do I literally have to submit something to Washington ESD every single week to keep getting payments? What happens if I miss a week or file late? The paperwork they sent me wasn't super clear about the timing.

Yes, you have to file a weekly claim every week to continue receiving benefits. You can't skip weeks and then file multiple weeks at once. The system won't let you backdate more than one week typically.

•So if I'm on vacation for a week and forget to file, I just lose that week's payment?

•Pretty much, yeah. You might be able to get it restored if you have a really good reason, but it's a hassle. Better to just set a phone reminder.

The weekly claims are due by 11:59 PM on Saturday each week. You're filing for the week that just ended (Sunday through Saturday). If you miss the deadline, that week is usually lost.

•Wait, so I file on Saturday for the week that just ended? I thought you filed on Sunday for the upcoming week.

•No, you file for the week that already happened. So if you worked Monday-Wednesday and were unemployed Thursday-Saturday, you'd report those 3 days of work when you file.

I've been doing this for months now and honestly the hardest part is just remembering to do it every week. The actual filing takes like 2 minutes if you didn't work. When I was having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about some issues with my claim, I used Claimyr to help me reach an agent. They have this service at claimyr.com that gets you through to ESD reps without waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ if you want to see how it works.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for two weeks about a question on my claim and can never get through.

•Yeah it worked for me. I was getting hung up on after waiting an hour every time I called. With Claimyr I got connected to an actual person within 20 minutes.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already struggling financially.

The weekly filing requirement is non-negotiable. Even if you know you're going back to work next week, you still have to file for any week you were unemployed. Miss a week = lose that week's benefits permanently in most cases.

•This is so stressful. What if there's a technical problem with the website when I try to file?

•The website does crash sometimes, especially on busy days. If that happens, try filing early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are online.

I made the mistake of not filing for 3 weeks when I first got approved because I thought they would just automatically send me money. Had to start the whole process over again and lost those weeks entirely.

•Oh no! Did you try to appeal that or get those weeks back somehow?

•I tried but Washington ESD said it was my responsibility to know the filing requirements. Expensive lesson learned.

•That's brutal. The system really doesn't give you much room for error.

Pro tip: you can file your weekly claim starting Sunday morning for the week that just ended. Don't wait until Saturday night - the system gets overloaded and crashes sometimes.

•Good point. I always file mine on Sunday morning with my coffee. Makes it routine.

•Thanks for the tip! I was planning to wait until Saturday each week.

ugh the weekly filing thing is such a pain. Like they dont trust us or something. If Im unemployed why do I have to prove it every single week??

•It's to make sure you're still actively looking for work and haven't found a job. Also to report any part-time work you might have done.

•I guess that makes sense but its still annoying when you know you didnt work at all

The job search requirements are part of the weekly filing too. You have to log your job search activities each week when you file your claim. Keep track of where you applied, company names, contact info, etc.

•How many jobs do you have to apply to each week? I keep hearing different numbers.

Ava Rodriguez
•It's 3 job search activities per week for most people. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, etc. Not just applications.

Dylan Wright
•Do they actually check that you did those job searches or is it just honor system?

Ava Rodriguez
•They can audit you anytime, so keep good records. Some people get selected for review and have to provide proof of all their job search activities.

Another thing to remember - if you work ANY hours during a week, even just one day, you still have to file that week and report the work. Your benefit amount gets reduced but you might still get some payment.

•What if I work like 10 hours at a temp job? Do I still get any unemployment that week?

Yara Haddad
•Depends on how much you earn. There's a formula but generally you can earn up to a certain amount before your weekly benefit gets reduced to zero.

Set up reminders on your phone! I have mine set for Sunday mornings. 'File unemployment claim' pops up every week at 9 AM.

•Smart idea. I'm definitely doing this after reading about people who forgot and lost weeks.

•Good suggestion, I'm setting one up right now.

If you're ever unsure about whether to file a particular week, just file it. It's better to file and potentially get $0 than to skip filing and lose benefits you were entitled to.

•what if you file wrong though? like report the wrong information by accident?

•You can usually correct minor errors, but it's better to be careful the first time. Double-check your work and earnings info before submitting.

The weekly requirement is actually pretty standard across most states. It's not just Washington being difficult - unemployment systems everywhere work this way to prevent fraud and ensure people are actively seeking work.

•Makes sense from their perspective I guess, even though it's inconvenient for us.

•still feels like they're treating us like criminals when we already lost our jobs

One more thing - if you're going to be out of town or unable to access the internet, you can sometimes file by phone. But the phone system is usually even more frustrating than the website.

•Is there a number to call for filing weekly claims?

NebulaKnight
•Yes, but honestly I'd recommend using Claimyr if you need to reach Washington ESD by phone for any reason. The regular phone lines are impossible to get through on.

•I tried calling Washington ESD for weeks about an adjudication issue and never got through until I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Totally worth it when you actually need to talk to a human.

just remember that every week you don't file is money you're leaving on the table. These benefits are there to help you while you're between jobs - use them!

•True, I worked for years paying into this system so I shouldn't feel bad about using it when I need it.

QuantumQuest
•Exactly! You earned these benefits through your previous work.

Bottom line: File every single week, on time, with accurate information. Set reminders, keep records of your job search activities, and report any work or income honestly. It becomes routine after a few weeks.

•Good luck! And remember if you run into any issues with Washington ESD that require talking to an agent, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can save you hours of frustration trying to get through on the phone.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need to call but it's good to know there's an option if I do.
