What happens if I miss my unemployment phone interview - Washington ESD consequences?
I have a fact-finding interview scheduled with Washington ESD tomorrow at 2pm and I just realized I might not be able to take the call because of a work conflict. This is about my adjudication that's been pending for weeks. What exactly happens if I miss this phone interview? Will my claim automatically get denied or do I get another chance? I'm really stressed about this whole situation.

You need to call Washington ESD ASAP to reschedule. Missing the interview will likely result in your claim being denied for failing to participate in the adjudication process. They usually send a determination letter explaining the denial reason. You can appeal but it's much easier to just reschedule now.

•I've been trying to call all morning but keep getting the busy signal. How am I supposed to reach them when their phones are always jammed?

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. That's usually the best time to get through to someone.

same thing almost happened to me last month - I was able to reschedule by calling the number on the interview notice. took like 30 tries but eventually got through

•Did they give you a hard time about rescheduling or were they understanding?

•the agent was pretty understanding actually, just had to explain why I couldn't make the original time

If you miss the interview, Washington ESD will make a determination based on the information they have available. This usually means a denial since they couldn't get your side of the story. The good news is you have 30 days from the determination date to file an appeal. But seriously, try everything you can to reschedule first.

•What if I can't get through to reschedule before the interview time? Should I just call at the appointment time and explain?

•Yes, definitely call at the scheduled time if you can't reschedule beforehand. They might be able to conduct the interview then or at least document that you tried to participate.

I discovered Claimyr after struggling with this exact same situation. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without the endless busy signals. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you're having trouble reaching them.

•Never heard of this before. Is it legit or just another scam?

•It's legitimate - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. I used it when I couldn't get through for my own adjudication issue and it worked great.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already strapped for cash waiting for my claim to get approved.

The Washington ESD system is SO BROKEN! Why do they schedule these interviews when their phones don't even work properly? I've been trying to reach them for WEEKS about my claim and it's impossible. They set people up to fail on purpose.

•I feel your frustration but getting angry won't help the situation. The system is definitely overwhelmed but there are ways to get through.

•Easy for you to say when you're not facing eviction because your claim has been stuck in adjudication for 2 months!

This happened to my cousin and she got denied initially. Had to file an appeal and wait another month for a hearing. The appeal process is a pain but she eventually got approved. Document everything - times you tried to call, reasons for the conflict, etc.

•How long did the whole appeal process take? I can't afford to wait months for this to get resolved.

•took about 6 weeks total from filing the appeal to getting the hearing decision. not fun but better than losing the claim entirely

Another option is to check if your adjudication letter mentioned any alternative ways to provide information. Sometimes they'll accept written statements or documentation instead of a phone interview, especially if it's a simple work separation issue.

•I'll double-check my letter. The issue is about whether I was terminated or quit voluntarily. My employer is claiming I quit but I was actually fired.

•Definitely try to get documentation of the termination - termination letter, emails, witness statements. That kind of evidence can be very helpful.

just show up to the call even if you're at work. better to take a quick bathroom break than lose your whole claim

•The problem is I work in retail and can't just disappear for 30 minutes during my shift. My manager would not be happy.

•Talk to your manager and explain the situation. Most employers understand that unemployment stuff is important and time-sensitive.

I had a similar issue last year and used one of those callback services. It was a lifesaver because I didn't have to sit on hold for hours. The agent was able to reschedule my interview no problem once I actually got through to someone.

•Was this the Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier? How does it actually work?

QuantumQuest
•Yeah, you give them your info and they call Washington ESD for you. When they get an agent on the line, they conference you in. Saves you from sitting on hold all day.

Whatever you do, don't just ignore it and hope it goes away. I made that mistake and it took months to sort out the mess. Even if you think you might miss it, at least try to call at the scheduled time.

•Yeah I definitely won't ignore it. This claim means too much to me financially to just let it go.

Check your eServices account too. Sometimes they'll send messages about rescheduling through the secure messaging system even if you can't get through by phone.

•Good tip! I'll log in and see if there are any messages I missed.

•The messaging system is usually faster than phone calls for non-urgent stuff, but for interview rescheduling you probably still need to call.

If all else fails and you miss the interview, the denial letter will include instructions for filing an appeal. You have 30 days from the mail date to appeal. The appeal hearing is usually more thorough than the initial interview anyway.

Dylan Campbell
•Is the appeal hearing also done by phone or do I have to go somewhere in person?

Natasha Petrova
•Most appeal hearings are still done by phone. You'll get a notice with the date, time, and phone number to call.

honestly the phone system is such a joke. I spent 4 hours on hold last week just to ask a simple question about my weekly claim

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist. People are desperate to get through to actual humans at Washington ESD.

•might have to look into that if I have more issues. this whole process is exhausting

One more thing - if you do miss the interview and get denied, make sure to keep filing your weekly claims while you appeal. If you win the appeal, you'll get backpay for all those weeks.

Dylan Campbell
•Wait, I should keep filing even if I get denied? I thought you had to stop filing once you're denied.

GalaxyGlider
•Nope, keep filing. It preserves your right to those weeks if your appeal is successful. Just make sure you're still meeting all the requirements like job searching.

UPDATE: I was able to reschedule! Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. The agent was really helpful and moved my interview to next week. Thanks everyone for the advice!
