I heard that if you quit your job you can't get unemployment benefits. Is that true or are there exceptions?
Last thing to remember - unemployment benefits are temporary and designed to help while you look for new work. Don't rely on them as a long-term solution. The sooner you find new employment, the better off you'll be financially.
One more thing - make sure you understand the difference between your benefit year ending and exhausting your weeks. Those are two different scenarios with different rules for reapplying.
Bottom line - start planning now for what happens after your benefits end. Don't wait until week 25 to figure out your next move. The job market moves slow and Washington ESD doesn't give extensions unless there's a major crisis.
Final tip - set up a separate business account just for employment taxes. Transfer the money there each payroll so you're never scrambling to find the funds when payments are due.
Last piece of advice - once you start receiving benefits, don't spend it all at once. Remember you'll need to pay taxes on unemployment income and it might affect your tax refund next year. Consider setting aside a portion for taxes.
The whole process can seem overwhelming at first but you'll get through it. Just take it one step at a time and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Good luck with your application!

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD about their claims, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. It's at claimyr.com and they have that demo video I mentioned before. Really takes the frustration out of trying to reach someone when you have questions.

•Finally checked out that service and it actually worked! Got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day.

•Glad it helped! That's exactly what happened to me. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get answers.

Update: I filed my claim online tonight and it went through without any issues. Now I wait to see if they approve it. Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement!

•Keep us posted on how it goes! And don't panic if it takes a few weeks to hear back.

•Make sure you file your weekly claims even while waiting for approval. You can't go back and claim those weeks later.
