What does an unemployment approval letter look like from Washington ESD?
I've been waiting for weeks to hear back about my UI claim and I'm starting to wonder if I missed something in the mail. I keep checking my online account but the status just says 'processed' now instead of 'pending'. Does Washington ESD send an actual approval letter or is it just updated online? What should I be looking for? I'm worried I might have thrown away something important by mistake.

Yes they definitely send a physical letter! It's usually a white envelope with the Washington State seal and says 'Employment Security Department' on it. The letter itself has your claim details and weekly benefit amount.

•Thank you! I'll check my mail more carefully. Do you remember how long it took to arrive after your online status changed?

•I think it was about 3-4 days after I saw the status change online. Sometimes mail is just slow.

The approval letter is called a 'Monetary Determination' and it shows your weekly benefit amount, maximum benefit amount, and the quarters of wages they used to calculate it. You'll also get a separate letter explaining your job search requirements.

•Oh that's helpful! So there are actually two different letters I should expect?

Anastasia Fedorov
•Correct - the monetary determination first, then the job search requirements letter. Both are important to keep for your records.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your approval status, I had luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me get through when I couldn't reach anyone after trying for days.

•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that service before. Is it free to use?

•They help you get through to Washington ESD agents without the endless busy signals. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your claim status.

Make sure you also check your secure messages in your Washington ESD online account. Sometimes they post important documents there too even if they mail them.

•Good point! I haven't checked my secure messages in a while. I'll log in and see if there's anything there.

•Yeah always check both places. I almost missed an important adjudication notice because I was only looking at my mail.

The approval letter will have your weekly benefit amount prominently displayed. Mine was $487 per week with a maximum of $12,662 total. It also shows your base year earnings and which employers reported wages for you.

•That's really helpful to know what to expect! Did they break down how they calculated your weekly amount?

•Yes, it shows your highest quarter wages and explains the calculation. It's actually pretty detailed once you get it.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! I get so much junk mail I might have missed it.

•Same here, I always check anything from the state now just in case. Too important to miss!

One thing to watch for - if there were any issues with your claim, you might get a different letter first asking for more information or scheduling a fact-finding interview. The approval letter only comes after everything is cleared up.

•My online account doesn't show any issues pending. Does that mean I should just get the approval letter directly?

•If your account shows 'processed' and no pending issues, you should get the monetary determination letter soon. Sometimes it just takes a few extra days.

I've been approved for unemployment before and the letter is pretty straightforward. It has your social security number, claim effective date, weekly benefit amount, and total potential benefits. Also explains when you can start filing weekly claims.

Diego Vargas
•Perfect! So it will tell me when I can start filing my weekly claims too? That's what I really need to know.

Ethan Taylor
•Yes, it shows your 'week ending' dates for when you can start filing. Usually you can file for the first week right away.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible. I called 67 times yesterday and got hung up on every single time. Someone mentioned Claimyr earlier - has anyone actually tried it? I'm desperate to talk to a real person about my claim.

•I used Claimyr about two weeks ago and it worked great. Got connected to an agent in about 10 minutes instead of calling all day. Definitely worth trying if you're having phone issues.

•I was skeptical at first but tried Claimyr last month when I couldn't get through. It actually worked and I was able to get my adjudication issue resolved. The agent was really helpful.

Check your mailbox every day! I was checking sporadically and almost missed my approval letter. It came on a Tuesday and was just sitting there with all my other mail.

•Good reminder! I usually only check mail on weekends but I should be more consistent.

The approval letter also includes information about your job search requirements. In Washington you need to make 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Make sure you understand those requirements before you start filing weekly claims.
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Oh that's important! I haven't started looking for work yet because I wasn't sure if I was approved. Good to know about the 3 activities per week.

•Yeah you need to start your job search activities right away, even before you get the letter. They can ask for your log anytime.

If you're really worried about missing it, you can always call Washington ESD to confirm they mailed it. Though good luck getting through on the phone... took me 5 hours of calling to reach someone.

•5 hours?! That's insane. I might try that Claimyr service people mentioned if I need to call.

My approval letter came exactly 6 days after my online status changed to 'processed'. It was in a standard white envelope with the Washington State return address. The letter itself is pretty official looking with the state seal at the top.

•6 days is good to know! My status changed 4 days ago so hopefully I'll see it soon.

•Yeah you should get it any day now. Just keep checking your mail daily!

The most important thing on the approval letter is your weekly benefit amount and your claim effective date. Everything else is just details. Make sure those two things look correct when you get it.

•Good point! I'll definitely check those first when I get the letter.

honestly the whole washington esd system is a mess. took them 3 weeks to process my claim and then another week to mail the letter. just be patient i guess

Diego Vargas
•3 weeks is a long time! I hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you have any issues with your claim?

•nah no issues, just slow processing. they're probably backed up

When I got my approval letter it came with a separate pamphlet about WorkSource requirements and job search activities. Make sure you read everything they send you, not just the main letter.

Diego Vargas
•Thanks for the heads up! I'll make sure to read everything carefully when it arrives.

•Yeah there's a lot of important information in those additional documents. Don't just focus on the benefit amount.

I had to use Claimyr twice to get through to Washington ESD about my claim status. First time was to check on the delay, second time was to ask about my job search requirements. Both times I got connected quickly and the agents were helpful. Much better than trying to call on your own.

Your approval letter will also show your base year wages and which employers were included in the calculation. Double check that information to make sure they didn't miss any employers or wages.

Diego Vargas
•That's a good point! I worked for three different companies last year so I'll want to make sure they're all included.

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•Exactly! If they missed any wages it could affect your weekly benefit amount. Better to catch it early if there's an error.

Once you get your approval letter, you can start filing your weekly claims online. The letter will tell you which week you can start with. Don't file for weeks before your effective date or you'll mess up your claim.
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•Good to know! I'll wait for the letter to see exactly when I can start filing. Don't want to mess anything up.

Dylan Cooper
•Smart thinking! Better to wait a few extra days than file incorrectly and have to deal with overpayment issues later.

The approval letter is pretty much your official confirmation that you're eligible for benefits. Keep it in a safe place because you might need to reference it later, especially if you have any issues with your claim.

•Definitely will keep it safe! Thanks everyone for all the helpful information. I feel much more confident about what to expect now.

I went through this same anxiety about missing my approval letter! In my experience, Washington ESD sends the monetary determination letter in a pretty standard white envelope with their return address clearly visible. The key thing that helped me was setting up a daily mail check routine once my status changed to "processed" online. Mine arrived about 5 days after the status change. Also, definitely check your secure messages in your ESD account - they sometimes post documents there as backup. The letter itself is pretty comprehensive and includes your weekly benefit amount, total potential benefits, and when you can start filing weekly claims. Don't stress too much - if it's been mailed, it should arrive soon!
