What day do you claim unemployment benefits with Washington ESD weekly claims?

I'm new to this whole unemployment thing and I'm confused about when I'm supposed to file my weekly claim. I got approved for benefits last week but I don't know what day of the week I should be claiming. Do I file on Sunday? Monday? Does it matter what day I file as long as it's within the week? I don't want to mess this up and lose my benefits.

You can file your weekly claim any day of the week, but you need to wait until after the week you're claiming for is over. So if you're claiming for the week of January 6-12, you can't file until January 13th or later. Most people file on Sunday or Monday.

Oh okay that makes sense. So I should wait until the week is completely finished before filing?

Exactly! You're claiming for work you did or didn't do during that completed week.

I always file mine on Sunday mornings. The Washington ESD system is usually less busy then and it loads faster. Plus it's a good routine to get into.

Same here! Sunday mornings work great for me too.

Good tip about the system being less busy on Sundays, I'll try that.

Just make sure you file by Saturday night for that week or you'll miss the deadline. I learned that the hard way and had to call Washington ESD to fix it. Speaking of calling them - if you ever need to reach someone there, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to a real person. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

Wait, there's a deadline? I thought I just had to file sometime during the week.

You have to file your weekly claim within one week of the week ending. So for the week ending January 12th, you need to file by January 19th.

That Claimyr thing sounds interesting. How much does it cost?

Ethan Brown

I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of getting hung up on after waiting 2 hours.

i file mine every tuesday and never had problems. doesn't really matter what day as long as you do it within the week timeframe

Thanks, that's reassuring to know I have some flexibility.

The key thing is consistency. Pick a day and stick with it so you don't forget. I know people who set reminders on their phone for the same day each week.

That's a really good idea about setting a phone reminder.

Yes! I have mine set for Sunday at 10am and it's been a lifesaver.

Make sure you answer all the questions honestly about any work you did that week. Even if you only worked one day, you need to report it or they'll say you committed fraud.

Good point. I haven't worked at all since getting laid off but I'll make sure to be accurate if I do pick up any side work.

Mateo Perez

Exactly. Always report any earnings, even small amounts. Washington ESD will find out eventually anyway.

The Washington ESD website usually has a little banner that tells you which week you should be claiming for. It's helpful when you're starting out.

I'll look for that banner next time I log in. Thanks!

I've been filing on Saturdays and it works fine. Sometimes the system is a little slow on weekends but nothing major.

I noticed that too about weekends being slower. But it still works.

Whatever you do, don't wait until the last minute. I almost missed a week because I kept putting it off and then forgot about the deadline.

Yeah I definitely don't want to miss any weeks. I need every payment I can get right now.

If you do miss a week you can usually still file it late, but it might delay your payment.

I had trouble reaching Washington ESD when I had questions about my weekly claims. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and they got me through to an actual person in like 15 minutes. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

15 minutes?? That's amazing. I spent 3 hours on hold last week and got disconnected.

0 coins

I might have to try that if I can't get through to them again.

Just remember that filing your weekly claim is basically certifying that you were unemployed that week and eligible for benefits. Take it seriously.

Nia Davis

•

I definitely will. I don't want to mess anything up with my claim.

The mobile app makes it pretty easy to file your weekly claims too. Sometimes easier than the website.

Nia Davis

•

There's a mobile app? I didn't know that. I'll download it.

0 coins

Yeah it's called 'Washington ESD' in the app store. Pretty straightforward to use.

One more thing - make sure you keep doing your job search activities even while filing weekly claims. They can audit you anytime and ask for proof.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been applying to jobs but I should probably keep better records.

Ava Thompson

•

Yeah keep a log of where you applied, when, and what the job was. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

Nia Davis

•

Good to know about the 3 activities requirement. I'll make sure I'm meeting that.

honestly the whole system is confusing at first but you get used to it. just file every week and you'll be fine

Nia Davis

Thanks, I'm hoping it gets easier once I get into a routine with it.

If you ever have issues with your weekly claim not going through or getting stuck, that Claimyr thing really does work. I was skeptical at first but they actually got me connected to Washington ESD when my claim was showing errors.

Good to know there's a backup option if I run into problems. Hopefully I won't need it but it's reassuring.

Make sure your contact info is updated in your Washington ESD account too. Sometimes they need to reach you about your weekly claims.

I'll double check that everything is current. Thanks for all the help everyone!
