What day do I file my weekly unemployment claim with Washington ESD?
I just started collecting unemployment and I'm confused about when exactly I'm supposed to file my weekly claim. I know it's supposed to be done weekly but what specific day of the week? I don't want to mess this up and miss a filing deadline. My first payment went through fine but I want to make sure I'm doing this right going forward.

You can file your weekly claim starting Sunday for the previous week. So if you're filing for the week of January 6-12, you can submit it starting Sunday January 13th. Most people file on Sunday or Monday to get it out of the way.

•Perfect, thanks! So I should file every Sunday for the week that just ended?

•Exactly! Just make sure you're filing for the correct week - it's easy to get confused about which week you're reporting.

I always file mine on Sunday morning while having coffee. Makes it a routine so I never forget. The Washington ESD website is usually pretty quick on Sunday mornings too.

•Same here! Sunday morning routine is the way to go.

•Good idea about making it a routine. I'll try doing it Sunday mornings.

Just a heads up - if you can't get through to the Washington ESD website or phone system when you need to check something about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling when I had an issue with my weekly claim.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. I was having trouble with my job search requirements and needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD. Got through same day instead of calling for weeks.

You have until the following Saturday to file, but don't wait that long! File as soon as possible after Sunday. If you wait too long you might forget important details about your job search activities for that week.

•Oh good point about the job search stuff. I need to keep better track of that.

•Yeah the job search log is important. I keep a running list throughout the week so I don't forget anything when I file on Sunday.

•Good to know it's flexible within the week. Thanks!

One thing to remember - if you work any days during the week you're reporting, make sure you report those hours and earnings accurately. Even if it's just a few hours, Washington ESD needs to know about it.

•What if I just did a small gig job for like 4 hours? Do I still need to report that?
0 coins
Freya Ross
•Yes, report all work and earnings no matter how small. It's better to be honest than risk an overpayment issue later.

•This is so important! I got an overpayment notice because I didn't report some small freelance work. Had to pay back $800.

The Washington ESD website usually works best early in the morning on Sunday. If you try to file later in the day sometimes it gets slow because everyone's doing it at once.

•Yeah I noticed that too. Sunday afternoons the site is really sluggish.

•I'll definitely try early morning then. Thanks for the tip!

Make sure you're keeping track of your job search activities throughout the week! You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and report them when you file. I use a simple spreadsheet to track applications, networking, and other activities.

Butch Sledgehammer
•What counts as job search activities? Just applications?

Atticus Domingo
•Applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews, updating your resume, taking online courses related to your field. Check the WorkSourceWA website for the full list.

•I didn't know about the online courses counting! That's helpful.

If you miss filing for a week, don't panic. You can still file the following week but you might need to call Washington ESD to explain why you missed it. They're usually understanding if it was just a mistake.

•Good to know there's some flexibility if I mess up.

•Yeah but don't make it a habit. They track stuff like that.

Another thing about timing - if you're on standby status (like if you're expecting to be called back to work soon), you still need to file weekly. Same schedule, just different questions on the form.

Butch Sledgehammer
•I'm not on standby but that's good to know for the future.

•Standby can be confusing. I was on it for 2 months waiting to get called back.

Does anyone know if you can file your weekly claim from your phone? The Washington ESD website seems to work okay on mobile but I wasn't sure if that was recommended.

Leslie Parker
•I file from my phone all the time with no issues. Just make sure you're on a good wifi connection.

Butch Sledgehammer
•That's convenient! I'll probably do it from my computer for now but good to know mobile works.

Pro tip: Set a phone reminder for Sunday morning to file your weekly claim. I use a recurring alarm that goes off at 8 AM every Sunday with the note 'File UI claim'. Never missed a week since I started doing that.

•Smart idea! I'm going to set that up right now.

•I do the same thing but I set mine for Saturday night to remind me to prepare my job search log for the next morning.

Question about the job search requirement - if I have a job interview during the week I'm reporting, does that count as job search activity even if I don't get the job?
0 coins
Atticus Domingo
•Yes, interviews definitely count! Make sure to record the date, company name, and position when you file your weekly claim.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Good question, I was wondering about that too.

If you're having trouble accessing your account to file weekly claims, sometimes clearing your browser cookies helps. The Washington ESD website can be finicky about cached login info.

•Haven't had that problem yet but I'll remember that if it happens.

I've been filing for unemployment for about 8 months now and Sunday morning filing has become second nature. The key is consistency - same day, same time every week. Makes it way less likely you'll forget or mess up the timing.

Butch Sledgehammer
•That's a long time to be on unemployment. I hope you find something soon!

•Thanks! Job market has been tough but I'm getting more interviews lately. The routine definitely helps keep everything organized.

One more thing about getting help with Washington ESD - I mentioned Claimyr earlier but wanted to add that it's especially useful if you need to ask about specific timing issues or if your weekly claim gets flagged for some reason. Much easier than trying to call the regular Washington ESD number.

•How does that service work exactly?

•They help you get through to an actual Washington ESD agent quickly. Check out their demo video, it explains everything better than I can.

Don't stress too much about the exact timing. As long as you file sometime between Sunday and Saturday for the previous week, you're good. The important thing is being consistent and accurate with your information.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Thanks, that makes me feel better. I was worried I'd mess something up with the timing.

Sasha Reese
•Yeah Washington ESD is pretty forgiving about timing as long as you're not constantly late or missing weeks.

Make sure you have your Social Security number and all your job search info ready before you start filing. The session can time out if you take too long, and then you have to start over.

Butch Sledgehammer
•Good tip! I'll gather everything first before logging in.

•Yeah I learned that the hard way. Lost all my info and had to re-enter everything.

Sunday filing gang checking in! 🙋♀️ It really is the best day to get it done. Fresh start to the week and you don't have to think about it anymore.

Final reminder about getting help when you need it - if you ever run into issues with your weekly claims or need to talk to Washington ESD about adjudication or anything else, don't spend weeks trying to call. Claimyr.com has been a lifesaver for a lot of people here. Just wanted to mention it one more time since calling Washington ESD directly can be such a nightmare.

•I might have to check that out. I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for two weeks about my claim status.

•Definitely worth trying. Way less frustrating than the regular phone system.
