What day do i certify for unemployment - NYS Department of Labor weekly claim schedule
I just started collecting unemployment and I'm confused about when I'm supposed to certify each week. I know I need to file my weekly claim but I can't figure out what day of the week I'm supposed to do it. My benefit year started last Tuesday but I haven't gotten any clear instructions from NYS Department of Labor about certification day. Do I pick my own day or is there a specific day assigned to me? I don't want to mess this up and lose benefits.

You certify every Sunday for the week that just ended. So this Sunday you'd certify for the week ending Saturday. NYS Department of Labor processes all weekly claims on Sundays, and you can file online starting at 7:30 AM. The system usually asks you about your job search activities and any work you did during that week.

•Thanks! So I can do it anytime on Sunday or does it have to be early morning?

sunday is correct but make sure you do it before midnight or you'll be marked as late filing which can delay your payment

I've been having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone to verify my certification schedule. The wait times are insane and I keep getting disconnected. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and redialing.

•Never heard of that before but might be worth trying if the phone system keeps hanging up on people

Just a heads up - if you miss your Sunday certification you can still file late but your payment might be delayed. I missed one week because I was out of town and forgot, took an extra week to get that payment processed.

The NYS Department of Labor website is terrible for explaining this stuff clearly. I had to call three times before someone explained that Sunday certification is for EVERYONE, not just certain benefit types. They really need better instructions on their site.

•Agreed, their website is so confusing. I spent forever looking for this info before posting here.

One thing that helped me was setting a phone reminder for every Sunday morning. I usually do mine around 8 AM after the system opens at 7:30 AM. The website can get slow later in the day when everyone is trying to certify. Also keep your work search log handy because they'll ask about any job applications or interviews you had during the week.
