NYS Department of Labor unemployment claim - what day to file weekly certification?

I'm confused about the timing for filing my weekly unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor. I just got laid off from my construction job last Friday and filed my initial claim on Monday. Now I'm not sure what day I'm supposed to file my weekly certifications. Do I file on the same day each week or does it depend on when I first applied? The my.ny.gov website isn't super clear about this and I don't want to mess up my benefits by filing on the wrong day.

You file your weekly claim on the same day of the week that you filed your initial application. Since you filed on Monday, you'll file every Monday going forward. NYS Department of Labor gives you a 3-day window though - so you can file Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday for your Monday filing day. Just make sure you're certifying for the week that ended the day before your filing day.

That makes sense! So if I file on Monday I'm certifying for the week that ended Sunday?

yeah I think its the day you applied but honestly the system is so confusing. I've been filing on wednesdays for months and never had an issue

The first response is correct. Your weekly claim filing day is determined by the day you submitted your initial application. NYS Department of Labor assigns you a specific day based on this, and you'll see it clearly labeled in your my.ny.gov account under 'Weekly Claim Filing Day.' You have a 3-day window around that day to actually submit it. Missing your filing window can delay your payment, so it's important to stay consistent.

I had so much trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about this exact thing. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally used claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent who explained the filing schedule. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than sitting on hold for hours!

WAIT so if I filed my initial claim on a Friday does that mean I have to file every Friday?? I've been filing on Sundays this whole time because that's when I have time! Am I going to lose my benefits??

You should check your my.ny.gov account to see what your assigned filing day is. If you've been filing consistently on Sundays and getting paid, you might be within your 3-day window. But definitely verify to be safe.

Just to add - make sure you're not filing too early either. You can only certify for a completed week. So if your filing day is Monday, you're certifying for the week that ended the previous Sunday.

I went through this same confusion when I first applied! The key thing to remember is that you can always double-check your assigned filing day by logging into your my.ny.gov account - it should show your specific weekly claim filing day right on your dashboard. I'd recommend taking a screenshot of that info so you don't forget. Also, if you're ever unsure about whether you're filing correctly, the Department of Labor customer service line can confirm your schedule, though as others mentioned the wait times can be brutal. Better to be safe than sorry with your benefits!

That's really helpful advice about taking a screenshot! I just checked my my.ny.gov account and you're right - it clearly shows my filing day right there on the dashboard. I was overthinking this whole thing. Thanks for the tip about having that info saved, especially since the website can be slow sometimes when you're trying to log in.
