NYS Department of Labor weekly claims - are they weekly or bi-weekly?
I'm confused about when I need to file my unemployment claims with NYS Department of Labor. I just got approved after waiting through adjudication for almost a month. Some people are telling me I file weekly, others say bi-weekly. The my.ny.gov website isn't super clear about this. Can someone explain how often I'm supposed to certify for benefits? I don't want to mess this up and lose my payments.

You file weekly with NYS Department of Labor. Every week you need to certify that you're still unemployed and actively looking for work. The system opens up on Sunday and you have until the following Saturday to file your weekly claim. You'll answer questions about any work you did that week and confirm you're able and available for work.

•Thank you! So I file every single week, not every other week? I was getting confused because someone told me it was bi-weekly.

•Exactly right. You certify weekly but NYS Department of Labor processes payments bi-weekly. So you'll file for week 1, then file for week 2, then get paid for both weeks together. It's a common source of confusion for new claimants.

I had the same confusion when I first started! You definitely file weekly but the payment schedule threw me off. I missed filing one week thinking I could just do it bi-weekly and it caused a whole mess with my claim. Don't make that mistake - file every single week even if you don't get paid every week.

•Oh no, what happened when you missed a week? Did you lose those benefits?

•I had to call NYS Department of Labor to reopen my claim. Took forever to get through on the phone. Actually ended up using this service called Claimyr from claimyr.com that helped me get connected to an agent faster. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

WEEKLY FILING IS MANDATORY! I can't stress this enough. The NYS Department of Labor system is very strict about this. Miss a week and you'll be dealing with a nightmare of phone calls and delays. Set a reminder on your phone for every Sunday morning.

Just to clarify the timeline for you - you need to certify WEEKLY (every week) but payments are processed BI-WEEKLY (every two weeks). So your routine will be: File week 1 claim → File week 2 claim → Receive payment for both weeks → File week 3 claim → File week 4 claim → Receive payment for weeks 3&4, and so on. The key is never skip a weekly certification even though you're not getting paid every week. Hope this helps clear up the confusion!
