How unemployment benefits work in NY - confused about the whole process

I'm totally lost about how unemployment benefits work here in New York. I got laid off last month and everyone keeps telling me different things about filing claims, weekly certifications, job search requirements, etc. I went to the NYS Department of Labor website but it's so confusing with all the forms and terminology. Can someone explain the basic process from start to finish? Like what's the difference between filing your initial claim and doing weekly claims? And what exactly do they mean by 'adjudication'? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and lose my benefits.

The process is actually pretty straightforward once you understand the steps. First, you file your initial unemployment claim on the NYS Department of Labor website. This establishes your benefit year and determines your weekly benefit amount based on your past earnings. After that's approved, you need to file a weekly claim every week to actually receive payments. The weekly claim is basically you certifying that you're still unemployed and actively looking for work. You have to report any work you did that week and any income you received.

Thanks! So the weekly claim is separate from the initial application? How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

You need to do 3 work search activities per week to maintain eligibility. This can include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, or using career services. Keep detailed records because NYS Department of Labor can audit your job search log at any time. If you don't meet the work search requirement, your benefits can be suspended.

This is so stressful keeping track of everything. What happens if you forget to file your weekly claim one week?

About adjudication - that's when there's an issue with your claim that needs investigation. Could be because your employer contested it, there's a question about why you left your job, or they need to verify your identity. During adjudication your payments are put on hold until they make a determination. I've been stuck in adjudication for 2 weeks now because my former employer is claiming I quit instead of being laid off.

Oh no! How do you prove you were laid off and didn't quit? This is exactly what I'm worried about.

I had trouble reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor when my claim got stuck. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to a real agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me weeks of frustration trying to get my adjudication issue resolved.

The timing is important - you can file your weekly claim starting Sunday for the week that just ended. You have until the following Saturday to file it, but don't wait because if you miss the deadline you could lose that week's benefits permanently. Also make sure you're reporting your job search activities accurately on each weekly claim.

This is all so much to remember! Is there like a checklist somewhere of everything you need to do to keep your benefits?
