When to file first weekly claim after receiving final paycheck from employer?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits this Wednesday (Dec 18, 2025) but I'm confused about when to start filing my weekly claims. My employer is going to pay me my final paycheck next Tuesday (Dec 24). Should I wait until after I receive that final check before filing my first weekly claim? Or should I file this Sunday and just report the income I'll be receiving? I was thinking maybe I should just start with the weekly claim on Sunday Dec 29th to avoid any complications. Anyone know the correct procedure for this? I don't want to mess up my claim right from the start!

You should start filing your weekly claims immediately! Don't wait. The system is designed for you to report any income you receive during the week you're claiming. When you file your claim for this week, you'll report the final paycheck you expect to receive on the 24th. ESD will automatically adjust your benefit amount based on the income you report. Waiting to file could potentially cause a gap in your claim that might complicate things later.

•Oh, that makes sense! So I should file this Sunday (Dec 22) for the week of Dec 15-21, and then next Sunday (Dec 29) I report the final payment I got on the 24th? Just want to make sure I understand correctly.

doesnt matter when u get paid, what matters is when u EARNED the money. if u already did all the work for that final check before u were approved then u dont need to report it. thats how it worked for me anyway

•That's not correct. You need to report income when you RECEIVE it, not when you earn it. ESD specifically asks about payments received during the week you're claiming. Providing incorrect information could result in an overpayment that you'd have to pay back later.

I was in THE EXACT same situation back in March!!! What a headache with ESD!!! I started filing weekly claims right away but then when I got my final paycheck (which included vacation payout) they said I was OVERPAID and now I'm dealing with trying to appeal it. Whatever you do MAKE SURE you report any and all income you receive during each week you claim!!!

•Yikes, thanks for the warning! I don't think I have any vacation payout coming, but I'll definitely make sure to report everything correctly.

Start filing your weekly claims immediately after being approved, which means you should file this Sunday for the previous week. Here's what you need to know: 1. Report any income received during the week you're claiming 2. Your final paycheck on Dec 24 would be reported on the weekly claim you file on Dec 29 3. If your final check includes regular wages plus vacation/severance, be sure to report the total amount 4. You may receive reduced or zero benefits for weeks where your income exceeds your weekly benefit amount Remember that filing consistently each week is important to maintain an active claim, even if you receive reduced benefits for a particular week due to reported income.

•This is really helpful, thank you! But wait, I'm confused about something else - do the weeks run Sunday to Saturday? Or Monday to Sunday? I never know which days to include when filing.

To answer the question above: ESD's claim weeks run Sunday through Saturday. So when you file on Sunday, you're reporting for the previous week that ended on Saturday.

•Thank you! This makes everything much clearer. I'll start filing this coming Sunday and make sure to report my final paycheck correctly.

If you're having trouble getting through to ESD to ask questions like this (I know I did!), I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual ESD agent without waiting for hours. Just go to claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It really helped when I had questions about reporting my final paycheck and severance pay that confused the heck out of me.

•YES!! I used Claimyr too when I was dealing with my overpayment issue! Seriously the only way I actually got to talk to a real person at ESD without spending my entire life on hold!

One more important thing: if your final paycheck includes any vacation payout, severance, or other separation pay, make sure you understand how to report that correctly. Those types of payments can affect your benefits differently than regular wages. If you're unsure, it's always better to contact ESD directly to get clarification for your specific situation.

•Thanks for the heads-up. I think my final check is just regular wages for my last week of work, but I'll double-check with my employer to make sure there's no vacation time or anything else included.

I waited to file my first claim and it was a HUGE mistake! ESD questioned why there was a gap between when I was approved and when I started filing. Had to go through adjudication for 5 weeks before I got a single payment! Don't make my mistake!

•Oh wow, definitely don't want that to happen! Thanks for sharing your experience - I'll start filing this Sunday for sure.
