How to get in touch with Washington ESD unemployment office - phone keeps hanging up
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over a week now about my unemployment claim status and I can't get through to anyone. Every time I call the main number it either says high call volume and hangs up, or I wait on hold for 2+ hours just to get disconnected. I need to talk to someone about why my weekly claim is showing pending when I've been filing correctly. Is there any way to actually get in touch with a real person at the unemployment office? This is so frustrating.

The phone system is completely overwhelmed right now. I've had the same issue - called 50+ times last week and only got through once. Try calling right at 8am when they open, that's your best shot.

•I tried that already but even at 8am sharp it says high call volume immediately. Do you know if there's a different number?

•Unfortunately the main customer service line is the only way to reach them for claim issues. The other numbers are just automated systems.

•Have you tried the secure messaging system through your online account? Sometimes that works better than calling.

•yeah i sent like 5 messages, no response. they dont care

•It's so frustrating! I don't understand how they expect us to resolve issues if we can't even talk to anyone.

•The phone system is definitely overloaded. I've had better luck calling right when they open at 8am, but even then it's hit or miss.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. You give them your info and they call for you until they reach an agent, then conference you in. Saved me hours of calling. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't publish pricing on the site but it was worth it to finally talk to someone about my claim.

•I've heard of this but never tried it. Did they actually get you to the right department for your specific issue?

•Yes, they got me to someone who could look at my pending weekly claims. Took about 45 minutes for them to reach an agent then they called me.

The phone situation is ridiculous. I spent 6 hours yesterday trying to call and never got through. Meanwhile my bills are piling up and I can't get answers about why my claim is stuck.

•I feel your frustration. The system is definitely overwhelmed. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues showing in your online account that might be causing the delay?

•Nothing shows up online, just says processing. That's why I need to talk to someone.

try calling different times of day maybe?? i heard lunch time is better

•I've tried every hour from 8am to 4pm over multiple days. There's no magic time - it's just luck of the draw whether you get through.

For what it's worth, when you do get through, have your Social Security number, claim confirmation number, and any relevant dates ready. The agents can help resolve most issues if you have the right information available.

•Good point. I have all my paperwork ready, just need to actually reach someone. Do you know if they can see why weekly claims are pending?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Rashid
•Yes, they can see the specific reason for any delays or holds on your claim. That's exactly the kind of thing you need to speak to an agent about.

This is exactly why the unemployment system needs to be completely overhauled. People are desperate and can't even get basic information about their own claims. It's unacceptable.

•totally agree, the whole system is garbage

•The pandemic really exposed how outdated their infrastructure is. Other states upgraded their systems but Washington seems stuck in the past.

The Washington ESD phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through on. Peak calling times are usually 9am-11am and 1pm-3pm, so avoid those windows. Try calling at 8am sharp when they open or after 4pm. Also make sure you're dialing the right number - the main UI customer service line is 800-318-6022.

•I've been calling that exact number! I'll try the 8am strategy tomorrow. How long should I expect to wait on hold?

•Even at the best times, you're looking at 30-45 minutes minimum. Sometimes longer depending on what's going on with claims processing.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I was stuck in adjudication hell for 6 weeks. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you - you just get a callback when they connect you to an agent. Saved me literally hours of frustration. Check out claimyr.com, they have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•That sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work? Do you have to give them your personal info?
0 coins
Freya Pedersen
•Nah, it's pretty straightforward. You just tell them what you need help with and they handle the calling part. They don't need your SSN or claim details - just basic contact info so they can call you back when they get an agent on the line.

•I used Claimyr too when my weekly claims weren't going through properly. Got connected to an agent in like 2 hours instead of spending days trying to call myself.

The Washington ESD system is absolutely broken. I've been unemployed for 2 months and spent probably 40+ hours trying to get through on the phone. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through these hoops just to get basic help with our claims.

•I understand the frustration, but there are usually legitimate reasons for delays. The key is getting through to someone who can actually look at your specific claim and explain what's happening.

Have you tried using the secure messaging system on your Washington ESD account? Sometimes that's faster than calling, especially for simple status questions. Log into your account and look for the 'Contact Us' or messaging option.

Malik Davis
•I sent a message through the secure system 5 days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Do they actually respond to those?
0 coins
Ravi Gupta
•They're supposed to respond within 2-3 business days, but it's been taking longer lately. If it's urgent, calling is still your best bet.

•i tried messaging too and got a generic response that didn't answer my question at all

Update: I tried Claimyr after reading about it here and they actually got me through! Took about an hour but I finally talked to someone who explained why my claim was pending. Apparently there was a work search verification they needed. Thanks for the suggestion!

•Just basic stuff like name and phone number so they could call me back when they got through. Pretty straightforward process.

For what it's worth, here's what I've learned about getting through to Washington ESD: Call exactly at 8:00am, have your Social Security number and claim confirmation number ready, and be prepared to wait. Don't hang up even if you're on hold for an hour - once you're in the queue, you're in. Also, if you get disconnected, call back immediately because sometimes the system glitches.

•Good advice! I'm definitely going to try the 8am strategy. Should I call every day or space it out?
0 coins
GalacticGuru
•I'd say try every day if your situation is urgent. The phone lines reset each morning so yesterday's busy signal doesn't affect today's chances.

Has anyone tried going to a WorkSource office in person? I wonder if they can help with claim issues or if it's phone only.

Fatima Al-Rashid
•WorkSource can help with job search requirements and some general questions, but for specific claim issues you still need to call the main Washington ESD line.

I've been calling for my mom who's not great with technology and it's been impossible. She's been waiting 3 weeks for her claim to be approved and we can't get any information.
0 coins
Zoe Papadopoulos
•That's really tough. The waiting without information is the worst part. Has she checked online to see if there are any action items she needs to complete?
0 coins
Amara Okafor
•I've checked for her and everything looks complete on her end. Just shows 'processing' with no other details.

•You might want to look into that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Since you're helping your mom, it could save you both a lot of stress trying to get through.

The automated system is useless too. All it does is repeat the same basic information that's already online. No way to get actual help.

Just want to add another vote for Claimyr - used them when I had an overpayment issue that needed to be resolved. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on. The video demo they have explains it pretty well.

•I'm starting to think this might be worth trying. How quickly do they usually get you connected?

update: tried calling at 8am this morning and actually got through after 45 minutes! agent was super helpful and explained my claim status. definitely try the early morning approach

Another tip - if you're calling about a specific issue like adjudication or an appeal, make sure you mention that right away when you get connected. The agents can sometimes transfer you to a specialist who can actually help instead of just taking a message.

Malik Davis
•Good point! My claim is stuck in adjudication so I'll make sure to mention that immediately.

Has anyone tried contacting their state representative? I've heard sometimes they can help escalate issues with Washington ESD when you can't get through normal channels.
0 coins
GalacticGuru
•That's actually a legitimate option for complex cases that have been dragging on for months. Most reps have staff who deal with agency issues.

Final update: I tried Claimyr this morning and got connected to a Washington ESD agent within 2 hours. Turns out my claim was held up because they needed additional verification of my last employer. Agent was able to tell me exactly what documents to upload and my claim was approved the same day. Definitely worth it if you're stuck and can't get through on your own.

What about emailing them? Do they have an email address for questions?

•There's no direct email for individual claim questions. The secure messaging through your online account is the only electronic option, and response times are very slow.

The whole situation is making me anxious about my claim. What if there's a problem and I can't reach anyone to fix it?
