How to get ahold of Washington ESD unemployment - phone lines always busy
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks about my unemployment claim and I literally can't get through. The phone just rings busy or disconnects me after being on hold for hours. I need to talk to someone about my weekly claim that got rejected but there's no explanation in my account. Has anyone figured out a way to actually get ahold of someone at unemployment? This is getting ridiculous.

Same problem here! I've been calling the main number 833-572-8400 every day at 8am and still can't get through. My claim has been in adjudication for 3 weeks.

•At least yours is in adjudication - mine just says 'not payable' with zero explanation!

•Try calling right at 8am when they open. I got through once after 47 minutes on hold but then got disconnected.

The phone system is completely overwhelmed. Best times to call are Tuesday-Thursday between 10am-2pm. Avoid Mondays and Fridays at all costs. Also try the callback feature if you can find it in the phone menu.

•What callback feature? I've never heard that option when I call.

•It's buried in the menu system - you have to press like 3 different numbers to get to it. But even then it doesn't always work.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. They basically call for you and conference you in when they reach an agent. Worked for me after weeks of trying on my own. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•How much does that cost though? Sounds too good to be true.

•It's way cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day. Plus they actually got me connected to someone who could fix my claim issue.

•I'm desperate enough at this point that I might try anything. Did they actually help resolve your problem?

The Washington ESD phone system is a joke. I've wasted probably 20+ hours trying to get through. My neighbor said she tried calling 300+ times before getting connected.

•300 times?? That's insane. There has to be a better way.

•That's what I thought too but apparently that's just how it is now. The system can't handle the volume.

Pro tip: download an auto-dialer app on your phone. Set it to redial the unemployment number every 30 seconds. I got through after 4 hours of auto-dialing yesterday.

•Which app did you use? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

•I used Auto Redial but there are several options. Just make sure your phone doesn't overheat from all the calling!

•This is ridiculous that we have to resort to this just to talk to someone about our benefits.

Has anyone tried going to WorkSource in person? I heard they might be able to help with some unemployment issues.

•WorkSource can help with job search requirements but they can't access your claim details. You still need to talk to Washington ESD directly for claim issues.

•Figures. So we're back to the phone lines from hell.

I've been unemployed for 6 months and this is the worst part of the whole experience. Not getting benefits is one thing but not being able to talk to ANYONE about why is just cruel.

•I feel you. The stress of not knowing what's wrong with your claim is almost worse than being unemployed.

Brianna Schmidt
•Exactly! At least tell me WHY my claim was rejected so I can fix it.

Try calling the 866 number instead of the 833 number. Sometimes one is less busy than the other: 866-239-0843

•Is that a real Washington ESD number? I don't want to call some scam line.

•It's legit - it's on the Washington ESD website. Just another way into the same system but sometimes has shorter wait times.

The whole system needs to be overhauled. It's 2025 and we're still dealing with phone systems from the 1990s. Other states have much better online systems.

•Washington's online system isn't terrible but you still need to call for most real issues.

Zoe Wang
•That's the problem - the online system should be able to handle 90% of issues without needing to call.

Just wanted to follow up - used Claimyr again this week and got connected to Washington ESD in under 30 minutes. The agent was able to explain why my weekly claim was rejected (missing work search activity) and walked me through how to fix it. Definitely worth it if you're stuck.

•Ok I'm convinced. Going to try Claimyr today. This is ridiculous that we need a third party service but here we are.

•I was skeptical about Claimyr at first but honestly they saved me so much time and stress. Got my claim issue resolved in one call.

Another trick: call right at 11:59am. Sometimes you can get in the queue before the lunch rush hits at noon.

Brianna Schmidt
•I'll try that tomorrow. At this point I'm willing to try calling at 3am if someone says it works.

Grace Durand
•Haha don't try 3am - they're closed! But seriously the timing can make a huge difference.

Been through this nightmare too. What finally worked for me was persistence and having all my info ready. SSN, phone number, dates of employment, reason for separation, etc. When you do get through, have everything ready so you don't waste time.

Brianna Schmidt
•Good point. I should probably write down all my info before calling so I'm not scrambling when I finally get someone.

•Also have your confirmation numbers ready for any documents you've submitted. Agents can look things up faster with those numbers.

•I get the frustration but the agents I've talked to have been helpful once I actually reach them. It's just getting through that's the problem.

•fair enough but the whole system shouldnt be this hard to access

Has anyone tried emailing instead of calling? I found some email addresses on the Washington ESD website but not sure if they actually respond.

Tyler Lefleur
•I tried emailing 3 weeks ago and never got a response. Phone is really the only way for urgent issues.

•That's disappointing but not surprising. Guess I'm back to phone torture.

UPDATE: Finally got through after trying the Claimyr service mentioned earlier. Turns out my claim was flagged because I didn't complete my work search log properly. Agent walked me through exactly what I needed to do and my claim was released the next day. Wish I had known about this service weeks ago!

•That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow. Thanks for the update!

•How long did the whole process take with Claimyr? From when you contacted them to when you were talking to Washington ESD?

•Maybe 20 minutes total? They called me back pretty quick and then got me connected to an agent. Way better than spending all day calling myself.
