How do I contact Washington ESD about my unemployment claim?
I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for over a week now about my pending claim but can't get through on the phone. Every time I call the main number it just says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up on me. I've tried the online messaging system but haven't heard back. My claim has been stuck in adjudication for 2 weeks and I really need to talk to someone. What's the best way to actually reach a real person at unemployment?

The phone lines open at 8am Monday through Friday. You need to call right at 8:00:00 or you won't get through. I usually start dialing at 7:59:50 and hit call exactly at 8. Even then it takes multiple attempts.

•I've tried calling right at 8am several times but still get the busy signal. How many times do you usually have to redial?

•Sometimes 20-30 times in the first few minutes. It's frustrating but eventually one will go through to the hold queue.

honestly the phone system is broken, i gave up after calling 100+ times over 3 days

•Don't give up! I know it's frustrating but persistence is key. Have you tried using the callback feature if you do get through to hold?

•there's a callback feature?? where do i find that

I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. You go to claimyr.com and they basically call for you and connect you when an agent picks up. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Is that legit? How much does it cost? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't ask for any personal info about your claim or anything, just your phone number so they can connect you.

•I used Claimyr too when my weekly claim got stuck. Much better than spending my whole day redialing.

THE PHONE SYSTEM IS A JOKE! I've been calling for 3 weeks straight and either get hung up on immediately or sit on hold for 2+ hours just to get disconnected. This is supposed to help people who are unemployed but they make it impossible to reach anyone!

•I understand the frustration, but there are strategies that work better than others. Have you tried calling different numbers? The UI claims line sometimes has shorter wait times than the main number.

•What's the UI claims number? I've only been calling the main 833 number.

•The direct UI line is on the Washington ESD website under contact info. Also try calling right after lunch around 1pm - sometimes there's a brief lull in call volume.

Another tip - if you're calling about adjudication specifically, mention that when you first talk to the agent. They can sometimes transfer you directly to the adjudication unit instead of general customer service.

•Good to know! My issue is definitely adjudication related so I'll make sure to say that upfront.

•what exactly is adjudication? my claim says that but idk what it means

•Adjudication means they're reviewing something about your claim that needs manual verification - could be your work history, reason for separation, or eligibility. It usually takes 2-4 weeks to resolve.

I work in customer service (not for ESD) and from experience I can tell you Tuesday-Thursday between 10am-2pm are usually the best times to call any government office. Mondays and Fridays are swamped.

•That makes sense! I'll try calling Wednesday morning instead of Monday.

•interesting, i always thought early morning was best but maybe mid-morning is better

Have you tried using the SecureAccess Washington portal to send a message? Sometimes that gets faster responses than calling.

•I mentioned in my post that I tried the online messaging but haven't heard back after a week.

•Oh sorry, missed that. Yeah the messaging system is pretty slow too unfortunately.

•The messaging never works for anything urgent. I sent a message about my overpayment notice and didn't hear back for 3 weeks.

Pro tip: if you do get through and they can't help you immediately, ask for a reference number for your call. That way if you have to call back you can reference the previous conversation.

•Smart thinking! I'll definitely ask for that.

•yes! and write down the agent's name too, sometimes that helps when you call back

My cousin works for a call center and she says those automated hangup messages usually mean they've hit their daily call limit. So calling later in the day is basically pointless.

•That would explain why I never get through after noon. So frustrating that they limit calls when people need help.

•makes sense why everyone says to call first thing in the morning then

I actually had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Used it last month when my claim got disqualified and I needed to talk to someone about appealing. Way better than the endless calling.

•How long did it take for them to connect you? I'm seriously considering it at this point.

Alejandro Castro
•It took about 45 minutes for them to get an agent and then they called me back to connect us. Much better than me sitting there redialing for hours.

Whatever you do, don't give up! I was in a similar situation last year with my adjudication taking forever. Once I finally got through they were able to resolve it pretty quickly. The hard part is just making contact.

•Thanks for the encouragement! It's good to hear that once you reach someone they can actually help.

•yeah the agents are usually helpful once you get to talk to one, it's just the phone system that's terrible

One more suggestion - if you have a local WorkSource office, sometimes they can help with basic questions or even call ESD on your behalf. Might be worth checking if yours is open for in-person visits.

Danielle Campbell
•I didn't know WorkSource could help with ESD issues! I'll look up my local office.

•Not all WorkSource offices do this but some have direct lines to ESD that bypass the regular phone system.

•my worksource office was closed when i went there last week, but maybe they're open again now

Just want to echo what others said about persistence. It took me 3 days of calling but I eventually got through and got my payment issue resolved. The system is frustrating but don't lose hope!

•Thanks everyone for all the advice! I feel much more prepared now. Going to try the early morning calling strategy first and maybe look into Claimyr if that doesn't work.
