How to get through to Washington ESD unemployment office - phone keeps disconnecting
I've been trying to reach someone at the Washington ESD unemployment office for over a week now and I'm getting nowhere. Every time I call the main number I either get disconnected after waiting on hold for 2+ hours or the system just hangs up on me automatically. My weekly claim has been pending for 3 weeks and I really need to speak with someone to find out what's going on. Has anyone had any luck actually getting through to a real person lately? What's the best time to call or is there some trick I'm missing?

ugh same problem here! I've called probably 50+ times in the past two weeks

•It's so frustrating! I'm starting to think they just don't want to talk to anyone.

•The system is completely overwhelmed right now. I work in customer service and I've never seen anything this bad.

Best times are usually right when they open at 8am or during lunch around 12-1pm when call volume drops slightly. Also try calling on Tuesdays or Wednesdays - Mondays and Fridays are always slammed.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try calling tomorrow right at 8am.

•I tried calling at 8am sharp yesterday and still couldn't get through. Waited 3 hours before giving up.

•Yeah it's really hit or miss. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. The key is persistence unfortunately.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD last month. They have some kind of system that calls for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of sitting on hold. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•That sounds too good to be true... how much does it cost?

•It's worth checking out their website for details. For me it was worth it just to avoid the endless hold times and disconnections.

•Interesting, I'll look into this. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely broken. I've been dealing with an adjudication issue for 6 weeks and can't get anyone to explain what documents they need from me. It's ridiculous that we can't even talk to someone about our own claims.

•6 weeks?! That's insane. Have you tried messaging them through your online account?
0 coins
Savannah Vin
•Yes, sent multiple messages through the secure messaging system. No response to any of them.

•The secure messaging system is backed up just as bad as the phones right now.

Pro tip: when you do get through to hold, DON'T hang up even if the wait time seems crazy long. I waited 4.5 hours last week but finally got to speak with someone who resolved my issue in 10 minutes.

•4.5 hours?! That's basically a full work day just waiting on hold.

•I know it's ridiculous but at least I got my problem solved. Better than calling 20+ times and never getting through.

Has anyone tried going to a WorkSource office in person? I'm wondering if they can help with Washington ESD issues or if it's a waste of time.

•WorkSource can help with some basic questions but for claim-specific issues you usually need to talk directly to Washington ESD.

•Figured as much. Thanks for saving me a trip.

•I went to WorkSource last month and they were helpful with job search requirements but couldn't touch my claim status.

The callback feature on their website never works either. I've requested probably 10 callbacks over the past month and haven't received a single one.

Mason Stone
•Same here! I think that feature is just for show at this point.

•The callback system got overwhelmed early in the pandemic and never really recovered.

I actually had success with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Used it last week when my claim got stuck in adjudication and they got me through to an agent in about 45 minutes. The agent was able to tell me exactly what documentation I needed to submit.

•45 minutes sounds amazing compared to what I've been dealing with. Definitely going to check this out.

•Did you have to give them your personal information?

Makayla Shoemaker
•Just basic info to set up the call. They don't access your account or anything like that.

Try calling the technical support line instead of the main claims line. Sometimes they can transfer you or at least give you better information about wait times.

Chad Winthrope
•What's the tech support number? Is it different from the main line?

Christian Bierman
•It's listed on the Washington ESD website under contact information. Worth a try when the main line isn't working.

I've been calling every day for 2 weeks. My benefits got cut off because of some verification issue and I can't even find out what they need from me. This is affecting my ability to pay rent.

Kiara Fisherman
•That's exactly when I used Claimyr - when I had a verification hold and couldn't get through. The agent was able to explain the issue and reprocess my claim the same day.

•I'm going to look into that service today. Can't keep going like this.

•Check your online account messages too - sometimes they send requests for documents there instead of by mail.

The system is completely broken. I've been unemployed for 8 months and probably spent 100+ hours just trying to get through to someone on the phone. It's a joke.

Kylo Ren
•100+ hours is insane but I believe it. The amount of time we waste just trying to access services we're entitled to is ridiculous.

•Unfortunately it's been like this since the pandemic hit and they haven't been able to catch up.

Does anyone know if there's a specific department for adjudication issues? My claim has been under review for a month with no updates.
0 coins
Nina Fitzgerald
•All adjudication goes through the same department. You need to speak with a claims specialist who can access your file.

Sophie Duck
•That's what I figured. Just frustrating not knowing if they even have all the documents they need.

I gave up calling and just kept filing my weekly claims hoping it would resolve itself. Bad idea - now I have 8 weeks of pending payments.

Mason Stone
•Keep filing the weekly claims but you definitely need to get the underlying issue resolved or you'll never see those payments.

Austin Leonard
•Yeah I learned that the hard way. Going to try some of the suggestions in this thread.

The automated system sometimes lets you check your claim status without waiting for an agent. Press 1 for English, then 3 for claim information. Not always helpful but sometimes gives you basic info.

Chad Winthrope
•I've tried that but it just gives me the same info I can see online. Need to actually talk to someone.

Anita George
•True, but sometimes it at least confirms they received documents you submitted.

My cousin works for Washington ESD and she says they're down about 40% staffing from pre-pandemic levels while dealing with way more claims. The agents are doing their best but there just aren't enough of them.

Liam Cortez
•That explains a lot. Still doesn't help those of us who need answers though.

•I feel bad for the agents too. They're probably dealing with frustrated people all day every day.

UPDATE: I tried the Claimyr service that was mentioned and actually got through to Washington ESD in under an hour! The agent was able to fix my pending claim issue and release 3 weeks of back payments. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck like I was.

Chad Winthrope
•That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try it. How exactly does it work?

•You just give them your info and they call Washington ESD for you. When they get through to an agent, they conference you in. Super easy.

For what it's worth, I finally got through yesterday after calling at exactly 11:47am. Seems like there might be a brief window when agents come back from breaks or something.

Chad Winthrope
•Interesting timing. I'll try calling around that time tomorrow.

•Could be a shift change or break time. Good observation!

The whole system needs an overhaul. It shouldn't take 20+ phone calls just to ask a simple question about your own unemployment claim. Glad there are services like Claimyr helping people navigate this mess.

Mason Stone
•Agreed. The fact that third-party services are needed just to access basic government services says everything about how broken the system is.

Nina Fitzgerald
•Hopefully they'll invest in more staff and better phone systems soon. This can't continue indefinitely.

•Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Going to try the 8am calling strategy and also check out Claimyr. Will update if I have any success.
