How to call Washington ESD unemployment office - tips for getting through?
I've been trying to call the Washington ESD unemployment office for over a week now and I can't get through to anyone. Every time I dial the main number I either get a busy signal or sit on hold for hours before getting disconnected. My weekly claim has an issue that needs to be resolved and I can't figure out how to fix it online. Does anyone have tips for actually reaching a human at Washington ESD? What's the best time to call or is there a different number that works better?

I had the same problem last month. Try calling right at 8am when they open - that's your best shot. Also make sure you're calling the right number, it's different for different issues.

•What number did you use? I've been calling the main customer service line but maybe there's a better one.

•For claim issues I used the regular UI customer service line. But honestly even at 8am it took me like 45 minutes to get through.

ugh this is so frustrating! I've been calling for 3 days straight and haven't talked to anyone yet. My claim is stuck in adjudication and I need to provide documents but can't figure out how to upload them.

•For document uploads you might be able to do that through your SecureAccess Washington account without calling. Check under the documents section.

•I tried that but it won't let me upload anything. Says I need to call to resolve the issue first.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I was having similar issues. You basically give them your info and they call for you and get you connected to an agent. Saved me hours of calling myself. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't mention pricing upfront but it was worth it to me to not waste entire days calling.

•I might try this if I can't get through today. Getting desperate here.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely terrible. I spent 6 hours yesterday calling and got disconnected 4 times after waiting on hold. It's like they don't want people to actually get help.

•Same experience here. It's ridiculous how hard it is to reach them when you have a legitimate issue.

•I think they're just overwhelmed. The system wasn't built for this volume of calls.

Pro tip: if you're calling about a specific issue, make sure you have all your documents and information ready before you call. Nothing worse than finally getting through and then having to call back because you weren't prepared. Also write down the agent's name and any reference numbers they give you.

•Good advice. What kind of info should I have ready for a weekly claim issue?

Amara Okonkwo
•Your Social Security number, claim confirmation number, employment history for the past 18 months, and details about the specific error you're seeing. Also any correspondence you've received from Washington ESD.

I've been calling every day for 2 weeks and I'm about to lose my mind. My benefits got cut off for no reason and I can't get anyone to explain why.

•Did you check your account online to see if there are any alerts or requirements you missed?

Sofia Rodriguez
•Yeah there's nothing there. It just says my claim is under review but no details about what triggered it.

•This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helped me. When you're stuck in limbo like this you really need to talk to someone who can look at your account.

Try calling the Spanish language line even if you speak English. Sometimes it's less busy and they can transfer you to an English speaker.

•That's actually pretty clever. Does it really work?

•Worked for me twice. Not saying it always will but worth a shot when you're desperate.

Another thing to try is calling different offices directly instead of the main line. Some of the regional WorkSource offices can help with certain issues and they're usually less busy.

•Which offices can help with claim issues? I thought they were just for job search stuff.

Mei Chen
•They can help with some basic stuff but for complex claim issues you'll still need to reach the main Washington ESD office.

I finally got through after 2 hours on hold yesterday. The agent was helpful but said they're getting 10x more calls than normal. She suggested trying to resolve simple issues through the website first.

•What did you need help with? Was it something that could have been done online?

•I had a job search requirement question that she said I could have found the answer to in the handbook online. But honestly the website is confusing too.

•Three days?? I don't have that kind of time. There has to be a better way.

•i know its frustrating but what else can you do. the system sucks but you gotta work with what you have

Has anyone tried emailing them? I sent a message through the website but haven't heard back in 5 days.

•Email responses can take 2-3 weeks right now. Phone is still your best bet for urgent issues.

•Ugh, that's not helpful when you need an answer quickly.

I work during the day so I can only call during lunch breaks. By the time I get through to someone (if I do) my break is over and I have to hang up. It's impossible.

•This is another situation where something like Claimyr might help. They can call during the day when you can't and then connect you when you're available.

•Hmm that's interesting. I might look into that since my schedule is so limited.

The callback feature on their phone system doesn't work either. I've requested callbacks 3 times and never got one.

Mei Chen
•Yeah I've heard that from multiple people. I don't think anyone's gotten a callback that actually worked.

•Same here. I think they just have that option to make people think there's another way to reach them.

Honestly the whole system is broken. I've been unemployed for 3 months and half that time has been spent trying to fix issues with my claim instead of looking for work.

•I feel you. It's like they make it as hard as possible on purpose.

Amara Okonkwo
•I know it's frustrating but remember that the agents you do reach are just trying to help. The system issues aren't their fault personally.

Update: I tried the Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked! Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling all day myself. Definitely recommend if you're stuck.

•Really? That's amazing. I'm going to try it today then.

•How does it work exactly? Do they just call for you or what?

•You give them your info and they handle the calling and waiting. Then they connect you directly to the agent when they get through. Way better than doing it yourself.

I've called over 100 times in the past month. Literally counted. This is insane.

•100 times?! That's crazy. What issue are you trying to resolve?

•Overpayment notice that I think is wrong. Need to speak to someone who can actually look at my account and explain it.

For anyone reading this thread: document everything. Every time you call, write down the date, time, how long you waited, and what happened. If you do get through, get the agent's name and ask for a reference number for your call.

Amara Okonkwo
•Excellent advice. Having a paper trail is crucial if you need to escalate issues later.

•I wish I had been doing this from the beginning. Good to know for future calls.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Going to try calling first thing tomorrow morning and if that doesn't work I'll look into that Claimyr thing. This has been really helpful!

One more tip: if you do get through and the agent can't help you, ask to be transferred to a supervisor or specialist. Sometimes the first person you talk to doesn't have access to fix certain issues.

Ava Thompson
•Good point. I had to be transferred twice before getting someone who could actually help with my adjudication issue.

•Thanks, I'll remember that. Hopefully I can get through to someone soon.

The Washington ESD really needs to invest in better phone infrastructure. This is ridiculous for a state agency.

•Totally agree. Other states seem to handle this better.

•It's gotten worse since COVID. They've been trying to upgrade the system but it's a slow process unfortunately.

I've been dealing with this same nightmare for weeks! What finally worked for me was calling exactly at 7:59am and hitting redial continuously until I got through the busy signal. Also, I found that Tuesday and Wednesday mornings seem to be slightly less busy than Mondays. Another trick - if you get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message, don't hang up! Stay on the line because sometimes it will still put you in the queue even though it sounds like they're telling you to call back later. Hang in there everyone, it's frustrating but persistence really does pay off eventually.
