How to contact Washington ESD unemployment by phone - anyone actually get through?
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for two weeks about my unemployment claim and I literally cannot get through on the phone. I call the main number (833-572-8400) right when they open at 8am and either get a busy signal or sit on hold for hours before getting disconnected. My weekly claim got flagged for some reason and I can't certify online anymore. Has anyone figured out the secret to actually talking to a human being at Washington ESD? This is so frustrating!

The phone system is absolutely overwhelmed. I've had better luck calling around 2-3pm on weekdays, but even then it's hit or miss. Make sure you're calling the right number - 833-572-8400 is correct for general UI questions. If your claim is flagged, you might need to speak to an adjudicator which can take even longer to reach.

•Thanks! I'll try the afternoon timing. Do you know if there's a specific extension or option I should press to get to someone about flagged claims?

•Usually it's option 1 for English, then option 1 again for unemployment benefits, then option 3 for claim issues. But the menu changes sometimes so listen carefully.

•A month is way too long for a pending claim. You should definitely keep trying to call, but also consider sending a secure message through your eServices account if you haven't already.

•i tried the secure messaging but they just sent back a generic response that didnt help at all

I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through for weeks. Then I found this service called Claimyr that actually calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an agent. Sounds too good to be true but I was desperate so I tried it. They got me through in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Wait really? How does that even work? Is it legit or some kind of scam?

Theodore Nelson
•It's totally legit. They basically use technology to keep calling and wait on hold for you, then call you back when they get a human on the line. I was skeptical too but it actually worked.

•That sounds amazing but also expensive? How much does something like that cost?

•Honestly worth whatever it costs when you're stuck like this. Way better than losing weeks of benefits because you can't get through.

Pro tip: call exactly at 8:00:00 AM when they open. Not 8:01, not 7:59, but right at 8:00. Set multiple alarms. I've gotten through this way about 30% of the time. Also try calling on Wednesdays or Thursdays - Mondays and Fridays are the worst.

•This actually works! I got through twice using this method. The key is being super precise with the timing.

•I've been calling at 8am but maybe not exactly on the dot. I'll try being more precise tomorrow morning.

The whole system is broken. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my adjudication to complete and can't get anyone to tell me what's taking so long. They're supposed to make decisions within 21 days but that's obviously not happening. Meanwhile I'm behind on rent because I can't get my benefits.

•6 weeks for adjudication is definitely too long. That's grounds for escalation. Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? They sometimes have a direct line to ESD that can help move things along.

•No I hadn't thought of that. How do I find my representative and what do I tell them?

•Go to leg.wa.gov and use their district finder to locate your rep. Explain your situation and ask them to contact ESD on your behalf. They often get faster responses than regular claimants.

I keep seeing people mention that Claimyr thing. Has anyone else actually used it? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. My identity verification has been stuck for 3 weeks.

•Yes! I used it last week for my identity verification issue. Took about 45 minutes total and I was talking to an ESD agent. They were able to clear up my ID.me problem right away. Honestly wish I'd known about it sooner instead of wasting weeks calling myself.

•Same here - used it for a different issue but it worked great. The whole process was super smooth and professional.

•Ok you guys convinced me. Going to check out that video demo and see if it's worth trying.

Try calling the Tacoma office directly instead of the main number. Sometimes the regional offices are less busy. The number is 253-274-2087. Not sure if they can help with all issues but worth a shot.

•Do you know if other regional offices have direct numbers too? I'm closer to Spokane.

•I think so but I don't have them memorized. Try googling 'Washington ESD regional office phone numbers' - there should be a list somewhere on their website.

The callback feature on their website is completely useless. I've requested callbacks 4 times over the past 2 weeks and never got a single call back. Don't waste your time with that option.

•agreed, the callback thing is a joke. i think they just ignore those requests

•Good to know - I was thinking about trying that next but I'll skip it now.

What exactly is your claim flagged for? Sometimes you can resolve certain issues online without having to call. Like if it's a work search requirement thing, you might be able to fix it through WorkSourceWA directly.

•It just says 'additional information needed' but doesn't specify what. That's why I need to talk to someone to find out what they actually want from me.

•That's super vague and unhelpful. Yeah you definitely need to speak to someone to get clarification on what they're looking for.

I had good luck calling right after lunch around 1pm. Seems like maybe they have more staff available then? Got through on my second try that way last week.

•Interesting timing! I always assumed morning would be best but maybe everyone else thinks that too so it's actually worse.

•Exactly - everyone calls first thing in the morning so it's slammed. Mid-day seems to have less competition.

Just wanted to update everyone - I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 30 minutes and they connected me directly to an ESD adjudicator who was able to clear up my flagged claim immediately. Turns out it was just a routine income verification that I could have handled weeks ago if I'd been able to talk to someone. Really wish I'd tried this sooner instead of wasting so much time calling myself.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! Going to try Claimyr today. Thanks for the update!

•Glad it worked out for you! It's ridiculous that we have to use third-party services just to contact our own state agencies.

•Totally agree it shouldn't be necessary, but at least there's a solution that actually works when you're stuck.

For what it's worth, I've noticed they seem to answer faster on the Spanish language line sometimes, even if you don't speak Spanish fluently. If you can handle basic conversation you might try that route - press 2 instead of 1 at the language prompt.

Sophia Miller
•That's actually not a bad strategy if you're bilingual. Probably way less call volume on that line.
0 coins
Elijah Jackson
•Exactly, and most ESD agents speak both languages anyway so they can usually help in English if needed.

The system is just completely overwhelmed and understaffed. I feel bad for the agents who do answer because they're probably dealing with hundreds of frustrated people every day. But that doesn't help us get our issues resolved any faster unfortunately.

•True, it's not the individual workers' fault. The state really needs to invest in better phone infrastructure and more staff.

•I agree the agents are probably doing their best, but I still need to get my claim fixed so I can pay my bills.

Update: Tried calling at exactly 8:00 AM like someone suggested and got through on my first try! Waited on hold for about 45 minutes but actually talked to someone. My advice is definitely be super precise with that 8 AM timing - it makes a huge difference.

•Awesome! Glad that timing trick worked for you too. It's all about beating the rush.

•Ok I'm definitely setting my alarm for 7:55 tomorrow and calling right at 8:00:00. Thanks for confirming this works!

One more option - if you're tech savvy, you can try using an auto-dialer app on your phone to keep calling repeatedly. Some people swear by this method but personally I'd rather just use something like Claimyr that does all the work for me.

•Auto-dialers work but you still have to babysit your phone all day. At least with a service like that you can go about your business and they call you back when they get through.

•Exactly - time is money and I'd rather pay someone else to deal with the hassle while I focus on job searching or other important stuff.

Has anyone tried the early morning strategy on different days of the week? I'm wondering if certain days are consistently better than others for getting through at 8 AM. I've been trying randomly but maybe there's a pattern to when they're less swamped. Also curious if anyone knows what happens if you get disconnected while on hold - do you have to start completely over or is there any way to get back in the queue?
