How do I get through to Washington ESD unemployment office - impossible to reach anyone
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks about my claim and it's literally impossible. The phone lines are always busy, I get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours, and their online messaging system hasn't gotten me any response. My weekly claim got flagged for some reason and I can't certify until I talk to someone. Bills are piling up and I'm getting desperate. Has anyone figured out how to actually get through to a real person at unemployment? What's the secret to reaching Washington ESD?

I feel your pain. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely overwhelmed right now. Try calling right at 8 AM when they open - that's your best shot at getting in the queue before the lines get completely jammed.

•I've tried that multiple times but even at 8 AM sharp I just get a busy signal or it says all representatives are busy.

•Same here, been calling at 8 AM for a week straight with no luck getting through to anyone at Washington ESD.

The trick is persistence and having multiple strategies. I finally got through last month by using redial apps and calling different Washington ESD numbers. Also try the job search requirements line sometimes - they can transfer you if it's claim related.

•What different numbers? I only know the main unemployment line.

•There's the main UI line, the job search line, and sometimes the employer tax line can help redirect you to the right department.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago and found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to Washington ESD. They handle the calling and waiting for you - you just get a callback when they reach an agent. Check out claimyr.com, they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is this legit? How much does it cost?

•Yeah it's real, they basically automate the calling process so you don't have to sit there hitting redial all day. Way easier than spending hours on hold.

•Never heard of this but honestly anything beats the current system. Washington ESD's phone situation is ridiculous.

The online messaging through SecureAccess Washington is supposed to work but I've sent three messages over the past month with zero response. It's like they don't even check those messages.

•Same experience here. The messaging system seems completely useless.

•I got one response after 6 weeks but it was just a generic form letter that didn't address my actual question.

Try calling during lunch hours like 12-1 PM. Sometimes there's less volume then. Also Wednesday mornings seem to be slightly better than Mondays when everyone's trying to call.

•Interesting tip about Wednesday mornings, I hadn't thought about timing it that way.

•lunch time actually worked for me once! Got through in about 45 minutes instead of the usual 3+ hours

This whole system is broken. We're forced to call for basic claim issues but they make it impossible to actually reach anyone. It's like they're trying to discourage people from getting help.

•That's exactly how it feels - like they want us to just give up

•The staffing shortage at Washington ESD is real but they need to find better solutions than just making people wait for hours

If your claim is flagged for adjudication, that's probably why you can't certify. You'll definitely need to speak with someone to resolve that. Keep trying the early morning calls or consider that Claimyr service someone mentioned.

•Yeah it shows 'adjudication in progress' but no details about what's being reviewed or how long it takes

•Adjudication can take weeks without agent contact. Definitely worth using any method to reach them faster.

I spent 4 hours on hold yesterday only to get disconnected right when someone picked up. Almost threw my phone across the room. This system is absolutely infuriating.

•That happened to me twice last week! So frustrating after waiting that long.

•The disconnection issue is the worst part - all that time wasted for nothing

Some people have luck with the callback feature if you can find it in the phone menu, but I've never been able to locate that option when I call.

Raúl Mora
•I don't think Washington ESD actually has a callback feature. If they do, it's well hidden.

•They used to have one during the pandemic but I think it was discontinued. Now it's just the endless hold music.

been calling for 3 weeks straight and nothing... this is insane. how are we supposed to resolve claim issues if we cant even talk to anyone?

Raúl Mora
•Right? And they expect us to certify weekly but won't let us fix issues that prevent certification.

•It's a catch-22 system designed to frustrate people into giving up on their benefits

Update: I used Claimyr again this week for a different issue and got connected in about 2 hours instead of the usual all-day wait. Definitely recommend it if you're stuck like this.

•Ok I'm convinced, going to try this Claimyr thing. Can't be worse than what I'm doing now.

•Just looked at their site, seems like it could save a lot of headache. Thanks for sharing.

Try the employer services line and ask them to transfer you. Sometimes they have shorter wait times and can route you to the right department.

Raúl Mora
•Will they actually transfer for claimant issues though?

•Hit or miss, depends on the rep you get. Some will help, others will just tell you to call the main line.

I had better luck calling the Tacoma office directly instead of the main statewide number. Still took forever but at least I got through eventually.

Raúl Mora
•Which number is that? I didn't know there were local office numbers.

Margot Quinn
•Most local offices just route to the same call center now, but worth a try I guess.

Whatever you do, don't hang up if you get put on hold. I made that mistake thinking the line was dead and had to start over completely.

•Good tip, the hold music does cut out sometimes but you're still in queue

•Yeah I learned this the hard way too. Even when it goes silent for 10+ minutes, stay on the line.

honestly at this point I'm considering just driving to an office in person. This phone situation is completely broken.

•Most offices are closed to walk-ins now or require appointments that are booked months out

•Yeah, in-person service is very limited. Phone and online are pretty much the only options.

Keep a log of your call attempts - dates, times, how long you waited. If your claim gets denied for lack of response, you'll need proof you tried to contact them.

•That's actually really good advice. I should have been documenting this whole mess.

•Definitely keep records. Washington ESD sometimes penalizes claimants for not responding when they couldn't actually reach anyone.

The system crashed on me twice while I was on hold yesterday. Not sure if it's their end or mine but this whole thing is a nightmare.

•Their phone system definitely has technical issues on top of the volume problems

•I've had the system just hang up on me multiple times mid-call. So frustrating.

Try calling from different phones if you have them available. Sometimes certain numbers get blocked or flagged for too many attempts.
0 coins
Raúl Mora
•Interesting, I didn't know they might block numbers. I've been calling from the same phone nonstop.

Ava Hernandez
•Not sure if that's actually a thing but couldn't hurt to try a different number if you have one.

Final thought - if you do get through, have all your information ready and be clear about your issue. Don't waste the opportunity with a disorganized call. Write down your questions beforehand.

Raúl Mora
•Great advice, I'll prepare a list of questions and have my claim info ready to go

•Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice. Going to try the Claimyr thing and keep attempting early morning calls.

•Hope you get it resolved soon. The adjudication issues are usually fixable once you can actually talk to someone.
