How do I contact Washington ESD unemployment - phone lines always busy
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for two weeks about my pending claim and I literally cannot get through. The phone just rings busy or I get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. I tried the main customer service line, the claims center, even the technical support number - nothing works. My weekly claim certification is coming up and I have questions about my job search requirements that I need answered. Has anyone actually managed to talk to a real person at Washington ESD recently? What's the secret to getting through?

•It's so frustrating! I feel like they just don't want to talk to us at all.

•The phone system is completely overwhelmed. I heard they only have like 50 agents for the whole state which is ridiculous.

You need to call right at 8:00 AM when they open. Set multiple alarms and have your phone ready to dial the second it hits 8. Even then it's not guaranteed but that's your best shot. Also try calling on Tuesdays or Wednesdays - Mondays and Fridays are the absolute worst.

•I tried that yesterday and still got a busy signal immediately at 8:00 AM sharp!

•Yeah it's gotten worse lately. You might need to try for several days in a row unfortunately.

I actually found something that worked for me - there's a service called Claimyr that handles the calling for you. You just enter your info and they keep calling Washington ESD until they get through, then connect you to an agent. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Wait is this legit? How much does it cost? Sounds too good to be true tbh

•I thought the same thing but desperate times ya know? It's way cheaper than taking time off work to sit on hold all day. The main thing is it actually connects you to real Washington ESD agents, not some third party.

•I've heard of this but never tried it. Did they ask for your social security number or anything sketchy?

Abigail Spencer
•Nah they don't need your SSN or any sensitive info. Just basic contact details so they can patch you through when they reach an agent.

The whole system is broken. I've been unemployed for 6 months and trying to get through to fix an issue with my claim status. They want us to look for work but won't even answer their phones to help us with our benefits. It's a joke.

•I hear you on the frustration but they are dealing with massive call volume. The pandemic really overwhelmed their systems and they're still catching up.

•That was like 3 years ago though! How long does it take to hire more phone agents?

Have you tried using the SecureAccess Washington (SAW) portal online? A lot of questions can be answered there without needing to call. You can check your claim status, submit job search activities, and even send messages to Washington ESD through the system.

Lucas Lindsey
•I checked the online portal but my specific question about standby status isn't covered there. Plus when I sent a message 2 weeks ago I never got a response.

Ruby Blake
•Yeah the message response time is terrible. For standby status questions you definitely need to talk to someone directly since those rules can be tricky.

try calling the automated line first (1-800-318-6022) to see if you can get basic info about your claim status without talking to a person

•Good idea, I'll try that today. Thanks!

I read somewhere that if you call exactly 30 minutes after they open (8:30 AM) you have better luck because the initial rush dies down a bit. Haven't tried it myself yet though.

•Interesting theory but in my experience the lines stay jammed until at least 10 AM. Worth a shot though.

•I'll try different times tomorrow and see what happens.

What's your specific issue with job search requirements? I might be able to help without you needing to call. I've been through the whole process multiple times unfortunately.

•I'm on standby status through my union but I'm not sure if I still need to do the 3 job search activities per week or if that's waived. The online info is confusing.
0 coins
Isla Fischer
•Ah standby is different - you typically don't need to do job search activities while on union standby as long as your return date is within 4 weeks. But you should definitely confirm this with Washington ESD since the rules can vary.

Ruby Blake
•That's correct for most union standby situations. The key is making sure your union filed the proper paperwork with Washington ESD about your expected return date.

I'm going to try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. At this point I'll try anything to avoid spending my entire morning on hold just to get disconnected.

•Let me know how it goes! It took about 2 hours for them to get through when I used it but that's way better than the 6+ hours I was wasting trying myself.

•Will do. Anything beats this endless calling routine.

Does anyone know if the Olympia office takes walk-ins? I'm about ready to just drive down there and wait in person.

Ruby Blake
•They stopped doing walk-ins during COVID and never brought them back. Everything has to be done by phone or online now unfortunately.

Micah Franklin
•Ugh of course they did. Thanks for letting me know before I made the drive.

I heard if you call the Spanish language line they transfer you to English speakers faster because there's less volume. Can anyone confirm this?

Anita George
•I've heard this rumor too but never tried it. Seems kind of wrong to clog up that line when you don't actually need Spanish services.

•At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. The regular system clearly doesn't work.

update: still can't get through after trying for another week. this is absolutely ridiculous

•Same here. I'm starting to think they just don't answer the phones at all.

Try calling during lunch time like 12-1 PM. I got through once around 12:30 because I think some of their staff go to lunch and the hold queue moves faster.

Lucas Lindsey
•That's actually a good point about timing. I'll try that today.

•Yeah it's counterintuitive but worked for me. Good luck!

Just wanted to follow up - I used Claimyr again last week for a different issue and it worked perfectly. Got connected to an agent in about 90 minutes and resolved my adjudication question. Honestly wish I'd found this service months ago.

•Thanks for the update! I tried it yesterday and they're calling for me now. Way less stressful than doing it myself.

•How does the callback work exactly? Do they call you when they get through to Washington ESD?
0 coins
Abigail Spencer
•Yeah exactly. They keep calling Washington ESD and when they finally get through to an agent, they call you and connect you directly to the agent. You never have to sit on hold yourself.

I've been calling since 7 AM every day this week (I know they don't open till 8 but I keep trying). Got through ONCE and then got disconnected while they were transferring me to the right department. Almost threw my phone out the window.

has anyone tried emailing their representatives? maybe if enough of us complain about the phone system they'll actually do something about it

•I contacted my state senator's office and they did help me get through to Washington ESD faster. Worth a try if you're really stuck.

The worst part is not knowing if your claim is progressing or if there's some issue you need to fix. The uncertainty is almost worse than just being denied.

Lucas Lindsey
•Exactly! I just want to know what's happening with my case.

•Check your online account every few days. Sometimes status changes show up there before anyone calls you.

I finally got through using a different strategy - I called the WorkSourceWA number and asked them to transfer me to Washington ESD. It worked! Took about 45 minutes total.

Lucas Lindsey
•Wait really? What's the WorkSourceWA number? I'll try that right now.

Sophie Footman
•It's 1-877-872-5627. Tell them you need help with your unemployment claim and they should be able to transfer you. No guarantee but worth a shot.

Update: Thanks everyone for all the suggestions! I ended up using Claimyr like several people recommended and finally got through to resolve my standby status question. Turns out I don't need to do job search activities while I'm waiting for my union callback. Could have saved weeks of stress if I'd been able to reach them sooner but at least it's sorted now!

•Glad it worked out! That's exactly the kind of question that's impossible to answer without talking to an actual person.

I've been having the same exact problem for the past month! The phone system is completely broken. I tried calling at 8:00 AM sharp every day this week and either get a busy signal immediately or sit on hold for 3+ hours just to get disconnected. It's incredibly frustrating when you have legitimate questions about your claim but can't reach anyone. The online portal doesn't cover specific situations like standby status or adjudication issues. At this point I'm seriously considering that Claimyr service people have mentioned - spending money to get through to a phone system I'm already entitled to use feels wrong, but I'm running out of options.
