How to talk to unemployment - Washington ESD phone lines always busy
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks about my claim status and I can't get through to anyone. Every time I call the main number I either get a busy signal or sit on hold for 3+ hours before getting disconnected. My weekly claims are going through but there's an issue with my job separation that needs to be resolved and I can't figure out how to actually talk to a human being. Has anyone found a way to actually get through to Washington ESD lately? This is so frustrating.

•It's ridiculous that they make it this hard to reach them when we need help with our claims

•The phone system is completely overwhelmed. Try calling right when they open at 8am

I had success calling the Washington ESD main line at 800-318-6022 but you need to call exactly at 8:00 AM when they open. Even then it took me about 45 minutes on hold. The trick is to stay on the line no matter what - don't hang up even if it seems like nothing is happening.

•I tried that but got disconnected after an hour. Should I keep trying the same number?

•Yes, that's still the best option. Sometimes you get lucky and get through faster

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have this system that calls for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical at first but it worked within like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you.

•Wait is this legit? I don't want to get scammed trying to reach unemployment

Before trying any third-party services, make sure you've exhausted all the official Washington ESD contact methods. You can also try reaching out through their secure messaging system on your online account, though response times are slow. For job separation issues specifically, sometimes they'll resolve it automatically if you submit the required documentation through the online portal.

•I did submit documents but it's been 3 weeks with no response. That's why I need to talk to someone

•In that case yeah you definitely need to speak with an adjudicator. The phone is unfortunately your best bet

This is exactly why the unemployment system is broken. They require us to contact them for everything but make it impossible to actually reach anyone. I spent literally 6 hours on the phone yesterday and got nowhere.

•I feel your pain. It's like they designed the system to discourage people from getting help

•At least I'm not the only one dealing with this nightmare

Here are some specific tips that have worked for me: 1) Call at exactly 8:00 AM or 1:00 PM when they have fresh agents coming on shift 2) Use the callback option if available rather than staying on hold 3) Have your Social Security number and claim details ready before you call 4) If you get disconnected, call back immediately - sometimes you'll get through faster the second time

•I didn't know about the 1 PM thing. I'll try that today

•The callback option never works for me, I always end up waiting anyway

Try calling the employer services line instead of the claimant line. Sometimes they can transfer you and you'll get through faster.

•What's that number? I'm willing to try anything at this point

•It's 855-887-1159 but they might just tell you to call the main line anyway

Just wanted to follow up - I used Claimyr again this week for a different issue and got connected in under 15 minutes. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck in phone hell like I was.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already broke from being unemployed

•It's totally worth it when you consider how much time you're wasting trying to call yourself. Plus they handle all the frustration for you

I managed to get through last week by calling on my lunch break around 12:30. Took about 90 minutes but I eventually got connected to someone who could help with my adjudication issue.

•That gives me hope. What did you need help with if you don't mind me asking?

•Similar to your situation - job separation issue that was holding up my benefits. The agent was actually really helpful once I got through

Pro tip: if you get the busy signal, immediately hit redial. Sometimes you'll get through on the 2nd or 3rd try. Also make sure you're calling from a landline if possible - cell phones seem to get dropped more often.

Miguel Herrera
•I don't have a landline but I'll try the redial trick

•Who has a landline anymore lol but good tip about the redial

This might sound crazy but I had luck calling the Spanish language line and asking to be transferred to English. The wait time was way shorter.

Miguel Herrera
•That's actually brilliant. What's that number?

Malik Johnson
•Same main number but press 2 for Spanish instead of 1 for English. Then just explain you need English help

I keep seeing people mention this Claimyr thing. Is it actually legit or is this some kind of spam?

•It's totally legit. I was skeptical too but it really works. Check out their video demo if you want to see how it works

The whole system is a joke. I've been trying to reach someone for a month about an overpayment notice and can't get through. Meanwhile they're threatening to garnish my wages.

Miguel Herrera
•Wow that's terrible. Have you tried the appeals process?

•For overpayment issues you really need to speak with someone ASAP. Try the Claimyr service people mentioned

I work in HR and deal with Washington ESD regularly. The phone system has been completely overwhelmed since 2020 and they haven't fixed it. Your best bet is really to call right when they open or use one of those callback services if you can afford it.

•Good to know it's not just me. This is so frustrating when you need help with your claim

•Trust me, it's frustrating for employers too. We can't get through to them either when we need to respond to claims

UPDATE: I finally got through using the Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 25 minutes and I was connected to an actual Washington ESD agent who helped resolve my job separation issue. Definitely recommend it if you're stuck like I was.

For anyone still struggling, try calling the WorkSource offices in your area. Sometimes they can help you get connected or at least give you better guidance on when to call.

Miguel Herrera
•I didn't think of that. Do they have direct lines to Washington ESD?
0 coins
Anastasia Sokolov
•Not direct lines but they work closely with ESD and might have better insider knowledge on timing

The fact that we need to use third-party services just to contact our own state unemployment office is absolutely ridiculous. But at this point I'll try anything.
