Can't get through to Washington ESD unemployment - phone lines always busy
I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for over two weeks now and I literally cannot get through to anyone. I call first thing at 8am when they open and get the busy signal. I've tried calling at different times throughout the day but it's always the same - either busy or I sit on hold for hours before getting disconnected. My weekly claim got flagged for some reason and now I can't certify online anymore. The website just says to call but calling is impossible! This is so frustrating because I need to resolve this to keep getting my benefits. Has anyone actually managed to talk to a real person at Washington ESD recently? What's the secret?

OMG same here!! I've been calling for 3 weeks straight and nothing. The hold music just plays forever and then click - disconnected. My claim is stuck in adjudication and I have no idea why.

•It's ridiculous that they expect us to resolve issues by phone when you literally can't get through to anyone!

•I heard they only have like 50 phone lines for the entire state which is insane

The phone system is definitely overwhelmed. Try calling right at 8:00 AM sharp when they open - that's your best bet. Also make sure you're calling the correct number for your specific issue. There are different lines for different types of problems.

•I've tried the 8am thing multiple times but still can't get through. Which number should I be calling for a flagged weekly claim?

•For weekly claim issues, use the main customer service line. But honestly, even that's hit or miss right now.

I actually found something that worked for me - there's this service called Claimyr that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. I was skeptical at first but I was desperate. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of frustration.

•Wait, how does that work exactly? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

•Yeah basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they reach an agent. Way better than sitting there for hours hitting redial.

•That sounds too good to be true... what's the catch?

I'm at the point where I might try anything. The automated system keeps telling me to call but then the phone system is broken. It's like they designed it to be impossible on purpose.

•I swear they did design it that way. Make it so hard that people just give up on their claims.

•That's probably not intentional, just underfunded and understaffed. But the result is the same - claimants can't get help when they need it.

Has anyone tried going to a WorkSource office in person? I know they're supposed to help with unemployment issues too.

•I thought about that but the closest one to me is like 45 minutes away and I'm not sure they can actually fix claim issues there.

•I went to WorkSource last month for something else and they said they can't access individual claim details, only help with general questions.

The whole system is broken. I've been unemployed for 6 weeks and still haven't received a single payment because I can't get through to resolve the adjudication issue. Meanwhile bills keep coming.

•Same boat here. It's so stressful not knowing when or if you'll get your benefits.

•Have you tried the secure messaging system on your ESD account? Sometimes that works better than calling.

•I sent a message 2 weeks ago and no response yet. They say it takes 7-10 business days but apparently that's not accurate either.

I'm starting to think that Claimyr thing might be worth trying. If they can actually get me connected to someone at Washington ESD, it would be worth it just to get my claim unstuck.

•I definitely recommend it. The peace of mind of knowing someone is actually working on getting you through is huge.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already not getting benefits...

NeonNebula
•I honestly don't remember the exact cost but it was way less than I expected. And compared to missing weeks of benefits while trying to get through on my own, it paid for itself.

For what it's worth, I finally got through last week after calling 147 times (yes I counted). The agent was super helpful once I actually reached someone. The problem is just getting to that point.

•147 times?! That's insane. How long did that take you?

•About 3 days of non-stop calling during business hours. My thumb was sore from hitting redial so much lol

•That's dedication! What did you find out about your claim?

The phone situation is definitely worse now than it was pre-pandemic. I used to be able to get through within an hour or two, now it's basically impossible.

•Yeah I think they cut staff but didn't reduce the call volume. Recipe for disaster.

•The call volume is definitely higher than their capacity to handle it. They really need to hire more agents or improve the online systems.

Pro tip: if you do get through to someone, get their direct extension if possible. Sometimes agents will give you a way to reach them directly for follow-up questions.

Natasha Orlova
•That's good to know! I'll ask for that if I ever actually reach someone.

Zara Shah
•Most agents aren't allowed to give out direct extensions anymore unfortunately. Policy changed a few years ago.

I've been tracking my call attempts in a spreadsheet - 89 calls over 2 weeks with zero success. This is beyond ridiculous.

•A spreadsheet?? You're more organized than me but that's so depressing to see it laid out like that.

•Yeah it is pretty depressing. But at least I have documentation if I need to escalate this somehow.

Has anyone tried contacting their state representative about this? Seems like someone should be held accountable for such a broken system.

•I thought about that but wasn't sure if they actually help with individual cases or just policy stuff.

•My rep's office helped me with a Social Security issue once, so they might be able to help with ESD too.

•Worth a shot at this point. Can't be worse than the current situation.

The irony is that they require you to actively look for work and report it weekly, but when their own system breaks down, there's no accountability or timeline for fixes.

•So true! They demand we follow all these rules but can't provide basic customer service.

•And if we miss a weekly claim deadline, we're out of luck. But they can take weeks to fix their mistakes.

Update: I tried the Claimyr service that someone mentioned earlier and actually got connected to a Washington ESD agent within 2 hours! Agent was able to clear up the flag on my account. Definitely recommend if you're stuck like I was.

Natasha Orlova
•That's amazing! I'm definitely going to look into that. Two hours vs weeks of trying on my own is a no-brainer.

Yuki Nakamura
•Did they say what caused the flag on your account?

•It was some kind of identity verification issue that should have been resolved automatically but got stuck in the system. Agent fixed it in like 5 minutes once we were connected.

For anyone still struggling - I've found that Tuesday and Wednesday mornings seem to have slightly better success rates than Mondays and Fridays. Still terrible odds but marginally better.

•Makes sense that Mondays and Fridays would be worse. More people probably calling on those days.

The whole situation makes me appreciate how much we rely on these systems working properly. When they break down, people's lives get turned upside down.

Jamal Thompson
•Exactly. This isn't just an inconvenience - people have rent and groceries to pay for.

•That's what's so frustrating. The system is supposed to be a safety net but when you can't access it, you're left hanging.

I finally got my issue resolved through the messaging system after 3 weeks of waiting. Not ideal but at least it eventually worked. Sometimes patience is the only option.

CosmicCadet
•Three weeks though... that's a long time to wait when you need benefits to pay bills.

•Oh absolutely. I had to borrow money from family to get by. Not everyone has that option though.

Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and tips. This thread has been more helpful than anything on the official Washington ESD website. At least we know we're not alone in this struggle!
