How much is unemployment tax taken out of Washington ESD benefits?

Just got approved for unemployment after being laid off from my warehouse job last month. My weekly benefit amount shows $467 but I want to know how much tax will be taken out. I heard Washington ESD automatically withholds federal taxes but I'm not sure about the percentage. Should I have them take taxes out now or just pay at the end of the year? Don't want to get hit with a huge tax bill later.

Washington ESD will withhold 10% for federal taxes if you request it when you file your weekly claims. There's no state income tax in Washington so you don't have to worry about that. You can change your withholding election anytime through your online account.

So if I get $467 weekly they'd take out $46.70 for taxes? That doesn't seem like enough honestly.

The 10% is just what they offer for withholding. Depending on your total income for the year you might owe more or less when you file your return.

0 coins

i didn't have any taxes taken out and ended up owing like $800 when i filed. definitely have them withhold the 10% its easier than trying to save money yourself

0 coins

Yikes that's exactly what I'm worried about. How long were you on unemployment?

0 coins

about 4 months, got maybe $7,000 total in benefits. the tax hit sucked

Just so you know, unemployment benefits are considered taxable income at the federal level. If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to set up tax withholding, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNdC7zQ that shows how it works. Made it way easier for me to get my withholding sorted out.

0 coins

Never heard of that but definitely going to check it out. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Seems like something I'd have to pay for.

0 coins

It's worth it if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

The 10% federal withholding is optional but I'd recommend it. You can elect to have it withheld when you're filing your weekly claims online. Just log into your Washington ESD account and look for the tax withholding option. It's under the payment settings section.

0 coins

Perfect, I'll do that when I file my claim this week. Thanks for the specific instructions.

0 coins

Wait where exactly is that option? I've been looking all over my account and can't find it.

0 coins

When you're filing your weekly claim there should be a section about tax withholding near the end before you submit. If you can't find it try calling.

DONT FORGET unemployment is taxable income! I learned this the hard way my first time on benefits. Had to pay back like $600 because I spent all my benefit money and didn't save for taxes.

0 coins

That's rough. So even with the 10% withholding you still owed money?

0 coins

No that was when I didn't have anything withheld at all. Now I always do the 10% withholding just to be safe.

0 coins

just a heads up the 10% might not be enough depending on your tax bracket. if you made good money before unemployment you might want to set aside extra

0 coins

I was making about $55k before I got laid off. Think 10% will be enough?

0 coins

probably but you might want to talk to a tax person to be sure. everyone's situation is different

You'll get a 1099-G form from Washington ESD at the end of the year showing how much you received in benefits. That's what you'll need to report on your tax return. Keep track of any taxes that were withheld too.

0 coins

Good to know about the 1099-G. When do they usually send those out?

0 coins

Usually by the end of January. You can also access it online through your Washington ESD account.

I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked. Got through to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hours of being on hold. Was able to set up my tax withholding and ask about my job search requirements at the same time.

0 coins

That's exactly what I need to do. Did you have any issues with the service?

0 coins

Nope worked exactly like they showed in the demo. Way less stressful than trying to call on my own.

0 coins

Be careful about the tax withholding because it's not automatic. You have to actually elect it when you file your weekly claims. I forgot to do it for my first few weeks and had to call to get it changed.

0 coins

Can you change it retroactively or do you just have to deal with owing more at tax time?

0 coins

You can change it going forward but they won't go back and withhold from previous payments. So I had to save extra money to cover those weeks.

0 coins

honestly just have them take the 10% out its not that much money and youll thank yourself at tax time. better safe than sorry with the IRS

0 coins

Yeah that seems like the smart move. Rather get a small refund than owe a bunch of money.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment twice and both times I had the 10% withheld. First time I got a small refund, second time I owed like $50. Much better than trying to save the money yourself when you're already tight on cash.

0 coins

That's a good point about being tight on cash. Hard to save money when you're living on unemployment.

0 coins

Exactly! I tried to save my own tax money the first time and ended up spending it on groceries and rent.

0 coins

Make sure you understand that unemployment benefits reduce your take-home pay compared to your regular job, and then taxes reduce it even more. Budget accordingly because that $467 becomes like $420 after withholding.

0 coins

Yeah I'm definitely going to have to adjust my budget. This is way less than what I was making before.

0 coins

Welcome to unemployment life. It's rough but at least it's something while you look for work.

0 coins

does anyone know if the tax withholding applies to the extra $25 weekly from the state supplement or just the regular UI benefits?

0 coins

The withholding applies to your total weekly benefit amount, including any state supplements or dependency allowances.

0 coins

thanks, that makes sense. didn't want to get surprised later

0 coins

Pro tip: if you have the taxes withheld and you end up getting a job quickly, you might get a refund when you file. If you don't have taxes withheld and stay on unemployment for a while, you'll definitely owe money.

0 coins

That's a good way to think about it. Better to have too much taken out than not enough.

0 coins

I'm in a similar situation and ended up using Claimyr to talk to someone at Washington ESD about this exact question. The agent explained that the 10% is just an estimate and your actual tax liability depends on your total income for the year. They recommended having it withheld if you're unsure.

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds like Claimyr is worth trying if I need to call again.

0 coins

Definitely saved me hours of trying to get through on my own. Their video demo explains exactly how it works.

0 coins

just remember you still have to file a tax return even if you had taxes withheld from your unemployment. dont make the mistake of thinking the withholding takes care of everything

0 coins

Good point. I'll make sure to file my return and include the 1099-G from Washington ESD.

0 coins

One more thing - if you move to a different state while on unemployment, you might have to deal with that state's income tax too. Washington doesn't have state income tax but other states do.

0 coins

Not planning to move but that's good to know. This unemployment stuff is more complicated than I thought.

0 coins

Yeah there's a lot of little details they don't tell you upfront. The tax thing catches a lot of people off guard.

0 coins

Thanks for posting this question OP. I'm in the same boat and this thread has been super helpful. Definitely going to elect the 10% tax withholding when I file my claim this week.

0 coins

Glad it helped! I feel much better about the whole tax situation now.
