How much does unemployment pay in Washington state - confused about weekly benefit amount
I just got laid off from my restaurant job last week and I'm trying to figure out how much I can expect from Washington ESD unemployment benefits. I was making about $18/hour working around 35-40 hours a week. I've never filed for unemployment before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me with all the calculations. Does anyone know roughly what the weekly benefit amount would be? I need to know so I can budget for rent and bills while I look for another job.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $999 and minimum is $295. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then you get about 50% of that amount. So if you made around $18k in your highest quarter, you'd probably get somewhere in the $300-400 range per week.

•That's helpful, thank you! Do you know how they determine which quarters count as the base period?

•Your base period is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2025, they'd look at quarters from January 2024 through September 2024.

i think mine was like $380 a week when i got laid off from starbucks last year. made about the same as you hourly wise. but it took forever for washington esd to process my claim

•How long did it take? I'm worried about the wait time since I need to pay rent.

•took like 3 weeks for my first payment but that was because they had to verify my identity or something

The exact calculation can be tricky because Washington ESD looks at all your wages from covered employers in your base period. If you had any other jobs or income during those quarters, that affects your weekly benefit amount too. You can use the online benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website, but honestly it's easier to just apply and let them tell you what you qualify for.

•I did try the calculator but got confused about which wages to include. I had a brief second job last summer but only for like 2 months.

•Include all W-2 wages from that time period. Even short-term jobs count if they were during your base period quarters.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim status or ask questions about your benefit amount, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that one of those paid services? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's worth it if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through on my own.

•I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully my claim goes through smoothly.

restaurant workers often qualify for decent benefits because of tip reporting. make sure you reported all your tips properly on your taxes because washington esd will use that to calculate your base period wages

•Oh good point! I always reported my tips accurately so that should help my benefit amount.

Just remember you have to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting paid, even if your initial claim is still processing. Don't skip weeks or you'll lose those payments permanently.

•Good to know! Do I start filing weekly claims right away or wait until my claim is approved?

•Start filing them as soon as Washington ESD tells you to, usually right after you submit your initial application.

The Washington ESD system is SO slow right now. I've been waiting 2 weeks just to get my monetary determination letter. At least when you do get approved, they backpay you to your filing date.

•That's reassuring about the backpay. I was worried about losing money for the waiting period.

•yeah they backpay everything once approved, just gotta be patient which sucks when you need money now

Also keep in mind you'll need to do job search activities and report them on your weekly claims. For 2025, Washington requires 3 job search activities per week. That includes applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, etc.

Connor Byrne
•3 per week seems like a lot. What counts as a job search activity exactly?

•Job applications, interviews, networking events, career workshops, creating/updating your resume, contacting employers directly. Washington ESD has a full list on their website.

Don't forget about taxes! Washington doesn't tax unemployment benefits but federal taxes still apply. You can choose to have 10% withheld or pay quarterly estimated taxes.

Connor Byrne
•Ugh, I didn't think about taxes. Should I have them withhold the 10%?

•I'd recommend it unless you're good about saving money for tax time. Owing a bunch in April is never fun.

The whole Washington ESD system is a nightmare to navigate. Half the time their website doesn't work and when you finally get through on the phone they transfer you 3 times before hanging up on you.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Got tired of wasting entire days trying to reach someone at Washington ESD.

•Maybe I should look into that. I've been calling for a week straight with no luck.

just applied last week too and still waiting. this whole process is stressful when you don't know how much money is coming or when

For budgeting purposes, I'd estimate conservatively. Even if you qualify for $400/week, plan for less in case there are delays or issues with your claim. Washington ESD can be unpredictable with processing times.

•Good advice. I'm already looking at ways to cut expenses just in case.

Make sure you keep track of all your job search activities from day one. Washington ESD sometimes audits claims and asks for documentation going back months.

•Smart move. Keep records of company names, dates, job titles, and how you searched (online, in person, etc.).

Restaurant industry has been rough lately. Lots of us have had to file for unemployment. At least Washington's benefits are better than most states.

•Yeah, it's been tough. Hoping to find something soon but unemployment will help bridge the gap.

I had an issue where Washington ESD said I didn't report my work search activities correctly and held up my payments for 3 weeks. Finally got it sorted out with Claimyr's help - they got me through to someone who actually looked at my account instead of just reading a script.

•That sounds frustrating! Glad you got it resolved. I'll definitely keep Claimyr in mind if I run into problems.

expect the first payment to take 2-3 weeks minimum. washington esd has to verify everything first

•Okay, I'll plan accordingly. At least I know what to expect now.

One more thing - if you had any severance pay or vacation payout, that might affect when your benefits start. Washington ESD considers that as wages and may delay your first payment accordingly.
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•I didn't get any severance, just my final paycheck. Should be straightforward then.
0 coins
Yara Abboud
•That should make things easier. Your claim should process more smoothly without severance complications.

Summary for OP: Based on your wages, expect roughly $300-400/week. File weekly claims immediately. Do 3 job searches per week. First payment takes 2-3 weeks. Keep detailed records of everything. And don't hesitate to get help if you run into issues - whether through WorkSource or services like Claimyr if you can't reach Washington ESD directly.

•Perfect summary! I feel much more prepared now. Really appreciate everyone's help.
