How much unemployment money will I get from Washington ESD - need to know weekly benefit amount
I just got laid off from my retail job after working there for 8 months and I'm trying to figure out how much I'll get in unemployment benefits. I was making $18/hour working about 35 hours a week. I've never filed for unemployment before so I have no idea how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount. Does anyone know how they figure out what you get paid? I need to know so I can budget for rent and bills while I'm looking for work.

Washington ESD uses your highest earning quarter from the past 18 months to calculate your weekly benefit amount (WBA). They take that quarter's earnings and divide by 26. So if your highest quarter was $8,100, you'd get about $311 per week. There's also a minimum of $295 and maximum of $999 for 2025.

•That's helpful! How do I know what my highest quarter was? I started this job in March 2024 so I'm not sure if I have enough work history.

•You need earnings in at least 2 quarters of your base period. Since you worked 8 months, you should qualify. Check your wage statement when you file your claim to see your quarterly earnings.

Just filed my claim last week and was surprised by the amount! Washington ESD also looks at your total base period wages. If you don't have enough in the standard base period, they might use the alternate base period which includes more recent quarters.

•What's the difference between standard and alternate base period? This is all so confusing.

•Standard uses quarters 2-5 before you file. Alternate uses quarters 1-4 before you file. So it includes more recent work if you just started a job recently like you did.

I was getting so frustrated trying to call Washington ESD to ask about my benefit calculation. Kept getting busy signals and getting hung up on after waiting forever. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that got me through to an actual agent who explained everything. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service. How does it work exactly? I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for days.

•Basically they handle the calling for you and get you connected to an agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

•Sounds sketchy to me. Why would you need a service to make a phone call?

your weekly amount depends on what you made but dont expect much. i got $347 a week which barely covers my rent. better than nothing i guess but unemployment doesnt pay well

•Yeah I'm worried it won't be enough. Was hoping it would be closer to what I was making at work.

•UI is only meant to replace part of your income, not all of it. That's why they encourage you to keep looking for work actively.

The system is rigged anyway. They make it so complicated to figure out what you'll get and then half the time they deny your claim for some BS reason. I've been fighting an adjudication for 6 weeks now over 'job separation issues' even though I got laid off through no fault of my own.

•Ugh that's awful. What kind of job separation issues are they claiming?

•They think I quit instead of getting laid off even though I have the layoff letter. Washington ESD is just looking for reasons to deny claims.

•You should definitely appeal if you have documentation. Don't let them get away with that.

For someone who worked 8 months at $18/hr for 35 hours, you're probably looking at around $400-450 per week if I had to guess. But the exact amount depends on when you worked and how your earnings were distributed across quarters.

•That would actually be pretty decent! Hopefully you're right about that estimate.

•Don't count on it being that high. Washington ESD always finds ways to pay less than you expect.

I used that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked great. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling all day. The agent walked me through my benefit calculation and explained why my amount was what it was.

•How much does that service cost? I might try it if it's not too expensive.

•It's worth it just to avoid the headache of trying to get through on your own. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

Make sure you file your claim ASAP because there's a waiting week before you start getting paid. And you have to do job search activities every week to keep getting benefits - usually 3 job contacts per week minimum.

•What counts as job search activities? Just applying for jobs online?

•Job applications, networking events, job fairs, informational interviews. Keep detailed records because Washington ESD audits job search logs randomly.

•And make sure you register with WorkSource! That's required too and a lot of people forget about it.

honestly the whole system is set up to discourage people from claiming benefits. they make it confusing on purpose so people give up. stick with it though because you paid into the system and deserve those benefits

•So true! The application process alone is intimidating enough to scare people away.

•That's why services like Claimyr exist - to help people navigate the bureaucracy and actually get the help they're entitled to.

Your benefit amount will be posted in your eServices account once your claim is processed. Usually takes 2-3 weeks to get your first payment if there are no issues with your claim.

•2-3 weeks?! I was hoping to get money sooner than that. I have bills due next week.

•Unfortunately that's normal processing time. You might want to look into emergency assistance programs while you wait.

•And remember you won't get paid for the first week anyway due to the waiting week requirement.

I think Washington ESD has a benefit calculator on their website but I couldn't get it to work properly. Kept giving me error messages. Typical government website functionality.

•Yeah their website is terrible. Half the links don't work and it crashes constantly.

•Which is another reason why talking to an actual agent is so important. Too bad they make it nearly impossible to reach them by phone.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but don't forget about the tax implications when budgeting.

NeonNebula
•Oh great, another thing to worry about. How much do they typically withhold for taxes?
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•I think it's 10% federal withholding. Washington doesn't have state income tax so that's not an issue here.

The formula is pretty straightforward once you understand it. Take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, and that's your weekly benefit amount. But there are caps so you won't get more than $999 per week even if you were making bank.

•What's the minimum you can get? I only worked part-time so I'm worried I won't qualify for much.

Miguel Ortiz
•Minimum is $295 per week for 2025. As long as you meet the earnings requirements you'll get at least that much.

Pro tip: if you're not sure about your benefit amount, try calling Washington ESD early in the morning or late in the evening. Those seem to be the best times to actually get through to someone. Or use that Claimyr service if you don't want to deal with the phone tag.
