How long do u have to be at a job to get unemployment benefits in Washington?

so i just started a new job about 2 months ago but honestly its not working out and im thinking about quitting. my friend said you need to work somewhere for like 6 months or a year before you can collect unemployment but i dont know if thats true?? does anyone know the actual rule for washington state? i really need to know before i make any decisions here

It's not about how long you work at ONE job, it's about your total earnings over what's called the 'base period.' Washington ESD looks at the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. You need to have earned at least $3,850 during your base period AND earned at least 680 hours of work OR earned wages in at least 2 quarters.

wait so its not just about this current job? they look at all my previous work too?

0 coins

Exactly! If you worked other jobs in the past year or so, those earnings count toward your eligibility.

Also just FYI - if you quit your job voluntarily, you probably won't qualify for unemployment unless you have 'good cause.' Washington ESD is pretty strict about that. You'd need to be fired or laid off to get benefits in most cases.

0 coins

oh crap i didnt think about that part. what counts as good cause?

0 coins

Things like unsafe working conditions, harassment, significant changes to your job duties, or if your employer violates labor laws. But just not liking the job usually doesn't qualify.

0 coins

yeah i quit my last job because my boss was awful and they still denied my claim. had to appeal and everything

I had a similar situation last year where I needed to check my work history to see if I qualified. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone for weeks though - their lines are always busy. Eventually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered about eligibility.

0 coins

is that legit? never heard of using a service to call unemployment

0 coins

Yeah it's real, they basically keep calling until they get you connected to an actual person at Washington ESD. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting hung up on.

0 coins

just looked this up and the minimum wage requirement is actually higher now - its $4,320 for 2025. but yeah the 680 hours thing is still the same

0 coins

Thanks for the update! The amounts do change each year based on average wages in the state.

Honestly the whole system is confusing as hell. I worked part time for 8 months and they said I didn't qualify because I didn't have enough hours even though I made decent money. Makes no sense to me.

0 coins

Part-time work can be tricky because you need either the 680 hours OR wages in 2 different quarters. If all your wages were in just one quarter, that might be why you didn't qualify.

0 coins

ohhhh that actually makes sense now. wish someone had explained that when i applied

0 coins

OP - before you do anything drastic, check your work history on the Washington ESD website. You can see your reported wages and hours to get an idea if you'd qualify. Better to know for sure before making any decisions about quitting.

0 coins

good idea, didnt know i could check that online

0 coins

Yeah just log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look under employment security. Shows all the wages employers reported for you.

0 coins

wait are you thinking about quitting because of the work environment or just because you dont like it? because theres a big difference in terms of unemployment eligibility

0 coins

its mostly just not what i expected and the pay is lower than they said. nothing like unsafe or anything

0 coins

Unfortunately that probably wouldn't qualify as good cause for quitting. You'd likely be disqualified from benefits.

0 coins

I've been working for 15 years and still get confused by unemployment rules lol. But the quarter thing is key - they dont just look at your current job

0 coins

same! i thought it was just about your last job until i had to file a claim

0 coins

To be clear about the timeline: your base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. So if you filed today (January 2025), they'd look at January-December 2024. If you haven't worked much in 2024, you might not qualify regardless of your current job.

0 coins

i worked most of 2024 at my previous job so that should help right?

0 coins

Yes! That's exactly what would count toward your eligibility. The current 2-month job is just extra.

0 coins

Just remember even if you qualify based on work history, voluntarily quitting usually disqualifies you. You'd need to be terminated or have documented good cause to quit.

0 coins

so basically i should try to stick it out or find a way to get fired instead of quitting?

0 coins

I can't advise getting yourself fired on purpose, but I'd definitely recommend exploring other options before quitting if you're relying on unemployment benefits.

If you do end up needing to contact Washington ESD about eligibility or any other questions, seriously consider using Claimyr. I wasted so many hours trying to get through on my own. Their service connects you directly to agents and saves tons of time and frustration.

0 coins

how much does something like that cost though?

0 coins

I think it's worth it just for the time saved, but check their website for current rates. Way cheaper than taking unpaid time off work to sit on hold all day.

0 coins

honestly the unemployment system in this state is so backed up that even if you qualify it takes forever to get benefits. just something to keep in mind

0 coins

this is so true. took 6 weeks to get my first payment last time

0 coins

thanks everyone this has been really helpful. sounds like i need to check my wage history first and then really think about whether i want to quit knowing i probably wont get unemployment

0 coins

Smart approach! Better to make an informed decision with all the facts.

0 coins

Good luck whatever you decide. Sometimes it's worth sticking out a job you don't love if you need the income stability.

0 coins

just wanted to add that if your employer misrepresented the pay during hiring that MIGHT be considered good cause but youd need documentation. like if they put one salary in writing then paid you less

0 coins

they did tell me one thing in the interview but i dont have it in writing unfortunately

0 coins

Without documentation it would be hard to prove. Washington ESD usually needs solid evidence for good cause determinations.

0 coins

pro tip: if you do decide to apply for unemployment later, keep detailed records of everything. job search activities, any contact with employers, etc. they require a lot of documentation

0 coins

yes this! i got in trouble for not keeping good enough records of my job searches

0 coins

still think the whole system is overly complicated but at least now i understand the quarters thing better. wish they explained this stuff more clearly on their website

0 coins

Agreed, the Washington ESD website could definitely be more user-friendly with explanations.

0 coins

Final thought - if you do need to contact Washington ESD for any reason (checking eligibility, asking about good cause, etc.), don't waste weeks trying to get through on your own. Services like Claimyr exist because the phone system is so overloaded. Sometimes it's worth paying a little to actually get answers.

0 coins

yeah that makes sense. thanks for all the advice everyone!

0 coins

Hope it works out for you OP. Remember you can always look for another job while you're still employed at this one. Might be better than quitting and hoping for unemployment.

0 coins

true, probably the safest option. appreciate everyone taking time to help!

0 coins

good luck with whatever you decide!
