How long do you have to be at a job before you can collect unemployment in Washington?
I just started a new job about 6 weeks ago but I'm already having serious issues with my supervisor and I'm worried I might get fired or need to quit. Before I make any decisions, I need to know - how long do you have to work at a job before you're eligible for unemployment benefits in Washington? I've heard different things from people and I can't find a clear answer on the Washington ESD website. My last job was over a year ago so I'm not sure if that matters. Really stressed about this situation and need to know my options.

In Washington, it's not about how long you work at one specific job. What matters is your total earnings during your 'base year' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. You need to have earned at least $3,850 during your base year to qualify for unemployment benefits.

•So if I worked for like 8 months last year but then was unemployed until 6 weeks ago, would my earnings from last year still count?

Jordan Walker
•Yes, those earnings would likely be included in your base year calculation. The Washington ESD looks at your total covered wages, not just your most recent job.

wait i thought you had to work at least 3 months somewhere to get unemployment?? that's what my friend told me when she got laid off

•That's a common misconception. There's no minimum time requirement at a single employer. It's all about your total earnings during the base year period.

•oh wow I had no idea! thanks for clearing that up

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my own claim issues and it's absolutely impossible. The phone lines are always busy and when you do get through, they hang up on you after being on hold forever. Has anyone found a way to actually reach a human being there?

•I actually discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents by phone. They have this system that handles all the calling and waiting for you. I used it last month when I was stuck in adjudication hell and it worked great. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they even have a video demo showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

Just to clarify the eligibility requirements - you need both the minimum earnings ($3,850 in base year) AND you need to have worked in at least two quarters during your base year. Also, if you quit voluntarily, you might face disqualification unless you can prove it was for 'good cause' like unsafe working conditions or harassment.

•What counts as 'good cause'? My supervisor has been making inappropriate comments and creating a hostile work environment but I don't have everything documented.

Olivia Van-Cleve
•Hostile work environment can qualify as good cause, but you'll need to document everything and possibly file a complaint with HR first. Washington ESD will investigate these claims during adjudication.

•THIS!! Documentation is everything! I learned this the hard way when I quit my toxic job last year.

I was in a similar situation two years ago - horrible boss, considering quitting after just a few weeks. Ended up getting fired instead which actually worked out better for my unemployment claim. Sometimes it's worth trying to stick it out a bit longer if you can handle it.

•How long did you stick it out? I'm already losing sleep over this situation and it's affecting my health.

Sophia Russo
•About 3 months total, but honestly if it's affecting your health that badly, that could be considered good cause for quitting. Health issues caused by work stress are taken seriously.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing! I've been trying to figure out my base year calculation for weeks and every time I call I get a different person who tells me something different.

•You can actually log into your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account and view your wage history online. That'll show you exactly what quarters and wages are being counted for your base year.

•I tried that but my account keeps getting locked out. The website is terrible.

•That's another reason why I used Claimyr - the agent I spoke to was able to look at my account and explain everything clearly instead of me trying to navigate that awful website.

Been through the unemployment process three times in Washington and each time was a nightmare. The adjudication process alone took 2 months last time even though my case was straightforward.

•Two months?! I can't afford to wait that long for benefits if I do end up losing this job.

Mason Kaczka
•Unfortunately that's pretty normal these days. Make sure you have some savings if possible because the wait times are brutal.

can you file for unemployment if you get fired for attendance issues? asking for a friend lol

•It depends on the circumstances. If it was due to chronic tardiness or unexcused absences, that could be considered misconduct and result in disqualification. But if there were legitimate reasons like transportation issues or family emergencies, you might still qualify.

•what if it was mostly because of anxiety issues that made it hard to get to work on time?

•Mental health issues that affect your ability to work could potentially be considered good cause, but you'd need medical documentation and it would go through adjudication review.

Update - I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Took about 4 hours but way better than the weeks I spent trying to call myself. The agent was actually helpful and patient unlike my previous experiences.

•Was it expensive to use? I'm already tight on money which is why I'm worried about this job situation.

•It was worth it for me considering how much time and stress it saved. Much cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day.

Pro tip: if you do end up filing for unemployment, start your weekly claims immediately even if you're waiting for adjudication. You can't backdate claims very far so don't wait thinking you'll file once everything is approved.
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•Good to know! I had no idea about that rule.
0 coins
Jordan Walker
•Exactly right. You can only backdate one week in most cases, so file as soon as you become unemployed even if your claim is still being processed.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info. Sounds like I should focus on documenting the workplace issues and maybe try to tough it out a bit longer while looking for another job. At least now I know I'd probably qualify for benefits based on my work history from last year.

•That sounds like a good plan. Just remember that finding another job while you're still employed is always easier than job hunting while unemployed.

•Definitely document everything! Even if you don't end up needing it for unemployment, it could be useful for other legal purposes if the harassment continues.

One more thing - if you do file for unemployment, make sure you understand the job search requirements. Washington requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep detailed records.
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•What kind of records do they want to see?
0 coins
Mason Kaczka
•Company name, contact person, date of contact, method of contact, and position applied for. They can audit your job search log at any time so keep everything organized.

My cousin went through something similar last year with a toxic workplace. She ended up quitting after documenting everything and still got approved for unemployment. The key was having a paper trail of the harassment and showing she tried to resolve it through proper channels first.

Emily Sanjay
•How long did her adjudication take?

Hannah Flores
•About 6 weeks I think? She said it was stressful waiting but worth it in the end.

Just want to add that Washington ESD has really stepped up their fraud detection lately so make sure all your information is accurate when you file. Any discrepancies can cause major delays.

Emily Sanjay
•What kind of discrepancies cause problems?

Kayla Jacobson
•Mainly incorrect employer information, wrong dates of employment, or not reporting all your wages. Double check everything before submitting.

For anyone else struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. It's been a game changer for getting actual answers instead of just generic website information. The video demo on their site really shows how much easier they make the whole process.

•I was skeptical about using a third party service but honestly the Washington ESD phone system is so broken that it's almost necessary at this point.

Amara Torres
•Exactly! I wasted so much time trying to get through on my own. Should have used it from the beginning.

The whole system is ridiculous. I had to wait 3 months for my benefits because of some computer glitch that marked me as potentially ineligible. Three months! How are people supposed to survive that long without income?
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•That's terrifying. Did you eventually get backpay for those months?
0 coins
Grace Lee
•Yes but it was a nightmare to get sorted out. I ended up having to appeal even though it was clearly their mistake.

Another thing to consider - if you're thinking about quitting, look into whether your employer offers any kind of severance package. Sometimes it's worth having a conversation with HR about a mutual separation agreement.
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•I doubt my small company would offer severance, but maybe it's worth asking.

Mia Roberts
•Even small companies sometimes prefer to avoid potential lawsuits or unemployment claims. Doesn't hurt to ask professionally.

Just remember that unemployment benefits in Washington are temporary - maximum 26 weeks in most cases. So even if you qualify, you'll need a longer-term plan for finding new employment.
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•26 weeks should be enough time to find something better hopefully. This job market is tough though.

The Boss
•Yeah it's definitely challenging right now. But having the safety net of unemployment can give you more time to find the right job instead of just taking the first thing available.

I filed for unemployment last month and the whole process was actually smoother than I expected. The key is having all your employment information organized before you start the application.
0 coins
Emily Sanjay
•What information did you need to have ready?
0 coins
Evan Kalinowski
•Employer names and addresses, dates of employment, reason for separation, and your Social Security number. Having it all written down beforehand saved a lot of time.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Toxic work environments are no joke and sometimes your mental health is more important than a paycheck. Just make sure you have a plan before you make any big moves.
